Xymox peers toward the stairwell, fingers already brushing his hand crossbows.
“Seal the door if you can, Serethia. Fire buys time, stone buys certainty.” He glances at Starker. “Do you think that we have time to interrogate the fish while the house is on fire? Anyway, I’ve questioned enough eldritch seafood for one lifetime.”
He gestures toward the chests. “I’ll keep the rear noisy and distracted. Someone clever find the soul jar before the calamari arrive in bulk.”
"Check if there is some sort of depression that the ring would fit in this side. If there's not and we can't make an illusionary wall we either make a stand here, or fall back to the study and have Serethia magically seal the door."
If the quickly taken vote is to make a stand in the secret chamber.
The rest of you fall back further into the room behind me so they can't see you from the stairs. We want as many to fill the outer chamber as possible before we unleash our area of effect spells. Plus you don't want to be eating whatever ranged weapons they might have before you have to.
Kragen you and I have the best armor, we need to fill the breech. I know it's typically best not to put the healer in the front, but it'll be a more efficient use of our limited heal spells. The others can assist with spells and ranged attacks from the rear."
Yartol moves up to stand beside Chadwick. "We are the best swords. His skills are most needed in the second rank," he says looking to Kragen. "We will fill the gap." Turning to Serethia he says, "The only door is at the top of the stairs. How close do you need to be?"
Serethia answers Yartol, "They must be closed and I have to touch them."
Yartol looks back to Chadwick, "Shall we head to the top of the stairs, then?"
When the wall melts away, the transition feels like entering a fevered scholar’s dream. The floor of translucent obsidianseems alive, pulsing faintly with ropes of flame that move like serpents in the deep glass beneath your feet. The rug dominates the space — a masterwork tapestry of chaos and damnation. The woven images of fiends, warping realms, and sigils of the Eight Arrows of Chaos all seem to subtly change when viewed out of the corner of one’s eye.
Starker, in a mad rush:”Xymox, Trokarl, attend a second! <brings out Oracle Orb of Aquilith, holds it so that those not watching the door or standing guard can see the fish’s response>:”Fish: what is a viable path that takes us to Illiandil’s phlyactery from here?”
“Chadwick, Yartol, are you going to attempt to get Serethia to the top of the stairwell? If so, you better go now. Otherwise have Starker prepare to cast Firewall at the base of that stairwell or outside of the corridor of this room.”
The fish looks at Starker. Its mouth moves as if it is trying to speak. It then disappears, reappearing behind the plant fronds. It swims out to look at you and then goes about its business.
Starker, placing Oracle in backpack, puts Cyrus on his shoulder and grabs EmFer’s Chastisement, turns around and says:”Let’s evoke some anguish from all those foolish enough to defy The Company!!!!! Mwah ha haha mwah ha ha!”

Xymox looks over to Trolkarl. "Remind me to purchase some garlic butter and a bit of lemon the next time we are in a town. That fish has but one redeeming purpose." He glares at the useless fish and walks away.
Are we to hold up here for defense or should we look to see what is in these chests?
If Serethia is truthful- and we have no reason to doubt her- about 50 of those things coming we need to act. No disrespect to Yartol and Chadwick but against those odds it will not be long before our line breaks.
I think we need to have some folks investigate in parallel with the defense. The fish didn’t mime fighting, he spoke and disappeared
Or if anyone can scrye to see their true numbers perhaps we can determine how realistic a defense is to the threat
Starker:”It mimed teleportation through a wall after speaking some words when asked for viable path that takes us to Illiandil’s phlyactery from here. There is a viable path!”

“Unless someone can produce a teleport spell, then we do not have many options present. Some of us need to work on the defense of this position while others find us another option.”
you can see Kragen is visibly frustrated that The Company, after countless encounters, isn’t more organized in the face of dire situations.
”Our options do not seem to be plentiful. I am not excited about defending a box which we have no exit. However, it’s probably better then ignoring the looming threat to put all resources es into investigating this room.”
”unless someone provides a better suggestions?” Kragen lingers long enough to hear others options
Let’s not lose your backup spellbook. Standback- this necromancer loves his traps. Even in this hidden spot it wouldn’t surprise me if something is happening with these chests
Trolkarl scans the chest on the northern wall and the statues to each side. Unless he sees something or someone stops him he will open it.
Starker begins examining the collections of books in the NW corner of the room.
Kragen stands in the hall leading into the room with Brother Kellen, sword drawn. He is ragged and beaten down and has the appearance of a broken man doing his best to hold it together for those around him.
Xymox accompanies Trolkarl in examining the chest to the North. Both examine the large chest that is 5 feet long, bound in iron bands, and closed with heavy locks etched with Infernal script (Trolkarl = 14, Xymox = 21 (Nat 20)). Xymox discovers that there is another Glyph of Warding on the chest. Hanging above the chest are two large paintings. The canvases shift subtly as though the figures are breathing. The left one shows Illiandil shaking hands with a horned, shadowed figure over a burning lectern. The eyes of the figure follow anyone moving through the room. The right one shows a a ritual under a sky filled with spiraling constellations, the same unfamiliar ones painted on the chamber ceiling.

You can see Kragen readying himself for combat.
Looks to the others. "Would it be better to place the wall of fire at the Stairwell entrance or just outside the doorway to this room?"
Starker:” We should ask the fish about the phylactery!”
Serethia adds, "If there is a door between us and them I can seal it magically."

/OOC I didn't realize there were doors at the top of the stairs, that changes things.
"Yartol has the right of it, let's get those doors sealed. While we are seeing to that check if there is a way to reform the door from the inside."
Chadwick dashes off to the top of the stairs.
