The Company turns back from their quest to find Alamnal in the Underdark. It seems much quicker on the trip to the surface. All is quiet in the basement as you round the final corner into the natural cave.
Hoid to the intellectuals in the vicinity, “To what extent would we benefit from scrutinizing the lodge and its contents? Our prior trip through was hasty.”
(I assume that to be true because my previous intention was to make sure there were no baddies that could surprise us from behind as we journeyed to the cellar. But if we did search and the game mechanics were expedited, ignore the query above.)
(( The previous search was more of a "room clearing" search to ensure no enemies were left behind you on your descent to the basement. It was sufficient to see that there is little to 'search' at this point. Cabinets and furniture were left open showing signs of recent occupation. Nothing of great value was to be seen. ))
Moving through the hunting lodge now that then enemy is cleared shows little of great interest. Common items of day to day use are found. The larder is poorly stocked at this point, and with items unusual for surface dwellers. What appears to be Underdark foodstuffs are present. Upstairs is where Alamnal stayed. A few scraps of papers with communications from Hinnick to Alamnal are found concerning routine management instructions and how to manipulate the Ravenshields. One of the upstairs chambers was apparently occupied by the Dragonborn warrior you faced on the road given some of the personal items found there. The last was occupied by a wizard, possibly Falonir. A calligraphy set remains as well as small book with treatises on Necromancy that is more scholarly than arcane. Starker becomes animated in searching this room and tears it apart with the help of Cyrus. Nothing else of interest is found. Starker keeps the book. "It is his spell book that I want," Starker seethes. "If anyone sees such a tome please let me or Cyrus know about it." He then stomps downstairs and outside, presumably to start a forest fire or something equally calming.
The horses and mules are all close by the lodge. Freya has served in your absence to keep them collected about the clearing. She reports no strangers have approached and no one has left the building.
Garrent has interest in the papers from Almanal's chamber. "These will be useful in my reporting of what has transpired here," he says. "Do you mind if I keep them?"
Seeing Starker's frustration, Trolkarl smiles and tries to make light of the moment The spellbook may be the rectangular item that I saw Alamnal carrying off. He promised his revenge on me, hopefully he remembers to bring the book along with him when he tries.
If we are to make haste back to support the dwarves, should we journey with Garrent in return to the duke, stopping at the manor to check on conditions along the way?
Garrent agrees with Trolkarl, "Return to Ravenshield Manor to rejoin my fellow Dragons would be prudent. The roads have not been very safe lately," he adds with a chuckle.
While searching if Chadwick see any food stuffs that would make a nice snack for Freya and the other mounts he'll gather it up and take it out to them. He'll spend sometime giving Freya a good brushing.
I believe Kragen needs to communicate via Tyr-o-graph to discern the situation with the Stonejaw bros. There was also some discussion about investigating something near the lodge regarding an ancestral demise, which would require input from Trolkarl or Gaius.
Other than that, I propose we return with Garrent.
Starker:’There are some standing stones nearby in which Nimnal was interested, I think? If so, perhaps we could pass them to see if Alamnal happens to be there as we head out?”
(( Those standing stones are two days away into the mountains, west of here. Ravenshield Manor is east. ))
Garrent listens to Starker and responds, “My path lies towards Ravenshield Manor. I must report what I have witnessed to the Duke. If you decide to head west, I must part company with you.”
Gaius adds, “I must return with Garrent. My duty is to my family. Alamnal is driven off. I would prefer him dead. But, I cannot gamble losing the revelations gained to pursue him further.”
"To the Ravenshield manor it is, we can examine the stones on our way back up towards the spine of the world.
Hopefully we won't have to ride the whole way. I fear the situation will have resolved itself given the length of the journey, and probably not in good way for our friends. I wonder if we can find a mage to pay to teleport us to cut down on travel time???"
The trip back to Ravenshield Manor is a quiet one. While Alamnal has been driven from the land, it was hoped that his demise would be secured. The Company is in danger of being demoted to Hobo status, losing their specialization. Starker seems to have developed a new tic around his right eye. No one is speaking of it out loud yet, but Cyrus seems to be having some kind of stomach problem. Everyone works hard at remaining upwind from the little guy. He seems to be normal, but has developed a habit of rubbing his head frequently.
The Purple Dragons have established order at Ravenshield Manor. Handers condition has improved greatly over the past few days. He is sitting up in bed and able to carry on conversation now. The Inquisitor has been tending to him and supporting his health. Gammal has remained secluded in his apartment. A Dragon remains on guard at his door at all times. The House Guard has been removed from the manor house as a result of the Dragons making barracks there.
There is a sense of unease in the air. The people seem to be nervous about the changes taking place and the continued presence of the Dragons. Most people avoid meeting your gaze and give way as you approach on the road. The grooms take your mounts on your arrival and you are welcomed at the manor by the house staff. The Inquisitor and the Dragons’ commander are in the main hall as you arrive. The staff informs you that they have requested to meet with you upon your return.
Both men rise as you enter the main hall and refreshments are brought to fortify you after the trip. Ale, wine, cheeses, bread and dried fruits are brought for all of you and set about. “Welcome back,” the Inquisitor begins. “I am hoping that you have glad news for us here. Please, tell me of what you found.”
Given the urgency of Kragen’s correspondence, would it be feasible for the elves to intervene on our behalf due to the favor we are owed? Travel by flying ship may have spoiled me over long days in the saddle, but if there is a time-sensitive danger it may be the prudent option.

(We still need the details from Kragen to determine urgency, but I would not be opposed to getting a ride from the elves. Kragen having gone radio silent due to European travels has reduced his comminicativeness.)
Chadwick plods back to the manor disappointed he get didn't get to try out the fly spell.

Chadwick via telepathic link "Freya are you and your friends ok? We should be coming to you soon. Let me know if you see any people out there."
Freya responds, “I am rested but hungry. Other horses and not horses eating grass.”

Hoid to Garrent, “Please take the papers. I am sure that Garrent and Trolkarl have seen all they need.”
Gaius nods in agreement with Hoid, “The Duke will benefit in seeing these papers to complete his information gathering.”
Garrent gathers them and finds an empty scroll case from one of the rooms.
