Kragen returns and reports to Xymox that the door to the Niche is locked.
Listening to Trolkarl, Kragen looks at him "Fair enough Master Trolkarl, i will go an attempt to speak a truth or provide a true representation of this follower of Tyr."
Looks to Xymox "Your choice on retriving the gem? I'll attempt a more subtle approach first."
Kragen enters the room which had the Glenshade Revenant in it. Approaches the door on the North wall.
"I am Kragen Gravelbeard, Cleric of Tyr, of Clan Delhalls of the Vaasa Mountain Dwarves. My parents, whom died in a terrible mine cave in, were Anvil and Soniata Gravelbeard. I owe my life to the hermit Xikar Cutter whom took me in after i fled, a mine slave, from the chains of the Warlock Lord Thistlepig. He will come to know The Judge" holds up his hammer "soon enough when i deliver justice for my parents and my people!"
reaches down and grabs the handle of the door and attempts to open.
Kragen speaks to the door. A moment passes and he begins to see the screaming faces on the door change. One by one they become relaxed, some even with a small smile.
Starker:”Father Kragen, why on Faerun have you not spoken of this before? I do so look forward to killing this Thistlepig villain! It will be a bonding experience for you and me, like a trust fall but with more fireballs and the exquisite screams of our enemies as accompaniment. Let us do this as soon as we have retrieved my staff!”
The skull-rimmed door groans open to reveal anoctagonal chamber, its smooth black floor glowing faintly from the slow, pulsingropes of flamebeneath its translucent surface.
Alarge fireplaceoccupies the left wall. Themarble mantleis carved with a chaotic mix ofdemonic faces, skulls, and tangled bones. Atop each end of the mantle sits athick candle, each flamemotionless despite the roaring firein the hearth below. The flames burn an unusualdeep crimson.
Overhead, thedomed ceilingrises 20 feet high. Suspended from its apex hangs asingle iron chain, taut and unmoving, ending five feet above the floor in arazor-sharp brass plumb bob, gleaming and deadly.
Two heavy wooden doors with iron bands rest in the right-hand wall, framed by standard skull-etched arches.
Above the fireplace, an inscription in Draconic reads:
“Cool the flame, still the blade, silence the lies — and truth is weighed.”
Yartol joins Kragen at the door, "Well done, priest. You are quite clever to figure that out." More quietly, he adds, "I have heard of these Warlock Lords. Far to the east, correct? Vicious and vile people. I wish you luck in crushing the skulls of your enemies with your sworn hammer."
Kragen looks to Yartol. “Thank you Yartol. Yes, they are vile creatures, with only a thirst for greed. They care not for the lives of others, only their vile pursuits. Hopefully Tyr shines on me when I face him!” Smiles at the comforting thought.
(Chuckled at the thought of… I’m crushing your head!)
Then turning to Starker, chuckles. “Nothing would please me more than for you to join me when I bring the Warlock Lord to justice!”,
“Now, what would be your interpretation of the inscription above the mantel?”
Starker puts his fingers to his lips, holds his breath, and walks over to the candles. He holds his hand over the right candle ‘flame’ to judge its temperature. It hot, he will snatch his hand away quickly. If cool, will snuff out the ‘flame’ with his thumb and forefinger. If his breath lasts, he will do the same on the left. If he runs out of breath, leaves the room.
Kragen enters the room (token moved to location), looks at the wicked plum bob hanging in the center of the room. Attempts to estimate the length of the plumb bob and whether standing in front of the fireplace would put someone in it’s arc?
Starker enters the room (moved token on Owlbear) to stand before the fireplace. Kragen enters to examine the plumb bob closely. Yartol follows Kragen inside.
Trolkarl moves to the doorway. Tugging Xymox and Chadwick's arms Let's hurry up... if that damn staff is found, do you think he is liable to recall the warnings?
Observes Starker doing his thing and waits to see what comes of his candle experiment.
The rest of you move through the door, following the others into the room. The door closes behind you. Starker reaches up to the candle on the right. The flame is not hot. He is able to extinguish the flame between his fingers. The plumb bob where it hangs is too high to reach anyone in front of the fireplace Kragen determines. After the candle is snuffed out the chain on the plumb bob rapidly elongates so that the razor tip of the weight is just above the floor. Now it can reach the periphery of the room, Kragen believes. Starker is still holding his breath and has just snuffed out the right candle.
"Starker, your first action has activated this device" motions to the plumb bob "to elongate, which you are now in it's extended radius.", "Can you relight the flame to see if the device returns to it's original height?"
Kragen moves back to a safer distance from the plumb bob and tugs Yartol's sleeve to bring him back as well.

Next post will contain my action.
Xymox pick locks check = 14. Unsuccessful.

Xymox will try again if Kragen is unsuccessful.

The door opens.
Kragen peers through the door with his eagle goggles that see everything!
using his keen perception.

Kragen opens the door.
The skull-rimmed door groans open to reveal an octagonal chamber, its smooth black floor glowing faintly from the slow, pulsing ropes of flame beneath its translucent surface.
A large fireplace occupies the left wall. The marble mantle is carved with a chaotic mix of demonic faces, skulls, and tangled bones. Atop each end of the mantle sits a thick candle, each flame motionless despite the roaring fire in the hearth below. The flames burn an unusual deep crimson.

Anyone else moving?
Trolkarl moves to the doorway. Tugging Xymox and Chadwick's arms

Kragen begins to speak and the ropes of flame in the floor beneath begin to flare up. Flames concentrate at his feet.
Yartol backs away from Kragen, hands to swords hilts.
Could Chadwick reach the chain of the plumb bob with his longsword?
If within 5’, yes.
