Ren pushes open the heavy wooden doors, causing light to pour into the building. As you make your way outside, the seagulls scatter into the air, leaving the corpse of the recently deceased to rot in the sun undisturbed temporarily. Looking down the road ahead of you, you can see that there are roughly two city blocks before you reach the tall steel gates that separate the city from the quarantine zone. As you make your way down the street, you pass a few abandoned residences and businesses that you think could have some useful items in them. in particular, you pass an abandoned bakery with a few weathered tables sitting out front where you imagine people used to sit and enjoy fresh baked goods. You also pass what looks to be an abandoned tavern where the roof has caved in.
Not every building is empty as you make your way towards the gate however. A small butcher shop has a light inside and seemingly fresh meat hanging in a dirty store front window. An old man sells a few questionable looking vegetables from a battered cart in front of a makeshift garden. down side alleys you occasionally see people watching you from the shadows, or catch a glimpse of a rat or cat slinking around rubbish piles lining the street. Occasionally you see a light or movement inside some of the homes lining the street but if anyone inside those buildings as aware of your presence, no one comes to greet you.
As you get close to the city gates, you hear a loud horn blast from the ramparts above the wall. multiple crossbowman line the top of the gate and many more guards holding halberds approach the steel bars for the gate before poking the tips of their weapons through to clear away the few sick civilians that helplessly trying to pound their way inside. "Clear out from the gate! New bodies coming in!" A large bearded guard wearing a distinguished helmet shouts as the gates slowly open. When the gate starts to rise one of the figures wrapped in bloody bandages rushes towards the guards and is immediately pinned to the ground by the guards. He thrashes around for a few seconds before going limp. "Someone tell one of the The Morbus Doctore that they can scrape that one up.." he grumbles as the other infected citizens back away from the gates.
A few seconds pass and a black iron carriage backs up to the gate, nearly filling the entire entrance to the city. Once there, the back of the carriage opens up and the inhabitants are prodded out with halberds through slits in the side of the carriage but the guards. "Alright! All of you out! Can't have you all infecting the rest of us!" The guard captain wearing shouts from the top of the gate. When the last of the people are out of the back, the steel bars lower as the gate is shut once more and the carriage disappears off into the city beyond.
As the group heads out, Nesyax notes the places selling various food items. "We'll have to ask Ren where he's been getting food. Those places look... suspicious." She also notes the potentially abandoned places and the former bakery. "Do we make a short tour of the area first then go back to places? Or take a look as we go?"
The scene at the gate also draws her interest as well. "Perhaps we'd be better off to move away from the gate if those are all infected people," she suggests.
"We can take the tables and chairs outside, and the tavern may have some intact beds. I do agree we should step away from the infected newcomers. Plus, we don't want to draw the ire of the guards." says Staysn as he pauses momentarily in front of the tavern.
He will wait to see what the other's say, but if there are no objections, he will head into the tavern to see what is available inside.
"Didn't he say they found food supplies in the temple when they arrived?"Vesna responds to Nesyax, her voice muffled by the long sleeve of her cloak, as she holds it close to her face while she gets accustomed to the stench of rot. Maybe she should have followed Kitaer's example and tried to make a mask or something too.
Her amber eyes warily study the chunks of fresh meat hanging at the butcher's shop. "You don't think it is..." she gulps. For some reason, with all the dead bodies around, her mind immediately makes the wrong association. Endless supplies of corpses, fresh meat... "Maybe Ren just relies on the crates... perhaps if we are lucky, that bakery would have supplies like flour or other stuff we can use to make bread or something..."

Vesna leans in a bit closer and examines the meats through the dirty window. She cannot tell exactly what is inside but she is pretty sure it isn't human. Some of the hanging meat is large enough that it could be from a person but as you look closer you notice it tapers down to a clawed foot. Other pieces of meat that you can see appear to be from some sort of bird maybe... but you cannot be sure.
OOC: also, Ren said that the food he has been eating was mostly food brought with him for now and some things he has scavenged from inside the church / HQ. You have gotten the impression that by the time he located a somewhat sturdy / safe building and moved everything inside, most of his free time has been networking and trying to find out more about this place since it is so much different than back home.
"Let's start with exploring the abandoned tavern to salvage what we can from it, particularly beds and furniture that could help make separate spaces in the main chamber of our base. When we get back we can ask Ren about his thoughts on food supply, then possibly visting the bakery for some salvageble foodstuffs and having a chat with the locals about the situation and this Bone Collector." Daryos says, nodding for Kitaer to take point as they enter the abandoned tavern. "Be careful inside now, the place looks like it could collapse."
OOC: If anyone chooses not to enter the building that is fine
As the group turns their attention to the tavern, they notice a hanging wooden sign swaying gently in the breeze just above the open doorway. "The Wet Weasel" is etched into the wood with a painted picture of what you assume to be a weasel holding a large mug of ale in front of it with its tiny paws. stepping through the doorway and over the splintered door, you see a massive pile of rubble standing in the center of the room. Sunlight shines down from the ceiling through the massive hole in the roof like a spotlight on the debris in the center of the room. Underneath the pile of rubble you see remains of tables and chairs where townsfolk once enjoyed many meals. The pile of debris containing splintered wooden beams, clay shingles, and remains of light fixtures rises up to the second story balcony that encircles the main drinking room of the tavern. On the left side of the room you see stairs that lead upwards to the second story. Old dust covered lanterns line the walls, resting above some of intact tables that survived the collapse of the roof. On the far side of the room you can see what looks like a dirty bar and a collapsed stage.
OOC: Everyone roll me a perception check as they describe what they are doing.
"If nothing else, we should try to keep the area right around our place free of corpses," Kitaer suggests as they are exiting and see the seagulls take wing. "Couldn't hurt the local smell much either if we kept the decaying as far away as possible."
Seeing Vesna's interest in the meats and taking a bit of a guess at what she is wondering he says "Nahh. Least not in the window. Even if people have gotten that desperate they would hide the fact less they draw the ire of everyone not yet willing to go there. People don't take kindly to it if they think you may be eating their dearly departed. Might be best to avoid meat pies and ground beef though... Easier to hide extras when you can't recognize the cut."
Kitaer had intended on doing a full tour first before looking to loot or attain goods but he was a minotaur of the people and if the people wanted to inspect the dilapidated tavern then so be it! "We shouldn't be too eager to grab everything that may be useful until we know the area a bit more," Kitaer suggests. "The fact any in tact furniture still exists here suggests that rampant looting and such isn't fully condoned, is my guess. If it was a total free for all there'd be people grabbing some of this stuff just for firewood..." Kitaer doesn't really know this for sure but it's his best guess. If nothing else he figures a bunch of strangers grabbing handfuls of everything not nailed down could hurt their reputation even if it was "ok."
Heading into the Wet Weasel the minotaur heads first, of course, behind the bar. He can't imagine there is anything drinkable left but miracles happen and bottles get overlooked?
"You make a good point Kitaer. While I do think we should salvage what we want from this place, let's not bring things over to the base before being fairly sure there are not better things in the next house. If we find decent beds upstairs I suggest we take some of those though."The young white-haired suggests as they enter the dilapidated tavern. Once inside he has the same thought as the minotaur it seems, curious to see if there is anything worth salvaging behind the bar.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Yes, that's probably right... but I did once read a book, about this barber, who... Never mind, actually," Vesna responds to Kitaer, not really wanting to delve into pies and their different fillings, besides, the rest were already headed towards the tavern, so she hurried after them, not wanting to stay alone by herself.
As she follows the rest of the group into the building, the cleric's hand reaches rests on the spot, beneath which her amulet lays hidden, while she takes in the sight. "Selûne , guide me... Oh... what happened here?" she murmurs as she looks around. She's only been to a real tavern once in her life when she had to deliver a letter from her priestess to an innkeeper for some reason, but in her mind, she can almost imagine what this place must have looked like before - the patrons, the music, the singer, a busy hostess carrying tankards and plates with delicious food... Amidst this whole destruction, the thought leaves her with a sense of melancholy.
The big hole in the roof makes her wonder how safe it is to be in here, but she tries to focus on not finding immediate causes for panic. Instead, she tries to see if there is anything interesting to be spotted around the rubble (carefully making her way, so she doesn't get a fallen shingle on her head) and on the right side near the entrance.

Nesyax goes in, walking to the left. She glances up the stairs quickly to see if she can glimpse anything there. Then inspecting the tables, chairs, and lanterns. "We could probably use these. But Kitaer is right, we can come back for them." She then moves over to take a look at the stage. "A shame this has collapsed. Maybe we could have moved it," she suggest. "But what's this?" she asks as she glimpses what looks like steps heading downward.
OOC: I know I don't have anything from Staysn yet and that is OK, I am just going to narrate what was found so far by the team.
As the group enters the building, they spread out as the explore the ruined tavern. With each step the dirty floorboards creak and moan under the weight of the party. You get the impression that with the floorboards may have been weakened over time due to being exposed to the elements coming through the open roof... and the massive amount of weight piled in the center of the room...
Kitaer and Daryos head around the right side of the rubble before making their way straight back towards the bar to look for anything useful left behind. The bar is made of rich mahogany hidden beneath a thick layer of dust, cobwebs, and rat droppings. Old abandoned mugs lay scattered across the bar and the surrounding floor. Behind the bar there is a large crooked oil painting of a weasel wearing a sea shell bikini sitting laying on a beach holding a mug of ale in each hand. Below the painting stands a wide short shelf with six kegs spread out across the top. Each one representing a different drink that had once been on tap. Below the kegs on the mostly empty shelves, you find many empty and broken bottles of ale and mead. Turning around looking under the bar itself reveals layers of dust, extra glasses and mugs, and mounds of chewed cloth that you think may have been cloth napkins and table cloths at one point.
Kitaer:
When looking behind the bar, you check the taps on the kegs and most are dry. Once releases a foul smelling liquid that you are fairly certain would not be wise to drink. As you quickly move through the various bottles and mugs laying around, pull out the pile of ruined cloth and send rats scattering across the floor. Under the cloth you find two unopened and very dirty looking bottles of mead that you think you could clean up and sell for at least 1gp
Daryos:
Daryos moves behind the bar as well. With the minotaur checking the kegs and bottles laying around, you focus your attention elsewhere. As you look closely at the back of the bar, your eye catches a set of seams in the wood. As your trace your fingers along the fine lines in the wood, you spot what appears to be a knot in the wood edge of the wood facing the back of the bar. Looking closely at the knot... you realize that it is actually a button of some kind.
Nesyax heads off to the left, glancing upwards before passing tables, chairs, and the ruined stage. Upon noticing a set of stairs heading downwards, she stops to take a look...
Nesyax:
Nesyax glances up the stairs but is unable to see much without actually going upwards. A few paintings line the wooden walls of the stairwell and dirt and rubble cover the steps. As you continue to move around the pile of debris, you spot a couple smaller rats and one slightly larger one scurry around under the floorboards of the collapsed stage. They appear to be fleeing from the sound of your footsteps and don't appear to be a threat. As you make your way to the stairs heading down, you cannot make out much. The stairs appear to spiral downward and lead to a basement of some kind. Your dark vision helps to to see farther down the stairs but because of how it twists you cannot see much without going downstairs.
Vesna moves slightly to the right side of the pile of rubble in the center of the room before stopping to try look for anything of use buried underneath the mountain of wood and debris....
Vesna:
Vesna move close to the debris pile and begins looking it over to the best of her abilities. The wood creaks loudly and flexes a small amount as she steps close to the heavy mound of rubble, but she doesn't really notice as she focuses on examining the pile. As she leans in close a slight breeze blows through the open front door, kicking up dust and old droppings that float into her eyes and cause them to water.
Keeping an eye on the progress of the others in the team, the young white-haired noble starts to investigate the back of the bar, finding some kind of hidden button there. Expecting the button to open some kind of secret compartment, Daryos pushes it.
Daryos presses the button on the bar. A faint click is heard as a panel below the button drops down and swings open. Inside the compartment are a hooks with numbers above them labeled 1 through 11. Some of the hooks have simple brass keys hanging from them while others are empty. The Key hanging from the hook numbered "8" is slightly larger and appears to be made of silver. Also inside the compartment is a small bag containing 10gp, 25sp, and 20 small balls. A horn with a leather strap lays next to the bag. Other than the bag, horn, and keys, the only other item inside the compartment of any value is a well made metal tube of some kind with a lever on the top and bottom. It also appears to have a smooth wooden handle with a golden decorative inlay.
OOC: Not sure if any of you have ever seen any firearms or not... but this is actually a pistol and the metal canasters are Bullets, Renaissance.... and the horn is Gunpowder, Powder Horn but It is up to you to know if your character would know what they are since they are pretty rare back home.
Daryos follows, checking on his teammates as they all head out, keeping his eyes open for any threats as they leave their base.
