'I have a potential lead. Concerns the daughter of the town's founder. Witchcraft and all that. Wasn't that much liked. Might be worth looking into.'
"How long would it take to look in to? If it's connected to what's going on, then it might give us an edge once we find the lair."
She shudders
"Last night was a close call. If we're going to face those things on their home turf we need every advantage we can get, but not if it means we're stomping around in the woods after dark."
"What do you think," she says to the others, "can we spare an hour or two to investigate? Some of us can get supplies together while the rest follow up on Kalgren's lead"
Kalgren thought for a moment. 'Not sure. It concerns just one person: the daughter of the town's founder. She has a grudge with the town and being a wood elf could actually live long enough to come back and settle it now.'
He processed the comment about the mayor. 'It's going to depend on how cooperative the mayor is and how well organised and complete his library will be.'
"I suppose we can take a little bit of time to investigate before heading out into the forest. I just think we are going to want as much daylight as possible. Omen replies.
As the party decides to investigate a bit more before heading to the forest, Cassian makes his way over to the group. "Good morning friends." He says, a hint of weariness in his voice. "I noticed you were about to head out so I thought I'd catch you before you leave. I just wanted to say, we will be burying Zale around noon. Elenor said you already examined her body, so I assume proceeding with the funeral is alright."He pauses for a moment. "I heard you may visit the mayor? If you do, please let him know what's going on."
"You know... we never did speak with the mayor. Maybe it would be wise to pay them a visit before we leave." Omen would reply as he looked to the group, feeling almost embarrassed that he has forgotten all about the mayor.
"You mean no one's told him yet? I know the disappearances have become pretty common but I would imagine a death..."
She looks at the others with a sigh.
"...is there anything else he needs to know about?"
"Well he's been holed up in his manor as of late. Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen him leave. As much as it paints him as a coward, it seems that many of the townsfolk are angry with him simply because he can't do much to help with the situation. From what Bill says he's hiding more from the citizens than he is from whatever is causing the disappearances."
Bill nods along with Cassian's statement.
"Well, right now I don't have any other information for him other than perhaps cause of death. I personally do not like sharing information with clients until a final answer can be confidently given, but I'll leave it up to you to discuss with him your findings."
"There's a difference between not being able to do much and choosing to do nothing," Kit says with open disdain, "Any leader that has to hide from their people is no leader."
Kit's demeanor takes on an uncharacteristic haughtiness, the lilt of her Elvish accent more pronounced, as she passes judgement.
"Alright, let's go visit the mayor I suppose quick before make our next move." The Kenku would say as he adjusts his hat. He glances towards Kit and a small smirk spreads across his face seeing the frustration in Kit's demeanor.
Cassian laughs, "Well said sister."He replies letting his own elfish accent slip though.
With that, you all head out towards the mayor's house. Even without Kalgren and Thar's help, it would have been easy to locate. The manor rests just past the town hall at the top of a small hill leaving it raised slightly higher then the rest of Withermore. Assuming one of you knock on the door, you hear the sound of hurried footsteps just before a voice says. "Who's there?"
Thar, who shares Kit feelings about the mayor pounds the door again
"Ones who seems to care more from your people that you do. Open up... Mayor... we do have some questions that need answering before we go and actually do something to help Whitemore..."
Well, maybe he wasn't the more level-headed of them to reply but his patience was growing thin.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"More specifically..." Omen would reply while removing his had and moving close to the door. "We are bounty hunters and investigators. We are here trying to find out who is stealing all townsfolk with Fey ancestry." The kenku would say casually. "You will have to pardon my..... work associate. We had a late night fighting off the strange plant beasts that have been plaguing your town. I am sure you understand how stressful that can be."
Omen would then wait a few moments and if the door doesn't open up on its own, he would casually reach into his pocket and pull out a lockpick and open the door himself.
There is a pause before the group finally hears the sounds of several dead bolts being unlatched. The door swings open revealing a short man, with a balding head and a greying mustache. His cloths are of fair quality, but are a bit disheveled as if he doesn’t take the time to fold, or have anyone else fold them to keep the wrinkles out. "Say what you will about me, it's nothing I haven't heard before."He says tiredly, "Even if you think poorly of me, I'm glad you are here. Please, come in."He steps to the side holding the door for you to enter. Then he leads you to the sitting room. "Plant beasts? That's the first I've heard of that."
The house isn’t particularly dirty, but it obviously hasn’t been cleaned in a while. There’s dust on almost every surface that doesn’t see regular use, and there are letters everywhere. Some of which are unopened. If looked at, most of the unopened ones have no name or address. They are likely from people of the town. Many of the opened ones look like returned letters that the Major had sent to the Capital.
In an intentional show of contempt, Kit wrinkles her nose and then casts Prestidigitation on a chair (if available, if not then any flat surface will do) to clean it and takes a seat.
"Should we pretend to be surprised? Yes. There are plant monsters. Specifically roses. And our associate Kalgren believes it may have something to do with the daughter of the town's founder."
Amery follows along in silence though he too is wondering about this so-called mayor. "Are the rumors true mayor. Are you holing up in your home to leave your people with this infestation of plant creatures where each day more people die or disappear."
"may we come inside?" Omen asks with a tip of his hat as the others begin their questioning.
(He took you inside XD)
Mayor Mickael turns his tied gaze to Amery, "Look. No one has said anything to me about plant creatures. Yes, I've been practically confined to my house, but that doesn't mean I'm not trying. The citizens are panicked, and they think I'm not doing enough. I can't disagree with them, but at the same time what more am I supposed to do? The town guard is practically nonexistent, and the surrounding cities keep ignoring my requests for aid! "He gestures to the heaps of letters, "Only one has even responded and all they sent was one bloody knight and his squire! TCH, and he won't even talk to me! I'm no fighter, so without help I've no way of dealing with this kind of threat. Especially if it's some sort of...plant creature infestation. This is why I've been sending word out to gather folks like yourselves."He puts his face in his hands and sighs, then drops his hands back into his lap, "The only other thing I can think of doing is trying to speak with the larger cities in person, but that would require me to leave town. How would that make me look to the people? They already think I'm doing nothing, that would just make it look as if I'm abandoning them." He shakes his head and looks at Kit, "I don't expect you all to be impressed with me, but I will help you as much as I can. You want to know about the town's founders?" He stands back up, "My family managed to save a few manuscripts but not much. Even the one's we salvaged...well most of them are in pretty bad shape. Come I'll take you to my private library."
Following the Mayor once again, you find yourself in a small windowless room. Each wall contains a bookshelf, but despite them being full of books and some scrolls, this is a pretty sad excuse for a library. The mayor stands by the door and gestures into the room, "The three manuscripts on the top of the back shelf are the oldest I have. If you don't have any other questions for me, I'll be in the sitting room. It's a bit crowded in here."
He lingers a few moments to see if you have any other questions.
"What he lacks in leadership and martial prowess he clearly does not make up for as an archivist," Kit says as she pulls down the recommended books and carries them over to Amerys, "do you think these will have what you're looking for?"
"I don't recall anyone mentioning a knight," she says, turning to Omen, "What do you suppose happened to them?"

Kit looks between Kalgren and Amery.
"So that's one vote for investigation and one vote taking action now," she says, looking at Omen and Thar expectantly...
Kalgren thought for a moment. 'Not sure. It concerns just one person: the daughter of the town's founder. She has a grudge with the town and being a wood elf could actually live long enough to come back and settle it now.'

It's not going to happen again. Not this time. You won't let it.
