On their watch Finn tries not to fall asleep and he is clearly uncomfortable in his armor, not really finding a position to sit, or rest, or stand so he finally sighs and walk a little bit around the perimeter trying not to make too much noise to wake the others.
( I am not sure about the perception roll... it says it is a 10 but if you mouseover it it says it is a 23... )
(I'm going to have to say that it's a 10 since it also says that it's 16+7, and I know Jodie doesn't have a +7 bonus to Perception)
Flinn and Jodie's watch is uneventful. They chat, mill about, and do whatever they need to in order to stay awake, until they've run out their 2 hours before Korba and Rhaenys take over.
The half-drow and the changeling vigilantly guard the party, for the vast majority of their shift nothing happens. But, as Rhaenys prepares to wake Hewelathan and Lady Elora for their turn at watch, Korba takes one last look around the clearing... and catches a glimpse of something staring at the party from the shadows...
The huge black wolf stands in the trees, watching, its tail slowly swishing back and forth until its eyes meet Korba's. For a brief moment, it almost seems surprised. But then... its lips curl back into something between a snarl and a sick grin. After what feels like hours, the nightmarish canine's form disappears into the shadows, an afterimage of its burning yellow eyes lingering for a few more moments...
“Did you see that?”Korba asks to Rhaenys, pointing out into the woods where the wolf disappeared. “These woods maybe weren’t the best choice. Cultists and now wolves…”He then warns the next watch to keep their eyes out, knowing that there is something else also watching them.
He then warns the next watch to keep their eyes out, knowing that there is something else also watching them.
Hewelathan thanks Korba for the warning. He asks whether it seemed like a "normal" wolf or more like a wolf-like monster, and he promises to keep a careful watch.
Feeling refreshed after his test, Hewelathan chats with Lady Elora while he watches for signs of the "wolf" or anything else approaching / watching their camp.
From what you saw, you got the strong sense that the creature was something otherworldly and utterly evil rather than a simple wolf, or even a dire wolf.

The Druid keeps his eyes peeled, but the remainder of the night passes uneventfully. In the morning, all awaken refreshed. It's only a couple more hours journey to reach the city of Tormere. Is there anything else that anyone wants to do before heading to the city? If you want to go straight to the port, Lady Elora will happily offer you accommodations until you are ready to set sail... though she will still need to know where you're going if you want her to help you book passage.

Hewelathan converses with Lady Elora in Elvish. He shares some of the stories of his travels before he came to the temple of Ilmaster. He asks politely about her history, listening for any hints that could tie into their present circumstances: signs that she crossed paths with Firion and his agents in the past, previous encounters with evil and otherworldly monsters, or any dealings with cursed magic items.
Hewelathan also asks about her ancestor Sir Garrik Hercan and the seven heroes who defeated the mad Dragon Lord Sserrah Nightbane. He expresses a particular interest in tales of dragons and the great heroes who face them. How did they supposedly defeat the dragon, and did the gods gift the heroes with magic items to aid in their quest? Was the dragon utterly defeated in the end or just banished? Were there any legends or prophecies of its future return?
If he does not detect anything suspicious or evasive in what she shares (Insight18), just before it's time to wake everyone up, Hewelathan shares this with her: "My companions and I are on our own quest of sorts. Fate seems to have brought us together, but powerful forces are already arrayed against us...powerful enough to defy the priests of Ilmater in their own temple! We are afraid, and desperate need now drives us to seek advice in mysterious and arcane matters. The priests provided us what help they could, but even they could not do much. On the advice of the High Priest of Ilmater, we hope to travel next to the Shaded Isle to ask advice from dark and dangerous powers there. Lady Elora, do you know any captain brave enough to sail near to such a place?"
The Druid keeps his eyes peeled, but the remainder of the night passes uneventfully. In the morning, all awaken refreshed. It's only a couple more hours journey to reach the city of Tormere. Somehow, the clouds seem to have gotten even heavier, Hewelathan can't shake the feeling that his belt may have something to do with that...
Hewelathan scowls at the clouds, annoyed but resigned. If they make good progress today, he hopes that they'll make it back out of the heavy cloud cover.
In the morning, when it's as bright as it's going to get, Hewelathan asks Korba to show him the spot where he thought he saw the wolf monster. He'd like to check whether it at least left tracks in the mud or other signs of its presence like a regular animal. (Survival? 13)
The elvish woman seems to be much calmer after spending most of the night in a meditation trance. She politely converses with Hewelathan, and explains that the seven heroes were granted divine blessing so that together they could seal the dragon away, deep within the earth where it remains imprisoned to this day. Each of these heroes was then entrusted with an item of great power that acted as a key to the dragon's prison. As she lists off the names and characteristics of each of the heroes, one stands out from the others to Hewelathan: the seventh hero was a powerful wizard named Matic Akkron (I will leave it up to Ben_Evolent if they wish to pry further upon hearing that).
In the morning, when the druid examines the tracks, it quickly becomes clear that, though the prints are superficially similar to a wolf's, there is something off about them. And... it almost looks as if there are light scorch marks around the prints.

Tytus wakes up. He was sleeping invisible but remembers to be visible the moment he wakes up. After rolling his blanket, he stops for a while, grabs his shin, massage it a little (about 2 or 3 motions) with a little wince on his face and then straightens up. He seems oblivious to the fact that Hewelathan is inspecting the grass near their camp.
- Good morning everyone, I guess we better get going. If we are lucky maybe we will find someone to take us to that dreaded island. /then he stops for a minute and thinks/ - Maybe that is not the best approach? How are we going to get back from there? Maybe it would be better to try charter something so we have a way of getting back? Does anyone here knows how to sail? /He sounds like he is thinking aloud and speaking to himself, but he definitely said it out loud. Whether he should do that or not, came to his mind later, alas too late to swallow his words back.

Hewelathan points the scorch marks out to Korba. When they return to the rest of the group, Hewelathan has a worried expression. He asks the group, "Has anyone heard of a monster or--I don't know--a spirit? a fiend? Some sort of evil monster that resembles a large black wolf but that could scorch the ground where it walks?"

Tytus attention is immediately drawn by Hewelathan. He rushes to get close and wants to know why would he be interested in such things? What became of this Matic Akkron after the dragon was banished?"
Lady Elora pauses in thought at the druid's questions.
"Ah yes... Matic Akkron... much of his history has been lost to time... but, as a matter of fact, he did have some relation to the drow. It was said that a Drow spy seduced him when he was still a young court mage on the island of Mouver, and she used his position as court mage to steal secrets from the rulers of that land. The poor man had no idea what she was planning until it was too late, and his city was lost to a massive invasion from the Underdark, the people carried off into slavery or slaughtered in blood sacrifices to Lolth. He barely escaped the slaughter with his life, but he dedicated his existence to finding a way to slay Lolth herself for what had come to pass. I don't know for sure what happened to him after he helped to seal away Sserrah. Many stories claim that he returned to what was left of Mouver and lived the rest of his days in seclusion, having grown too tired to continue his crusade against the matron of the Dark Elves. Others say that he perished in a confrontation with Lolth herself. It's hard to say what the truth is, though I would like to think that such a great man perished as part of some final heroic quest."
Regarding the prints, you realize quickly that you are dealing with some type of fiend, probably something similar to a hell hound (though you get the feeling that this identification isn't perfect).
Upon inspecting the paw mark, Tytus is horrified and excited a bit. He has an idea, a sketch in his mind about what that creature is. He is not certain, it is hard to be certain after just a paw mark. What he know is, if that something caught their scent, they are in trouble. However it is his first after the incident when he found something with the same hellfire scent that he still smells on himself. And that is progress. He think to himself: -Just don't die or it won't matter. And then he says to others:
- We have got a problem here. That something that left its track here is not some mundane wolf. That is from a hellish creature, somewhat canine for sure, but fiendish in nature. If it caught our scent i doubt it will loose it. Watch your every step from now on, and expect it anywhere, and probably in numbers. Suddenly i want to get on that boat even more. And i doubt that fire storm from the sky could save us from them, however being on a boat on water just might i hope.

Listening to the story of the Drow, Korba thinks back to his Drow history ((nope… 7)) to see if there is anything he can recall of the story from the Drow perspective. After having it mentioned that the wolf he saw the previous night might be a fiend of some kind, he says, “Do we have the hells hunting us as well now? It seems too much of a coincidence for it to show up after we dispatched one of the cultists..”
Rhaenys had a hard time sleeping after what Korba saw during their shift. But, luckily, she was able to find enough rest. She wakes up to see that the staff has again turned her in to a "he". This time he looks like a young male human in his late twenties, with curly brown hair, blue eyes and a goatee. He lets out a frustrated sigh, and realizing that Lady Elora and Sir Barnabas don't know the first thing about his cursed shapeshifting, he quickly grabs the shifting cloak and puts it, trying to hide his new features. Deep inside, he knows he can't stop them from noticing the female changeling has been replaced by someone else, but he just doesn't want to speak about all this right now.
Regarding the hell hounds, he says softly:
- I guess this shouldn't be such a surprise with you-know-who on our backs and all. Perhaps this is just one of his minions. I hope they can't follow us where we are going - Rhaenys says, refering to the Ethereal Plane.
"This sword is going to be the death of me..." he whispers in his own voice.
Hewelathan maybe doesn't understand Flinn's split "personalities," but his sharp ears hear the sotto voce comment. He says, "Or the death of your companions. I admire your bravery, but don't let it make you foolhardy."
Hewelathan listens to Tytus, Korba, and Raenhys and shifts uncomfortably. Despite talking with his new friends in the open wilderness, Hewelathan feels strangely claustrophobic. When he acquired the belt, he had hoped to put it to good use in defending the wild lands from unnatural aberrations and other monsters. But the last 24 hours seem to have tangled his fate with dark wizards, liches, would-be dragon gods, and now, apparently, evil fiends. It makes him feel anxious and paranoid.
Hewelathan tries to calm himself by focusing on concrete things that they can do. He says, "There's no way for us to know whether this hellish wolf was summoned by our enemy or whether it represents a new foe. The question is: what do we do now? Should we try to follow its tracks to see whether it leads us back to its master? Or should we leave quickly and head to Tormere, hoping to take to sea before it finds us again?"
Before the group breaks camp, Hewelathan sits apart for a few minutes and meditates, trying to reconnect with Nature. Thinking of the forces arrayed against them, he feels like they're in even more danger than he realized. He adjusts his prepared spells to focus on defense, healing, and escape. He hopes that they won't find themselves in a desperate fight against a fiend before they reach the port.
Tytus was not even thinking about it that way, follow up on that hound-creature? Interesting idea. Deadly but interesting, Tytus would like to know more about it, and about the place it came from of course.
- To be perfectly honest with you I must say that i would be interested in pursuing that creature, even though i would have not thought about it without Hewelathan. But I do not see now any direct links between that creature and our common goal. Pursuing it would answer my private interests. That being said, if any of you have a reason to try and track that creature, you got my vote and support. If not, then i do not see why we should do that, well maybe eventually to not have someone hunting us every night. Looking at it that way, may be a point in case itself.
He is very interested in that wolf, but he knows that he can not do it alone, and even if he could, that goes second. First is to reclaim his life, second is to reclaim afterlife. In that order, or it won't be worth it.
