During your night at Jotrun's, Bronk seems to be acting strange. Already taking into account he is a goblin, still unusual for him. After looking to Galban and him nodding, Bronk begins in broken Common, "Bronk will stay here. Train with...," he struggles over what to say next. Galvan quietly adds, "Sheriff." Bronk nods, "Sheriff. Train scouts. Teach what Bronk know."
Prior to leaving Shalecliff, Kragen claps Bronk on the shoulder. "You have proven your worth friend Bronk! May Tyr shine upon your path and your aim stay true."
The journey to the Barder Ranch is a fairly easy one. The wagon tracks continue usually in sight of the river; sometimes near, sometimes further away. Early in the afternoon you stop for a rest and something to eat. The river is close here. There were several smaller farms nearby as well. The river has an area of rapids just ahead. It widens into a pool below the rapids. There are fishermen throwing hand lines with a weight on the end and hooks floating up off the main line. Several trout are caught while you rest. The fishermen seem to be in good spirits as they work. Greetings and waves are offered as you walk by them on the road.
Towards the end of the day you find a mountain valley with a large stream running out of it to feed the Bright River. There is a compound of buildings at the mouth of the valley, halfway up the slope.
Looking further north, you can see what appears to be rising smoke on the horizon. The sun is behind the mountains to the west. The shadow of the Spine of the World has cooled the air.
Watching the compound of buildings as you decide you can see people moving about the buildings. They are leading horses and cows to what must be barns and corrals for the night.
To the north, it is definitely a plume of smoke rising on the horizon.
Perhaps I misunderstood. Smoke is not from the compound?
Correct. You have arrived at the mouth of the valley described by Galban. There is a farm/ranch that looks more like a fort/compound than a farm seen a little over a mile into the valley. This is to the west. You can see people managing the animals for the night at the ranch.
Looking to the north along the river you can see a plume of smoke on the horizon. You are guessing a large fire given the distance and smoke plume seen. The hills and valley wall may obscure the farm/compound to the west from the smoke to the north.
Kragen to the group. "Recommend we divert to the west and visit the Barder Ranch were the last report of bandit incursion occurred.", Looking towards the smoke to the north. "They may have some additional information about what is creating the smoke to the north of their Ranch.", "I can provide assistance if they need it and the information may prevent us from walking into something we are not prepared for?" Looks to the group for confirmation.
I agree that we should stop at Barder Ranch first to inquire about the smoke. They might know the source or reason and prevent an unnecessary or ill-prepared trip. If they have no information, we can proceed with haste.

The way up the valley is an easy walk for you. The peal of a bell sounds from somewhere inside the ranch. Three men walk out of the main gates towards your group. All are human, wearing leather armor and carrying spears. You can see activity in what appear to be defensive positions inside the ranch as well. The men stop at about 1/2 bow shot from the walls and wait for you to approach.
Kragen, with "The Judge" slung on his back, approaches with arms out and hands palms up in a non threatening gesture.
Loudly so all can hear "This message is for Ullur Barder, at the behest of Sheriff Galban of Shalecliff, my colleagues and I are here to investigate the attacks on the ranches and folk here in the Northwest.", "We are sent to quell the attacks and bring those to Tyr's Justice." pausing for effect "We seek any information you can provide that would assist us in stopping these attacks and dispensing justice deserved!" "Would you meet with us?"
The man in the middle steps forward a few steps, "Greetings, traveler. I am Olar, Ullurson. Good to hear from our friend Galban. I hope his limp from that nasty orc spear is doing better." He pauses a bit then continues, "The raids are more frequent than usual. But, as you can see," he gestures behind him, "we are prepared."
"Well met, Olar. As we are seeking to bring these raids to and end, can you provide any relevant information to their location, raiding party size, humaniod types, purpose to their raids, what they have been taking, know bandit leaders?" motioning to the large plume of smoke to the north "Do you know of what is causing that plume? Seems too large to be a campfire??" "Any pertinent information you may have in assisting us in bringing these vile creatures to justice would be welcome, Thank you."

Any desire to interview any of the Angler's as we continue on??
Continue to the "compound of buildings", assuming they are the Barder Ranch.
Approach with caution, suggest sending a smaller emissary to avoid looking like bandits. I will volunteer to approach the ranch. Any others?

Chimney or campfire type plume or raging inferno type plume?
It is a ways off. So, it must be big to be able to see. Single plume of smoke.
Let’s pick up the pace a bit but stop if anyone reacts like we are threatening.
Agreed, let’s go.
/Pick up the pace to where?
Perhaps I misunderstood. Smoke is not from the compound?

I vote that we make haste and head towards the source of the smoke.
