Magnar gets a far away look in his eyes. Water collects but no tears fall as he takes a seat. “ Our brother waits for us now to join him with the gear so we may begin,” his voice drifts off. He just sits for a minute lost in thought before asking, “How much did Cleggor promise to pay you?”
”Had Cleggor not been in a hurry, he could have traveled with us, and surely he would have arrived safely. Payment is likely the last thing that should be on your mind, but I understand some place great emphasis on meeting obligations. The agreed upon fee was 50 gold.”
Magnar nods in appreciation of Hoid’s statements. “It is true. He can be impatient. Especially when something big is involved….,” then pauses to think. He looks back to the group he came from. You see the gnome putting his pipe away and nodding to Magnar.
”I can get you payment for your service tomorrow morning. Can I meet you here? Also, I offer you another 50 gold coins to find my brother and return him here, or, discover his fate and let me know. I must return to our brother with this equipment. I will plan to return here in six days to hear your news if you accept,” he looks to Hoid, Chadwick and the others.
”I accept, even if my compatriots do not. I have a score to settle with Craddock the Coward. Twice he has assaulted us with his minions and then run away like his cowardly title when we bested his minions. I intend to let him taste my blade.”
Assuming we have a day to prepare, Hoid will scour the town for a longbow and greatsword, and see if the smith will pay anything for the crap weapons we salvaged.
Kragen nods agreement with Hoid. “I will also take up this cause!”, “Tyr’s justice shall be served with extreme prejudice, this scourge needs to be dealt with.”
You enjoy your meals of stew, sourdough bread and a sharp goat's milk cheese. The room gets busy during the night and the crowd is pleasant. Everyone seems to get along well with many greetings and farewells given.
After finishing your meal a human man in a chain shirt with a sword at his side walks into the common room and over to the counter. You see him discussing something with the serving girl. She looks over to your table and nods, he then turns to look as well. He seems to thank her and then heads for your table.
"Greetings, Travelers. I am Sannak, the Captain of the Guard. My men at the western gate today said you have some red cloaks on you. How did you come by having them?," he gets straight to the point. He stands by the table about 5 feet away with his thumbs hooked through his sword belt and a wide stance.
”Captain, my name is Hoid. I am pleased to meet you. We came upon the cloaks while delivering a wagon of goods. We were ambushed late one night at our camp by Craddock the Coward, some goblins, and the miscreants with the cloaks. After Craddock the Coward ran away, as befits his title, we found the cloaks on the human corpses. We brought the cloaks because we had heard tales of brigands in red cloaks and thought the local officials might find the cloaks of interest, particularly in view of the status of the prior wearers of the cloaks.”
Sannak listens to Hoid with a stern expression on his face. Once Hoid finishes he maintains his evaluating gaze upon Hoid and then to each of you. "We have had problems with the Red Cloak Bandits as they call themselves. This is new news about them working with goblins. They usually waylay caravans and shake them down for protection payment to travel through the area. You were attacked, you say? With deaths involved?"
”Yes, there were deaths. Seven goblins and two of the red cloaks, if I recall. It was a chaotic affair. There were others, as best I can tell, but it was dark and those that lived were mostly outside of my sight. A day’s travel prior to our ambush, we came upon another apparent attack. There were dead horses and evidence that Cleggor Stonejaw was attacked, but no clear evidence of death that I recall outside of the horses. We found a pin that Cleggor was known to wear and returned it to his brother a short time ago. We intended to go back and look for Cleggor.”
"Cleggor, you say?," he relaxes in his stance a bit. "He is a good one. I hope nothing irreversible has happened to him. You will let me know what you find?"
Not really waiting for an answer to his question, he presses on, "The Red Cloaks are not usually lethally violent. But, they are getting bolder. I do not know who this Craddock the Coward is, or why he would go by that name for that matter. Is he responsible for the change in the Red Cloaks' behavior?" He scans the room and seems to recognize Magnar. "I'm going to follow up with Magnar on this. If you find out anything else I'd like to know. Particularly about the Red Cloaks and goblins working together." He then walks over to sit with Magnar, the gnome and the two other humans.
The serving girl tells Hoid that Jotrun's is only a tavern, not an inn. But, The Hallowed Tree is across the street and is a fine inn with plenty of rooms typically.
You are able to secure rooms for the night. As you are making arrangements, the man running the inn looks at Erbert, "You a wizard, too? No. Trouble," he emphasizes. "I have had enough problems with wizards lately to last a lifetime," he says and walks upstairs to show you your rooms in a huff.
Your rooms are basic, but comfortable. Each has a bed, a small table and chair, chamber pot and an open armoire with hooks and pegs for hanging gear and a lower compartment for boots. If you had a trunk or other case, there is ample room to place one as well. The bed has linens and a comfortable looking comforter. A welcome change from the hard ground in a tent you have been experiencing.

”6 days time, good sir.”
Hoid will:
- finish eating
- request a room
- rest and recover
- next day, see prior post
- if at any time the captain of the guard arrives, speak with him
Magnar nods in agreement, "Six days."

Hoid, as the captain walks away, “Titles are earned, not taken. Craddock the Coward earned his title through his actions.”
Sannak stops, turns, "Agreed, Hoid. Titles, like rewards, are earned. Not taken."

On the morrow, Kragen plans to reprovision himself. He will also visit the temple to Tyr for some time of prayer, reflection, study and tythe.
Chadwick pounds his mug on the table "Well said my friend!"
Chadwick will tag along if Kragen doing the same, if he doesn't mind.
“would be honored if you would join me, Chadwick”
