Olar seems unimpressed so far in this conversation. He looks over your group with a casual scan of the eyes and then in the direction Kragen is referring to about the smoke plume. It is not visible from where you have met Olar and his group. "I don't see any smoke plume, dwarf of no name," he says staring flatly back at Kragen.
"Forgive me Olar Ullurson. My name is Kragen Gravelbeard of Clan Delhalls of the Galena Mountain Dwarves. In my haste, i forgot my manners." Bows his head in acknowledgement, hands spread wide with palms up.
While Kragen is making introductions Chadwick smiles and nods along while using he divine sense. <Assuming nothing pings on the Paly sense Chadwick will continue>
Greetings Olar, I'm Chadwick LeRoy Jenkins, Paladin of Tyr. I hail from a humble little village called Monstordrink in the Silver marshes. Grew up farming kinda like this, but our whole village probably wasn't even as big as your fine operation here.
As my friend Kragen mentioned, Galban had told us about the raids going on around these parts and we had hoped to help bring justice for those who have been tormented by these villains. We had some previous success against the bandits called the Red Cloak band. We were even able to turn their leaders over to Galban to stretch their necks for their crimes. Tell you what, he certainly doesn't show any signs of being wounded, as spry as a man half his age.
When we saw the smoke while further down the pass we feared it might be the bandits putting another farm to the torch. Course it could just be a farmer doing some clearing, but figured it would only be proper to check it out and make sure.
You notice Chadwick using his regional country accent versus the more cultured way of speaking he was taught during his training.
Olar seems to relax a bit with Chadwick’s tale. The other two with him also relax a bit. He looks to Chadwick, “Never heard of Monstordrink, is that near here?” He asks. “Tell me more about the smoke. This is not the time of year to be burning.”
"Allow me to continue after my rude beginning..." Pauses to allow Olar to respond.
If Olar does not respond, Kragen continues "I am sure you are not accustomed to large groups approaching unannounced at your doorstep. i can understand your caution as Sheriff Galban has informed us of your recent misfortune of being victimized by these bandits." "The good Sheriff has requested we stop at your ranch, check on your needs, and provide assistance if required." "My comrades and I can assist with any wounded you may have if you desire, we are able to provide unique healing talents." "If you require no assistance, we would appreciate any information you could provide that may lead to removing these brigands from the region."
Olar nods to Kragen, “Your offer is generous. We have no injured from the raids, just the usual scrapes and sprains from doing hard work.” He seems very interested in your talk of smoke, “Where did you see this smoke? Over the horizon? Or, nearer and close to the river?”
Nodding and pointing north of the ranch "On our approach to your ranch, we observed a large amount of smoke directly north of here.",
"Too large to be a simple campfire?"
"Based on the direction the river is coming down from the Northwest part of the mountain range, it's likely to be close to the river in my estimation."
"Is there any other farmsteads or ranches along the river just north of here that could be in danger?"
Olar considers what you tell him for a moment. The two with him look to him for instruction. He turns to his left, “Go. Get us horses.” The man to his left gives his spear to the other man to Olar’s right and departs at a run to the ranch.
Olar turns to you, “We will ride to investigate. You may go to the ranch if you like.”
The runner quickly covers the ground to the ranch. You hear commands given. A short time later several riders emerge and horses are brought to Olar. The runner reclaims his spear and riders dismount to allow Olar and his escorts to mount the horses. “We will investigate and bring word,” Olar states. The three the depart on their horses at a run.
The two riders who dismounted then offer to bring you to the ranch.
As they are getting ready to leave Chadwick adds; I'd be happy to accompany you in the investigation of you'd like. I'm not particularly stealthy, but good in a scrap and Tyr's healing can be useful.
Erbert follows along to the ranch, quiet through this entire encounter, waiting for the proper time to help. For the time being, he merely makes notes, drawings, notes of names and places. Something doesn’t seem right to him about this whole situation…

Gneuman agrees. He mentions to Erbert that something seems amiss and follows him to the ranch. "Keep your eyes open. Let's look around when we get to the ranch."
The two horsemen are not very talkative as the lead you to the ranch. The range is a large compound surrounded by a fieldstone wall 6-8’ high. It looks like there have been several stages of development, each making the compound area larger. There is a gatehouse you are headed towards with two large wooden doors about 12’ tall. They are open to allow you entrance. A short tunnel through the gatehouse leads to a large courtyard. Across the yard is a large wood and stone keep. It is three stories high with a battlemented platform on the top. There is a large, two story barn to the right. A silo sits beside it. To the left is a long two story building with shuttered windows. Paths lead around each side of the manor house. There are enclosed pens beyond the manor house each with another barn like building.
The riders walk up to the manor house doors and open them. A large hall is inside. Many tables are set up there. You arrived at the evening meal time. A head table sits at the opposite end of the hall. Many women and children are sitting at the tables eating and talking. Heads turn at your arrival and the crowd becomes quiet. The riders walk up to the head table and stop. There is a gray haired man sitting in the center of the table. He has on nicer looking clothes than the rest who wear typical commoner attire. A silver chain around his neck has a large silver oak leaf pendant hanging from it.
”My lord, Ullur. These are the travelers who have come. They claim to be from Shalecliff,” one rider says bowing. They both then move to the side and stand there uncomfortably.
The gray haired man looks up from his meal and looks you all over, “Shalecliff? What news do you bring?”
"Well met Lord Ullur Barder, my name is Kragen Gravelbeard, Cleric of Tyr, from Clan Delhalls of the Galena Mountain Dwarves." nods to Ullur in respect. "Thank you for providing, my comrades and i an audience." "Sheriff Galban Snow of Shalecliff, wishes you good tidings and asked we check on you and your family given the current raids in the northwest."
"My comrades and I are investigating, under the request of the good Sheriff, the raids on the local farmsteads and ranches in the Northwest." "We believe that they have a connection to some recent encounters in the Shalecliff area while we were under the employ of the Dwarven Stonejaw brothers.", "The Sheriff is unable to send support this far outside of Shalecliff so we offered to silence these brigands and bring peace to these lands." "Is there any assistance we can provide to you and yours?" motions to the party "My comrades and I are able to care for any wounded?" Pauses for a response.
Continues if no response. "News i can provide may be limited however our understanding is that others, like you in this region, have been plagued by these brigands called the Red Cloaks. I mentioned that we had an encounter ourselves, with these Red Cloaks. My comrades and i tracked recent carvan raids back to a cavern, there we encountered and removed a company of goblins and a bugbear named Klarg. During that encounter, we were surprised by a group of red cloaks being led by a Half-Orc named Craddick the Coward. We have encountered this Half-Orc during our time in Luskan and are seeking to bring him to Tyr's Justice. We rescued a human named Bran in the caverns and he alerted us to a larger encampment and other prisoners the Red Cloaks had taken, one of them being Cleggor Stonejaw. Tyr compelled my comrades and i to rescue Cleggor and a gnome named Ballodon from the Red Cloaks, were able to bring their leaders, Olea and Thorin to justice and removed the threat from the region. However, we have word that Craddick is still plaguing this region with his goblin and bugbear hoards.
Smiles to Ullur. "We intend to continue our search for these bandits on the morrow, however would request a place to shelter this evening, a warm fire and good company?" smiling, hands folded in anticipation of a warm welcome.
Ullur listens to Kragen's speech. "I have not heard of this half-orc Craddock. We have had the usual harassment from the orc and goblin tribes from deeper in the mountains. They know to expect to lose if they come here," he smiles at this. "Welcome to Barder ranch and enjoy our hospitality. I will ask that you surrender your steel while you are here. The Treefather," he says while touching the oak leaf pendant, "does not abide so much metal."
He gestures to this end of one of the long tables for you to sit and join the meal taking place. It is nothing fancy that is being served. There is a coarse bread, a stew of vegetables fortified with some venison, fresh butter that is excellent in quality and a flagon of small beer. Ullur retires near the end of the meal. The women and children work to clear the tables and the hall. You are shown to several rooms in the long, low building you saw as you entered. It seems to be a dormitory or barracks type building. Your steward asks that you divest yourselves of your weapons and armor to join Ullur for more discussion.
“Thank you Lord Ullur, we are humbled by your generosity.” Bows his head with respect “We honor the Treefather, and look forward good company and a fine meal.”
Kragen removes The Judge, his shield, backpack and his mail. Handing them to the stewards.
moves to sit at the table to enjoy the meal, a prayer to Tyr to bless this gathering and keep them safe.

Pointing in the direction of the smoke, Hoid introduces himself and says, “The smoke is over that way.”

Agreed… Kragen begins to follow the two formerly riders into the ranch.
Olar replies to Chadwick, “Follow if you like. We will hurry on horseback.”
Erbert follows along to the ranch, quiet through this entire encounter, waiting for the proper time to help. For the time being, he merely makes notes, drawings, notes of names and places. Something doesn’t seem right to him about this whole situation…
