Unless Varden has anything else to say, Galdric excuses himself, sends one more hopeful glance at the acolytes, and takes his leave. He will now return to the caravan and bring those present up to speed on what he’s learned and about Varden’s offer
Galdric arrives at the caravan to see the indignant crowd complaining about Varden as Horros heals the needy.
Transformed into a young human boy, Zyzix carefully steps out from the alley, blending into the chaotic aftermath of the attack on Shadowdale. He approaches a group of townsfolk gathered near the remnants of the market square, his face skillfully expressing shock and worry.
"Excuse me," he asks in a trembling voice, attracting the attention of the villagers. "I hid during the attack. Did anyone see the attackers? Why would they target our town?"
A woman, her face smeared with soot, responds with a look of concern. "Oh, dear, it was mercenaries. Some had Sembian accents. They seemed like they were searching for someone."
An elderly man chimes in, "Yes, Sembian accents, very odd for these parts. They were asking about a man named Gort. It was as if they were hired to find him."
A bartender, his apron dusted with debris, adds to the conversation. "That Gort fellow, he was in the tavern not long ago. Looked like he'd been through the desert and said he was headed to Sembia."
Zyzix finds this puzzling. Why would Sembia send mercenaries to search for someone in Shadowdale, especially if that person was supposedly heading to Sembia? This inconsistency gnaws at his curiosity, but he keeps his thoughts to himself.
"Hmm, that was easier than I thought it would be," Zyzix thinks to himself as the townsfolk nearby prattle on. He was rather intrigued by this "Gort" fellow that was mentioned a few times. He had a feeling that if he were to learn more about this Gort, the Veil would want to hear about what he learned.
Zyzix nods his head in understanding as they talk, absorbing the information like a sponge absorbs water. After they finish, he wipes his runny nose across his arm, and with a few tears brimming in his eyes, he weakly says, "I need to find my Ma and Pa. They told me to hide, but they went to go help the others." His voice waivers with sorrow as he quietly says, "Haven't found them yet..."
With that, he wipes a tear from his eye and begins tentatively making his way through the edges of the crowd "in search of his parents." When he senses the opportunity to change forms without notice, he quickly does so, adopted the form of a young man several years older than his previous guise. Still thin, he gives himself short, dark brown hair and a farmer's tan. He looks much healthier than what he did before, but he gives himself a slight limp. His illusory clothes don't change, but hopefully he looks more like young farmer little over half a foot taller than the scrawny boy he just was.
((Essentially, he's going to try to see if he can get any info about Gort if able. If he can't find much, he'll head back to the caravan under the guise of "Drax."))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As Horros tends to the wounded, he makes sure to make small talk to gather what little information the civilians might know, "Sembians you say? Tell me more, maybe we can look into it and find the cause. Was the festival well known to those outside of the town?" He continues to to heal wounds and instructs Taya on basic medical procedures when possible, "As a follower of the Soul Forger, I'll be sure to do what I can to rebuild what you've lost... at least while I'm here."
(Please roll anything that might be needed, but I'm also rolling history to see if I can remember who these Sembians are, what they might want... 21 ) As the rest of the adventurers join back with the caravan, Horros will wave them over to assist.
Haj returns to the caravan carrying a longbow that he 'unfortunately' forgot to give to the guard before they parted ways, glad to see that everyone else seems to be in one piece.
He passes on the information from the tower, and then goes in search of Harben to let him know that it is time to part ways.

((Essentially, he's going to try to see if he can get any info about Gort if able. If he can't find much, he'll head back to the caravan under the guise of "Drax."))
Zyzix surveys the rest of the crowd, asking and listening around for information on Gort. Unfortunately Gort seems to have been quite the recluse. He came to town with a group of adventurers, left heading towards the desert, then came back alone, seemingly haunted by what he found. The only thing anyone seems to know what that he was headed towards sembia. He makes his way back to the caravan in his restored Drax persona.
Taya continue to help Horros with the growing influx of patients. While she has next to no experience in medical care she will do her best to follow his instructions and lend an ear to the townsfolk’s pains. If possible she will steer conversations to Gort and inquire about who he is, what he might have done in town, when he was last seen and his possible whereabouts. Anything noteworthy really. He was a stranger here (presumingly) and he might have drawn some attention. He was of some interest to Harvey, recalls Taya from their conversation the evening before.(please roll the appropriate skills)
As with Zyzix, the only information that Taya can uncover about Gort is that he headed out to the desert by way of The Sword with a band of adventurers and came back alone and haunted. Harben does note that Gort and his party came from Sembia.
18 ) As the rest of the adventurers join back with the caravan, Horros will wave them over to assist.
As Horros silently administers his healing touch to the injured villagers, their vehement outpourings about the Sembians strike a discordant note with his own understanding of the people. In his experience, the Sembians are known largely as a peaceful, mercantile community, their society thriving on trade and negotiation rather than violence and deceit.
The heated words of a young mother in the crowd, holding a sleeping child, are laced with fear and anger. "Those Sembians, they're all the same – cold, calculating traders who'd sacrifice anything for profit. They care nothing for the lives they ruin!"
An elderly man, leaning heavily on a makeshift staff, adds bitterly, "They hide behind their contracts and their coin, but we know the truth. They're a heartless lot, ready to betray anyone for their own gain."
A teenager, his arm crudely bandaged, chimes in with a fiery look in his eyes. "They think they can do whatever they please, trampling over us like we're nothing. It's time someone taught them a lesson."
The disparity between Horros’ own knowledge of the Sembians and the vitriolic descriptions offered by the townspeople is stark. He fears the attacks have fanned the flames of existing tensions and driven the people into an irrational, wrathful rage. The drums of war resonate in the townsfolks voices.
Horros nods along, trying not to tick anyone off too bad, but can't help but challenge the notion slightly, "That doesn't seem to add up hmm, could it be someone's tryin to rile you all up and place the blame on the Sembians? I don't want you all to be overly paranoid, but brandishing weapons like that seems counter to normal trends.." He urges the townsfolk to not jump to conclusions and offers to look further into things if possible, assuring them that the town will come through the situation. He ponders the information before sharing it with the others when possible and in a private space.
Haj returns to the caravan carrying a longbow that he 'unfortunately' forgot to give to the guard before they parted ways, glad to see that everyone else seems to be in one piece.
He passes on the information from the tower, and then goes in search of Harben to let him know that it is time to part ways.
Harben nods. “Very well. Was good traveling with you. Stay safe out there. I’ve been around enough to see things like this before and I’d reckon we’re on course for war.”
As the evening sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the now quiet town of Shadowdale, the members of your party reconvene at the caravan. The air is heavy with the scent of smoldering wood and the echoes of the day's battles. Despite the tragedy and loss of life, there's a sense of accomplishment among the group; each encounter was met with courage and resolve, altering the course of the siege in significant ways.
The caravan, parked on the outskirts of the town, offers a solemn but safe space for the group to gather. Around a small fire, you sit in a loose circle, faces illuminated by the flickering flames. The mood is subdued, a mix of weariness and contemplation.
As the group settles, the reality of their situation becomes clear. Shadowdale may be quieter now, but the threat isn't over. The siege may have been lifted, but many questions remain unanswered. Who were these attackers? What were their motives? And most importantly, what is your next move?

I'm probably laughing.
It is apparently so hard to program Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul spell-swapping into dndbeyond they had to remake the game without it rather than implement it.
After the group sat together sharing their various stories together, Galdric addresses the group:
“So to review what we know. The Lords of the realm sent expeditions to investigate strange happenings in the Anauroch. None returned save Gort, who saw something strange and terrible, and asked to be taken to Shadowdale. Gort had left a week ago we know not where. The Arcane Brotherhood sent two acolytes to Elminster's tower searching for any clues as to what is happening in the Anauroch.
Today, Black Serpent Brigade, led by Riggs, a known mercenary group known for performing the most vile of tasks, attacked Shadowdale. They did so during a known festival, searching for Gort and to raid the Wizard Tower for anything with magic. We aren’t quite sure if there was something specific they were searching for. Orders for Riggs were found in the abandoned watch tower outside the city. Riggs was to make a terrifying spectacle of the attack while also locating Gort and raiding the Tower. Afterwards the band is to head for Snowmantle, about a week's journey. The orders were signed by a figure known as "Z".
After the attack, Lord Varden claims that the attack was anticipated and prepared for, but the lack of adequate defense says otherwise. Varden has offered us the task of hunting down the Black Serpent Brigade, but this offer seems like a diversion to prevent any further questions. The villagers also seem to place some blame on Lord Varden, who seems to become less trustworthy all the time. The Black Serpent Brigade spoke with Sembian accents and used Sembian weapons, but seemed to be trying a little too hard to implicate Sembia. Possibly to instigate further conflict? Unclear as of now. Have I left anything out? With the knowledge at our disposal, we need to decide what we are going to do next, if anything at all? What do you all think?”
((Just clarifying, gort was headed to sembia and elminster isn’t here at all and hasn’t been for decades. His tower lies in ruins, the “turns pale” stuff was supposed to be Gort but I think I got my wires crossed. Other than that this looks good.))

Horros plops down by the fire, listening to the recounting of the days events, he lays back covering his eyes in exhaustion, but also stress. "Well shit...it seems like we've stepped on hot iron with no shoes on with this one. “The problem is Gort has a week’s head start and could have gone in any direction. Without anything more to go on I fear it will be impossible to find him. On the other hand, a group the size of The Serpents will not be hard to track, especially since we know where they’re going. Since we are fewer I don’t think it would take long to catch up to them. The Serpents also have more manpower and resources to devote to searching for Gort. I have a hard time imagining a scenario in which we find him first.”
