There are a multitude of entities milling about under the floor. They churn up and then fall away to be replaced by others as they sink below the mass of bodies. Innumerable targets are available.
The creature hit reacts as though hurt and then is replaced as the churn rolls it under others. No apparent lasting effect.
In between Starker fire bolting things and examining the Phylactery. Kragen would like to examine the Crown in detail, anything remarkable about it other than its value?
I would be fine doing it- even knowing it’s trapped- if it helps us move forward the destruction of the phylactery. But believe it has a really good chance at disrupting the few moments remaining for the Fly spell- if not much more.
Unless we have some elegant way to bypass the trap or if we wanted to run the gauntlet on the guardians to try to make our way back to the skeleton animation room and bring one of those guys back.
There are two unopened chests, the bookcase in the SW corner of the room, the sword and the paintings on the wall that have not really been investigated. I do believe the animated skeleton is still with you. It is currently unarmed or armored.
Yartol replies to Trolkarl, "I think it will be short 'running' of that gauntlet, Trolkarl. I believe I saw at least four of those octopus headed creatures surrounding another who appeared different. That one was like their version of a mage I am guessing. Not in the heavy armor and giant pole arm of the others. Had a staff of some kind."
Kragen looks at the group “I ask this group to consider, if the witch (illandil) wanted to protect the phylactery yet gain access when needed, wouldn’t it be logical that the “2 keys” be on his person, or the person he is commandeering? Does it make sense for the keys to be locked and warded in the only chests we have not opened? If he truly would have used the chests to protect the keys then we likely should have found one or both with opening the other 2. I am questioning the logic that they would be there?”
”the sword could be one, however if this artifact is powerful, why would it not have been on his person?”
”Starker, when you had all 3 items on your person and approached the phylactery, did you experience anything different?”
”I had the staff and experienced nothing different?”, “Let me approach the phylactery with all 3 items, I’ll attempt to grab the artifact and see how,it responds.”
Trolkarl takes a quick look at the paintings. There are six of them:
“The Defier’s Pact” — Illiandil shaking hands with a horned, shadowed figure over a burning lectern. The eyes of the figure follow anyone moving through the room.
“The Binding of the Star” — a ritual under a sky filled with spiraling constellations, the same unfamiliar ones painted on the chamber ceiling.
“The Severing” — Illiandil cutting his own reflection from a mirror with a silver dagger; the reflection bleeds.
“The Triumph” — the wizard, cloaked in shadow, standing atop a mountain of corpses, his eyes twin suns of void.
“The Fall” — Illiandil’s body disintegrating in a ring of flame while the ring on his finger glows fiercely.
“The Watcher Beyond” — a celestial form emerging from a rift in space, its head crowned with eight radiating arrows — the same motif as on the rug.
Starker:”When I was investigating I was not attacked the way good Father Kragen was attacked. I can attempt to go and pick up the rod we think might be the phylactery.”
”Starker, when you had all 3 items on your person and approached the phylactery, did you experience anything different?”
(( It was Chadwick who entered the room twice, the second time with all three artifacts on his person. The ring, staff and crown were carried by him. He noticed no difference in the feel of the room or the effect of the floor liquifying under him. Starker only entered once while flying with all three items in his possession. The floor liquefied under him as well. ))
”I had the wand and experienced nothing different?”, “Let me approach the phylactery with all 3 items, I’ll attempt to grab the artifact and see how,it responds.”
(( Do you mean the Staff of the Void? No wand has been found. ))
Starker:”When I was investigating I was not attacked the way good Father Kragen was attacked. I can attempt to go and pick up the rod we think might be the phylactery.”
<flies over and tries to take the rod>
Starker flies over to the pedestal carrying all three items (staff, crown and ring). He reaches out for the phylactery. The ruby flares and a bright red beam shoots forth at Starker. Starker makes a DC17 DEX save = 8. He is hit by the beam for 20 fire damage and 9 necrotic damage. He is unable to grasp the phylactery.
Starker:”Empirically speaking it seems as though neither the items nor a lack of adherence to Father Kragen and Sir Chadwick’s esthetic preferences are key. There are two keys, I believe. Let’s open the chests and possibly find them.”
Starker:”Also, we should consider preparing to retreat using the Gate scroll, though we may need a very expensive diamond. Xagyg asked for the Staff, not the phylactery.
Starker:”I wonder if we can figure out a way to overcome the suppression of conjuration, especially given the demise of Illiandil, ot at least hime temporary discomfiture.”

It is clearly enchanted. The runes encircling it flare with a white light when spells are cast by Trolkarl and Starker.
Chadwick, any objections to opening the chest?

(( isn’t the animated skeleton still with you? Under Xymox’s control? ))
Good.
I thought he was lost in one of the fights.
I vote to send him to open it with the rest of a good distance away.

Feel free to have the skeleton open a chest, if that is what is decided.
Starker's Protection from Evil and Good and Kragen's Bless spells are now expired.
Trolkarl's Fly has a limited time remaining.
/plans?

Yeah. We don’t need to test their capabilities. Seeing Kragen drop in our first encounter with them is all I need to know
Takes a quick look at the the painting
I say have the skeleton open the chest

Serethia interjects, “Gate is a Conjuration…”
