Moneo takes the brooch and pins it to his vest, standing tall at being addressed as royalty. 'this will take a bit of getting used to,' he thinks to himself. He then replies, asking, though rather sure he knows the answer already, "Who was this prisoner with whom they escaped? What had they done?" Looking to Barreknar he nods, adding, "Yes, it would be interesting to talk with them if possible." Looking back then to the bullywug he continues, "And what is it that you all do here for Bavlorna?"
"It was a little dragon. I didn't really see much of it, or know why it was imprisoned. You would have to ask the king to talk with the prisoner. As for Bavlorna, we keep her happy so we may continue to live here. But she rarely leaves her cottage so we don't normally deal with her."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"I see. A little dragon eh? Sounds cute! We actually were hoping to speak with your king, and Bavlorna actually. Though it might be interesting to talk with this prisoner as well if that would be possible," Moneo says. ((persuasion 15))
"Uhh.... Perhaps we visit royalty then scold prisoner." (Not sure if Barreknar is understanding the conversation based on language but that's what he would have included either way)
"Just cross the bridge and you will be with King Gullop XIX. He can advise on the other requests."
Assuming you do then start to cross the bridge, the flat wood-plank bridge, which spans an arm of the lake, is lined on one side by rows of bullywug heads on wooden spikes. Barreknar these are the spikes and heads that you saw in the river.
At the centre of the bridge, a strange small figure sits with its feet dangling over one side (image in spoiler. This is the figure that Fa'amesaw in the river). The figure appears to be talking to itself in bemoaned tones. But then the severed bullywug heads nearby erupt in a cacophony of voices—some indignant, others sympathetic. A few in a more distant row yell, “What? I couldn’t hear what they said!”
Moneo is just about to go up to the scarecrow to ask if it is the Clapperclaw that they have been told about, and then is astonished to see a row of severed bullywug heads talking amongst themselves. He cautiously looks to the others of his group, but then looks ahead to the heads and coughs to get their attention, saying, "Ah... oh... sorry to disturb... Is... Is this the way to the king's chambers?"
A number of the heads all start talking at once, each one trying to talk over the others so it becomes quite hard to hear. You manage to make out a main line of answer, mostly because multiple heads say it at some point in their indignant rambling (or something with similar wording): "Bah, some king he is. Downfall has going downhill since I ruled it. There is rumours of another coup in the works, its about time. Should have left me in charge though."
The scarecrow comes over to you, the head rattling a bit as they move. "Don't let these heads kill the mood. The answer to answer your question is a deadsimple yes. You would think that they would know that being helpful is a way to get a head in life." You notice that they pause a bit after each pun to gauge the reaction before they moved onto the next line.
"Were you all previous kings?" Moneo says, perhaps putting things together. Then asking the head the spoke to him of the coup, "What was the coup that took you down? And why do you think the next will be successful. Surely the king will have his eyes peeled if kings here are... replaced... so quickly,"looking to the heads and how many there are.
To the scarecrow he says, "Are you Clapperclaw by chance? Though... I've heard you used to have a different head of your own? Probably not one of these though I'd guess..."
He then looks to the others in the group to see if they have anything to add.
Fa'ame approaches the figure at the center of the bridge, ignoring the heads. She keeps her distance from the figure but will study it carefully for anything familiar or noteworthy about it. Is it a construct or a naturally living thing? Are there any familiar markings on it? Does it seem to be carrying anything?
When she deems it an appropriate time (probably if/after the figure responds to Moneo's question) she'll speak to it on Sylvan:
"Excuse me. I saw you. It was a vision, I think. A reflection in the river. Did you send it on purpose?"

Barreknar looks around at all the speaking heads. His hand tightens the handle of his morningstar. He starts muttering in a low voice, "Bodiless heads aren't supposed to talk."
(How far are the closest heads to Barreknar. If they are within weapons reach, Barreknar might start swinging at them)
Eliaanore chuckles to herself in a whimsy, caught by every last one of the scarecrow's puns. With a sordid little grin, she snidely says, "Why, I've heard of talking heads in politics, but this is ridiculous!"
"Yes. We are all the heads of previous kings. He was the coup for me" and the eyes gesture to an adjacent head. "Coups happen all the time. End with a trial by combat so no amount of watching can really stop that"
"Yes I am Clapperclaw. How did you know?" Sylvan:
"I did not send any visions. I have heard that the water that flows from here sometimes shows what is currently happening in downfall"
The heads are just out of melee. But only just. No one responds to the muttering.
To the heads, Moneo asks, “How long is a king usually able to hold the throne? And what do you think about the current king? We were on our way to meet him actually. I assume you aren’t planning the next coup, seeing as you haven’t a body with which to sit on the throne… how do you know of the plan?”
Fa'ame regards Clapperclaw's reply. "Fascinating. What a unique realm this truly is..." She continues to address Clapperclaw. "You seem troubled, small one. What ails you, if you don't mind me asking?"

Barreknar stares at the heads, trying to decide how to get them to stop talking, already without a body should have taken care of that. He is bothered by the speaking heads

"It varies. It depends on how much support someone has. The current king is weak as most of the others here" (based on how many heads seem to say something similar, you gather that they all think they were decent rulers, and that no one else does quite as good a job as they do) "and we hear rumours as people walk past. But as the king is a fool, he will believe that he can beat any coup so he won't be bothered by the rumours."

"My beautiful head was stolen by that awful Agdon and his crew. And now I have to put up with this ugly thing. If only someone could get it back for me. I don't have much to offer as reward, but I can take you through the mists to Thither if you recover it."

You don't see any way of getting them to stop. Maybe if you had a way to sew the mouths up? But they are just about out of reach.
Fa'ame's eyes grow wide at Clapperclaw's mention of Agdon. "We know the rogue well. In fact, we bested him not long ago. Put an end to his thievery. His former crew are the ones who led us to this place. Do tell, friend... What did your lovely head look like?"
Even as she asks the question, Fa'ame wracks her brain trying to remember if she saw anything that looked like a head in Agdon's horde. Her eyes then turn to the heads on spikes as she strokes her chin, waiting for Clapperclaw's reply.

When they say this, you think back (to post #599) and remember that Agdon did mention this. But wasn't particularly open about the details of why it was missing, with it now making sense.

Fa'ame listens intently but holds her tongue, lest she say something that might give away their support of the fairy dragon.

She really is a fickle soul.
