Starker, setting down his notebook and protractor:”Going through my notes and recollections and having conferred with Cyrus, these seem to be our beat leads:There is the door that Kragen is now investigating that appears to be magically locked, there is the small oval depression in the wall in the first room of this level and there is the symbol of Atropus on the column in the room upstairs that was not investigated.
”Father Kragen, well spotted! Let me try to Knock it open.”

Starker's Knock suspends the Arcane Lock that holds the door closed with a loud KNOCK sound. Serethia's head jerks around at the loud noise to look around her and listen. The doors open.
The faint stench of rotted flesh greets your nostrils as the door opens. A room with several cages is before you. There are cages of varied sized. All have door with locks upon them. A large table is in the center of the room with iron manacle restraints. The surface of the table is stained, as is the floor surrounding the table. To the left is a cabinet holding tools and instruments useful to the study of anatomy. In the left-hand corner is a bookshelf with a variety of books and tomes.

”perhaps we could use the very traps of the slippery floors and bottomless pits to discommode the onslaught of the fell cavalry?”
”I need to top up at the completely harmless fountain that only refreshes.”
It has always refreshed us. I will still ask we consider caution. I would never consider that I could offer you any guidance about magic. I just think back to Chadwick speaking about Haste. It gives great power immediately but later demands a great price. The fountain may be similar. We don’t know why it provides life , nor what it may take in return.
I am all for using the traps against whatever may come. Brilliant as always
And unless you have reason to believe any of this junk has something to do with the phylactery, perhaps we should move on from this wretched place.
Chadwick looks back at Kragen when he asks to heal the prisoners and nods.
"I'll do another prayer of healing, that should help them both recover". He casts it while the others pick through the study.
Responding to Starker. "If we can control the choice of the fight somewhere to mitigate his movement would help tremendously, but we don't want to keep too tight with his area of effect spells. However in the end I don't think he'll give us a choice."
/OOC I think everyone except Chadwick already got the benefit. The heal is for 8 for Chadwick and the prisoners. I tried to use HD dice for Chadwick, but it didn't work. I think maybe ithe 8 got applied twice?
Chadwick opens the door, then recoils back slightly. Grimacing he turns back to the group.
"It's <pauses> the stuff of nightmares in there, no reason for everyone to have to see it. Starker might want to investigate with me to check out the bookshelf though."
Serethia looks to Kragen, ”You understand our time is limited, right? Why are we looting torture instruments and manuals?! If the guardians show up it will not be two of them, IT WILL BE 50!!!!!”
Kragen repulses in disgust upon seeing this room and its use, he does not enter. However, Serethia’s comments break him from his silence.
”Starker, enough of your ceaseless curiosity, now is not the time. If it doesn’t advance our cause here than leave it.”
to the group “There was a vaguely hidden door I spotted in the first room when we descended. We did not investigate before we encountered the Wizard. If he made the effort to disguise it or hide it, likely it is of interest. Let’s go investigate before we go to the column, Master Trolkarl.”
turns and immediately heads to the room with the magic circle
Kragen attempts to push the wall and see if it moves inward.
”Mage Starker, will the rubix cube in your possession fit in the depression? Did we find anything in the Wizards workshop that may fit in this depression?”
Starker reads the scroll, casting Passwall upon the wall where the door is. The spell is cast and the scroll consumed. There is no effect on that wall. It temains in place.

Starker are we certain about the fountain?
It has always refreshed us. I will still ask we consider caution. I would never consider that I could offer you any guidance about magic. I just think back to Chadwick speaking about Haste. It gives great power immediately but later demands a great price. The fountain may be similar. We don’t know why it provides life , nor what it may take in return.

Starker rummages through the tools. He chortles several times while tucking tools into his kit. The books are all written in languages unknown to him.
Starker grabs a few oof the books that either have the best illustrations/diagrams and the ones that seem most ancient and the ones that seem newest.
Starker is now overloaded with books.
Serethia looks to Kragen, ”You understand our time is limited, right? Why are we looting torture instruments and manuals?! If the guardians show up it will not be two of them, IT WILL BE 50!!!!!”
Starker:”Friend Trokarl, if you don’t mind can I add to you burden of my spare spell book by entrusting you with a few of these tomes?”
If it gets us moving-pick your two favorites. nothing bound in human skin.
Now let’s move out. We need the phylactery not a library
Lets look at the column again. Maybe it has something to do with the secret door in the summoning room.
Packs a few books that Starker points out and whispers to Cyrus
Best hope I stay safe or you are likely to be replaced by a donkey
Cyrus: 😳
Trolkarl now has two books from the lab.
Starker has 3 books, 3 scrolls and a collection of cords and wires from the library.
Xymox has 5 scrolls from the library.
Starker is now encumbered. Movement 20' per round. (You can Hokey or Pokey, not both)
(( All items added to your character sheets ))
/plans?
"Do we know where the squid heads will be coming in? If it's a teleportation ring could we disable it?"

checks for traps on the hidden door.

Kragen finds no traps.
There appears to be some kind of passage here. The only thing Kragen finds is a small, oval depression in the center of the wall.
Kragen attempts to push the wall and see if it moves inward.
”Mage Starker, will the rubix cube in your possession fit in the depression? Did we find anything in the Wizards workshop that may fit in this depression?”
The door does not budge to Kragen’s attempt.
Manipulating the puzzle box has no effect.
“Any thoughts? Knock, passwall?”
“We could try the Passwall scroll,” Starker replies.
The passwall is fine by me if it keeps us moving.
Perhaps we could ask the fish for nebulous insights on the location of the phylactery also.
Starker reads the scroll, casting Passwall upon the wall where the door is. The spell is cast and the scroll consumed. There is no effect on that wall. It temains in place.
