"I am uninjured Kitaer. Unfortunately, I have no skills opening locks. I wonder what that key unlocks." He then looks in on the remains and investigates the corpse.
loud clank echoes through the basement. Kitaer's hoof slams into the door... a blow that would normally splinter a wooden door, but the sturdy metal door in front of the minotaur remains intact.
Daryos moves with Vesna to investigate the kitchen. He is able to assists with moving some of the pots and pans covering the remains inside the kitchen. He can see that this was likely a gnome or halfling woman as well. The remains have been picked over by any rats and other scavengers that had come across it here in the dark. As the two of them work together, Daryos spots a golden ring on the left hand of the corpse.
Vesna examines the remains, getting a better look at the what is left of the body as the cooking tools are moved away. She notices the ring on the womans left hand, but she also spots what appears to be a fairly large key clutched tightly in womans skeletal left hand. The right hand is positioned under the corpse so that it is harder to see than the womans left hand.
Stasyn follows into the kitchen and looks over the shoulder of Vesna and Daryos as they crouch down nearby... guiding the spectral hand and carefully checking out the body. Not only does the Verdan notice the ring and the key, his eyes are able to quickly spot a fine engraving on the simple golden ring. Even through the dark, he is able to read that it says "To my angel Tia"
Vesna winces as the loud bang echoes through the building and for a moment she looks around startled, before realising the sound must have something to do with the steel floor. And judging by the lack of screaming, yelling and other signs of distress, it doesn't appear that they are under another attack, at least for now.
Turning her attention back to the corpse, she carefully attempts to untangle the key from the bony fingers, feeling suddenly grateful to have gauntlets on. While working on it, she notices the ring and thinks to herself Doesn't matter how good life was, I suppose... in the end, each of us can end up to be rat food.
If she manages to take it, she would try and see if it fits the lock for the steel door.

As the loud bang reaches the kitchen, the young white-haired noble is startled but quickly realizes what just had happened. Daryos had been prepared for battling monsters with the team, but he found himself feeling slightly uneasy with looting what was likely a thriving tavern before the plague struck. He was above all a practical man though so he decided to take care of what they could find while also making a mental note of what was taken if there should turn up anyone making claims on these items. As Vesna discovers a key hidden in the corpse's hand, Daryos uses his spectral hand to take the ring, letting it float up to him to be cleaned before letting it float with him back out to the team's hoardsperson for safekeeping.
(Using Presidigitation to clean ring before turning it over to the care of Kitaer :-)
Taking the key, she inserts it into the steel door and gives it a turn. It takes a bit of effort to turn the key, but it eventually rotates within the lock and a loud "thunk" and "click" are heard within the lock.

"Excellent work Ms. March, let's see what warrants a heavy steel door to protect it."Daryos says with a hint of excitement in his voice, motioning for the others in the team to be ready for whatever is in there, letting his spectral hand slowly slide the door open while standing back.
As the door opens, you are greeted by a pitch black room. As a torch is brought over, an ornate office is revealed before you. A very finely crafted mahogany desk stands in the center of room. On the top of the desk are stacks of paper and a worn leather bound journal. Looking to your left and to your right are marble pedestals with silver statues on top. One is of a weasel holding a mug of ale while the other one is a weasel holding a gold coin....
Nesyax scanned the room once the battle had ended. Everyone seems to scatter to their own things, so she stays put, checking her injuries. The spider swarm had actually nearly knocked her out, so she chants a few magic words, and makes a motion with her hand to cast Cure Wounds on herself. (Heals 5 hp) Almost back to full strength, she heads over to where it seems the group is now opening up the heavy metal door. She keeps back, seeing what they find.
Noticing Nesyax using her magic to heal herself, Daryos feels quite inattentive to her critical condition, giving the blue-haired woman an apologetic look. "I hope you feel okay to go on exploring a bit Ms. Sanaldi, I can't imagine how it would be being swarmed by spiders like that." He says with an empathic smile, gently brushing off a dead spider from her shoulder before returning his attention to the room beyond the heavy steel door, letting the spectral hand open the door fully before holding forth his torch to cast some light on the situation.
(Did Nesyax take into account the 4 temp hp provided earlier? :-)
Kitaer is interested in the new room... Until it seems to be nothing but an office. Once that is revealed he's more than happy to let others inspect and search the place. They would likely know better than him what papers might be worthwhile or not anyway. Though if they don't look to be taking the statues he most definitely will. That'll be after they search though, he's not getting handsy yet...
OOC: Sorry about the previous post, continuing now!
A worn leather desk chair sits behind the desk. By the looks of it, you can assume that many hours had been spent in that chair over the years. A little farther into the room, on the left is a well made wooden chest with no apparent lock. On the right side of the room stand two wooden shelves. The one of the shelves contains many wine bottles stacked neatly in rows. The other shelf looks as though it had been repurposed. Instead of having bottles of fine wine, it is instead piled up with folded clothing and basic supplies. Against the back wall stands a bed that looks as though it were hastily moved down here to the basement. Next to the bed stands a large iron combination safe. A dial with a large wheel is affixed to the heavy door of the safe.
The walls of the room contain a number of paintings of weasels holding mugs of ale... one is sitting on a bench while another is in a garden scene. There is one painting however that is different. Above the bed on the back wall of the office stands a large oil painting of two halfings. A beautiful female halfing with long golden hair wearing the same dress as you found on the corpse in the kitchen stands next to a handsome halfling wearing a brown suit with a green bowtie.
You get the impression that two people may have been trying to live down here in this office based upon the men and womens halfling sized clothes piled on the shelves and the two pillows that lay side by side on the bed.
Moving into the dark room past the desk, you are greeted by a corpse in the middle of the floor... The corpse has been here for a while and is badly decomposed but has been left untouched by any vermin or other scavengers. The corpse is wearing a brown suit and appears to be a halfling. Next to the halfling is a small vial with what looks to be a dried green residue in the bottom.

After taking a quick look around the unlocked room, Vesna feels an unexpected wave of empathy as she stares up at the portrait of the two halflings. "They were trying to make something with those alchemist supplies there... A poison? Did the husband kill himself? And then the wife locked him so his body wouldn't be disturbed?"The cleric turns to look at the corpse. "Or did she give him a poison and then locked him hear to die? Was it a tragedy or a murder whatever happened here," she wonders aloud, as she reaches forward to pick up the vial and check it out properly, mostly to see whether there would be enough substance to try and test it later. Afterwards, she carefully examines the body for any potential signs of what may have happened.

The young white-haired noble follows Vesna into the vault, his eyes immediately drawn to the many bottles of wine but as the cleric airs her thoughts about the most likely tragic history of this place he nods solemnly. "I would think whatever exactly took place here was a result of the plague so be careful with what you touch Ms. March. I believe the couple had moved down here to protect themselves from the plague, but then one of them caught it and they decided to separate, but eventually the husband decided to end his life with the poison in his hand." He says softly, trying to assist in the investigation of the corpse by using the spectral hand when things needs to be moved. When finished he would move over to the large iron combinaton safe to see if he an find any clues on how to open it.
ooc: what is Vesna applying the investigation check towards exactly?
Vesna examines the decaying body and the vial. As she looks them both over, she doesn't see any visible wounds on the body. You are pretty sure that the vial used to contain some kind of powerful poison.
Daryos moves to the safe. it is a thick heavy iron safe that appears to have been very well made. It looks geavy enough that you are not sure how it was ever brought down here. The dial on the front of the safe has many numbers engraved across its surface. there are no holes or visible ways to access any of the mechanical bits of the door from the outside. Near the dial is a large wheel that you assume you turn and pull to open the door once it is unlocked. From what you can tell... you are going to either need the proper number combination or some other way to destroy or manipulate heavy iron.
After feeling confident that she knows what killed the halfling, she glances around the room. Even in the darkness, it is easy to see much of value.... but the journal on the desk catches her eye the most. Picking it up and undoing the leather strap, you quickly flip through the pages. It isn't easy to read in the poor lighting, but you can tell that it was written by Wes Weaselton. the earliest pages date back many years and starts by talking about how he and his new wife were going to start the Wet Weasel. Closer to the end it talks about the beginning of the weeping pox and the quarantine. The last dozen pages talk about how they were working to try to find a cure for the weeping pox and how they feared that The Morbus Doctore would try to stop them....
the last page of the journal is stained with what appears to be drops of water and reads... "Since crushing us under the roof didn't kill us, they finally did it... they attacked in the night. Tia... She pushed me inside and said that she would lure then away... I... fear she is dead...
I know she is gone... it has been too long. I cannot bring myself to look for her because I want to remember her as she was. She had hoped to be the one to save us from the plague... to be a guiding light for all those in need... but that light is extinguished now. I don't want to live in this darkness any longer... I will Be with my Tia once more.. once more I will bask in the warm glow of her gentle heart..."
That was the last entry in the journal.
As you turn away from the journal and look around the room, you notice a small wooden sign above the door that simply says... "Never trust your fortune to a drunk weasel."
With everyone looking about the room, Nesyax just stays near the entrance, investigating the statues flanking the door. She takes a close look to see if there's anything interesting about them. (Investigation: 2)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"We need a combination of numbers to open this." The young white-haired noble says to the others as he finishes his investigation of the safe, turning his attention to the paintings on the walls, remembering the combination to his father safe was hidden in one of the paintings in his office. Assuming he also notices or is made aware of the small wooden sign by the door he would pay sepcial attention to any drunken weasels in the paintings. He is yet blissfully unaware of the tragic words of the journal.
Stasyn opens the nice looking chest. It is fairly simple but well made. Inside he finds a healing potion, a vial of holy water, and another vial of poison that looks very much like the one Vesna was investigating near the body of Mr. Weaselton. He also finds a hand crossbow and 20 bolts. Under the items in the chest, a couple sets of halfling sized travelers clothes lay in the bottom of the trunk.
Nesyax examines the two statues. They both appear to be very well made and could fetch a decent price. She assumes that both the statue of the weasel with the ale and the statue of the weasel with the coin were both made by the same craftsman but she doesn't notice anything of interest about them....
Daryos looks around the room... taking note of all the different depictions of weasels. Each of the weasel paintings in the room depict them holding mugs of ale. Thinking back, every painting you have come across of a weasel has depicted them holding a mug of ale up to this point. When leaning in close to the paintings, he doesn't see any numbers on either side of the paintings or hiding within the pictures.
