He hums to himself, it would be quite the time investment... it bothers him. Not knowing things, but he isn't sure they have the time to spare at the moment. If they were magical he could make this snappy but it doesn't seem like his detect magic is reacting to them at the moment. He sighs, and goes to catch up with the group.

The pale winged tiefling gives the half-elf a smile and a gentle pat on her shoulder as she expertly opens the locked door, opening it and holding it for her, then stepping inside the room, briefly glancing around before deciding to examine the wooden desk and the 2 drawers in particular. "A comfy chair for you if you get bored."He says with a wink to Nisha.

Nisha manages to keep her cool despite the unexpected pats on her shoulder from Kaelen and Nathaniel. She isn't particularly inclined toward physical contact with strangers unless there's something to gain from them, and this situation doesn't exactly warrant it. However, as the door unlocks, revealing a much more inviting room, the rogue smoothly sidesteps the awkwardness. She attempts a somewhat appreciative nod toward the minotaur for his prayer for guidance, though the extent of her sincerity remains unclear.
"Ah, how considerate of you, Mr. Nathaniel," Nisha rolls her eyes, adding an extra touch of dramatic sarcasm to her expression. "I simply find it imperative to thoroughly examine every potential seating arrangement, nothing less," she adds more quietly with a sidelong glance and a smirk, then proceeds to explore the bookshelves, curious about the reading tastes of these assassins.
Laine sees the folders and sighs."..******* assassins... do they just have a few wizard's in their back pocket..? Whatever those say I wouldn't put too much stock in it, it's covered in illusion magic." He moves around the room to poke around, looking for anything of note or any lead to all this magic shit in the hideout. ________ Investigation: 15
Laine searches the room and finds a book hiddend behind another book that is more of a rough draft than a finished book. A few titles are crossed out leaving the final title Memoirs of the Sage in Shadows. Authored by Marym Vantoss. The first few pages are exceedingly boring, and parts seem most likely more fiction than fact about a young girl from the streets who was a prodigy and extremely gifted in magic. Then a page later speaks of the kind hug from their mother. Flipping to the middle you find a tale of a girl recruited by a shadow organization which the author literal calls the shadow syndicate. It includes her meteoric rise among the syndicate ranks, flipping to the end the book entails supposed how the Sage in Shadows valiantly defended the syndicate against agents of the law and in the end, she would sacrifice herself by hiding so that the syndicate would have a future.
Laine is not sure if that is true or if this Marym just hid during the final assault by the constabulary.
'Well, there you are,' he muses to himself. This explains the magic scattered across the place."It seems like a surviving member of our assassins guild was a magic prodigy.. explains a lot of the stuff we've been encountering."He keeps the book in his hands for a moment before sticking it his bag.
Gavyn enters the room as the others are poring over the book. Naturally, he takes a look. His brow furrows. "I've only ever heard rumors about this book," he says. "I didn't think it was real."

The pale winged tiefling merely chuckles at the half-elf's scathing retort. He then nods at Mr. Laine as he mentions the manilla folders are being covered with illusion magic, then taking a closer look at them without touching them to see if they are also trapped somehow.
After flicking through the pages of several books on the shelves for a few minutes, Nisha eventually grows bored and returns the last one. The tomes related to locks and humanoid anatomy briefly piqued her interest, since it is always good to confirm which vital organs can get you out of a nasty situation with any humanoid creature of course, but after a while even that became mundane. She does make a few mental notes where to point her bow next time, so the arrow does more damage, so perhaps not all will be in vain.
Moving toward the fireplace, the rogue tunes in to the ongoing conversation. "So, what have we actually found so far?"' she asks, briefly glancing behind her shoulder at Laine and Gavyn before returning her gaze to the fire. This room feels oddly out of place compared to the rest they have seen, too cosy, too inhabited. Her outstretched hand lingers over the flames for a moment, fingers tracing invisible lines in the air as she absorbs the comforting warmth. "Besides the strange vials, I mean. It might help to come up with a strategy... if we are all...ugh... up-to-date." Thank the gods she is not facing the rest so they can't see the emotion resolving into a grimace on her face as she struggles with the concept of functioning 'as part of a team'. If the tabaxi could see her, he'd betray her all over again just for entertaining the idea.
Investigation:23 in case there is anything interesting around the fireplace
Laine leans against the bookshelf. "Well, to summarize my findings, it seems the sole survivor of this assassins guild is a woman by the name of Marym Vantoss. A powerful mage in her own right if her autobiography and the enchantments that dot this place is to be believed. Thus far I have noted the braziers that have evocation magic, the rug in the adjacent room from there that is transmutation, and those folders Nathaniel found that stamped with illusion magic. I am wondering if all those are connected in some way, four braziers, four vials, a rug that could be a door. That kind of thing..."He shrugs. "Either way, whereever Marym is, I bet she'll be back soon."
The pale winged tiefling quickly looks through the rest of the manilla folders to see if there was anything more interesting there while listening to Mr. Laine's summary with a few nods. He couldn't help but wonder if the Judicator Augustine was in fact this Marym, hiding in plain sight, but it so far seemed too far fetched to introduce the idea to the others quite yet. "Do you think we can somehow remove the illusion on these and see what they really say?" Nathaniel asks the others, looking at the arcanely schooled Mr. Laine in particular.
Nisha thinks about Laine's words for a moment. "And there is this... sort of magical fireplace too"
With a clearer understanding of the ongoing situation, the rogue finally relaxes a bit, redirecting her focus from emotions and drama to more practical matters. Surely, there must be some way to crack at least one of these mysterious puzzles... Of course, it will be good to also hear what results Gavyn's search has yielded on the other side of the hall.
Nisha turns toward the desk, her gaze settling on the folders. While Laine contemplates a method to dispel the illusion, she offers another solution to the tiefling. "Maybe try bringing it closer to the fireplace. Sometimes things look different around fire." She leans in for a closer look at the inkwell. Recalling the events in Ebar Hall's office, where they had to apply the coating to the tag to decipher the code, she adds, "And if that doesn't yield anything, perhaps try writing something with this ink?"
The pale winged tiefling listens to Nisha's suggestions, then smiles and nods. "Clever girl." He says with a sincere appreciative smile before trying what she had suggested, first holding the folders and the papers of the folders by the fire, then trying the ink and the pens to see if there was any unexpected reaction to the papers of the folders. He didn't usually have much patience for exercises in trial and error but considering what they had seen last night this at least seemed wortwhile trying.

For the testing of the vials, it would take 1-hour to identify them. Are you okay spending that time to figure out what they are?
The other option is taste test.

Nathaniel finds the desk is well maintained and without a single stain from any errant ink.
In the drawers you find manilla folders held close by rubber band. The Dying Viel emblem is on the front of each folder.
Laine as you catch up with the group you notice an aura of illusion around the folders.
Do you pick up the folders?

Nathaniel does not notice any traps
The pale winged tiefling then simply decides to pick up and open the top manilla file, well aware that things was not what they seemed.

Nathaniel reads a boring treatise on diplomacy from 50 years ago.
Nisha sees the cheery fire burning away in the fireplace even though there is no wood.
