Fazil moved closer to get in range, stopping right behind Thuribula just 10 feet apart. Then, he began waving his wand to cast Mold Earth right behind the shadow to block one of its escape routes by creating a 5ft pillar behind it.
Thuribula feels her mace struggle to find purchase (2 damage) however at the radiance.. It shrieks falling back showing it's first form of any "Fear." It turns it's head from Jordgubb to her now. (8 Damage it was weak to radiance.)
The shadows north route and route behind it blocked. It could flee south still, however it looked more interested in striking back at Thuribula!
Maggwyn heads back to close the gap a bit between herself and the remaining shadow, going a bit south to go beyond the pillar and then throws a dart at the shadow. Frustrated that nothing she can do can really do a good amount of damage, she still wasn't going to at least try.
"In the name of the Light, begone with you!"Thuribula shouts as the shadow shrieks and recoils, elated to see that the radiance of magical ability the Sacred Flame planted in her soul is able to stand so effectively against these dark creatures. And she feels another spike of gratitude for Rikard's armor as she brings her shield up to deflect the horrific claws lashing out at her, thrusting them away from her. "Come to me, foul fiend of darkness. Come again and be judged by the Light!"
Once again, a tiny soot-colored streak flaps past what passes for the shadow's face as Xarian's owl Ash takes the help and wings away and up (Flyby) just after Maggwyn's dart strikes home and Fazil raises the earthen mound.
Xarian gestures awkwardly and imbues his maul with booming blue energy once more and heaves it around at the remaining shadow, but he does, he is visibly startled by the Flamekeeper's zealous shouts. He manages to land a hit, but being off-balance, his full strength is not behind it.
I like her. And yet... is this actually a fiend we are fighting? Be judged? In some ways, she scares me almost as much as this entire forsaken place.
Action: Xarian attacks clawed shadow (2) using Booming Blade with his maul, with advantage thanks to Ash'shelp: Maul to hit: 23 Maul damage: 7 bludgeoning (so 3 when halved) Forced Movement due to Crusher feat: clawed shadow(2) slammed 5' southwest, ending up to the south of the earthen mound (moved on Roll20). Booming Blade secondary damage: 1 thunder (so 0 when halved) if the shadow moves voluntarily.
Movement: Xarian circles to help the group surround the target, SE-->SW-->SW (moved on Roll20), ending up just southeast of the shadow.
"I wonder who these were," the big man mumbles morosely. "Common folk, could be, slain in the city fifteen years ago or since, left to lurk and haunt it."
Xarian sets his stance once more, hoping his companions can finish the shadowy undead remnant before one of its claws can strike home.
Shadows of the dark.. cursed by the light but.. Xarian wonders exactly what they were before? The lives that now haunt these city streets? Maggwyn and him continue to press on and attack!
OOC I think that 1 damage halved is still 1 actually I don't think it can reduce to 0 even though ya normally round down in DnD.
Thurbula and Jordgubb and Fazil may all make attacks now!
Thuribula rushes forward as Fazil prepares another bolt.
"We've got this ser!"
His books cries out as her hammer slams into the shadow. The physical aspect is partially repelled but her divine light burst through the shadow before it completely disperses. Than... all finds silent. Falling to the ground from the final shadow... two delirium fragments. It isn't the haul they heard of to be sure.. but it wasn't nothing to snuff out.
They appeared to make powerful spell components and worthy pieces to sell.
Jordgubb wipes the green poison residue from his chin and slams his staff into the ground causing the fungal growth and decay to slough off and fall to the ground in a cloud of nasty looking spores which drift away harmlessly on the breeze. "Well that sorted them out, and they didn't even leave nothin' tasty behind. Rude... You all wanted showin' to them haze husks an that pretty shard hm? I'll take one o' these as payment in the forehand" he says as he quickly and greedily swoops down to a knee to swipe one of the fallen delirium fragments.
Xarian steps back, stows his maul, and surveys the scene. His owl, Ash, also flies up briefly to check for further threats nearby before returning.
The big man makes no move to stop Jordgubb as the somewhat toxic-looking dragonborn grabs one of the two delirium fragments... with his bare hands?
His voice is quiet, almost pensive. As if he is trying to piece something together and coming up short time and again.
"What are you planning to do with the delirium, Jordgubb? I only just met you, so it might be that you won't answer. I understand that. Maggwyn wouldn't either and I've known her oh, a good three minutes longer than I've known you. Lifetime buddies, practically." Xarian's grin is rueful.
"I think I know what m'lady Flamekeeper would do with it, and I see her point of view. And I know what I would do with it too, in principle at least. It needs to be studied, whether we intend to use it or destroy it, I do not understand how best to do either one of those yet, or if we even can safely. There is only one group of people best suited to find out." He points to the purple patch sewn onto his threadbare cloak. "The Amethyst Academy. And yet..."
His gazes shifts back to the broad view of the fallen city. "And yet, this rock. Delirium. Just look... look what it's done... It is not just a shiny gem for trade. It is something much deeper. Volatile. Dangerous. Maybe the most dangerous thing I've ever heard of. I do not think any of us should even touch it unprotected, though..." Xarian peers at the dragonborn again. "Maybe you can do it safely? That in itself is interesting."
The big man looks uncertainly to Fazil for support.
Relieved as the shadow dissipates under the judgment of the Divine radiance, Thuribula stops, letting her hammer drop, slowly, though she keeps her shield up for a few moments more, looking around to make sure there aren't any more threats. Reflexively, she steps back away from the purple delerium shards as they tumble out of the shadow's remains, making no move to prevent Jordgubb from snatching one of them up. Poor desperate creature, she thinks, feeling a little tense at watching him grab the crystal with his bare hands.
Almost thoughtfully, she looks over at Xarian, as he starts to verbalize a long and winding train of thought about the delerium. She is suprised for a moment---quite the philosopher, this one---but ends up smiling in relief at what his words are expressing. "Few who have seen the effects of this rock would say that it isn't dangerous,"she says. "Our friend Dabbert had a deep conviction of the seriousness of this scourge, and though we both recognized how limited our knowledge really is, we felt deeply the duty to find out what we could do to halt its curse. This delerium and all it begets is cursed by the Light, yet this challenge has come to us, and we must take it up with fortitude. Let us start from the correct principles, that we may not be seduced by the allure of gold or power... let us do what is right."She replaces her warhammer at her hip. "All I know is that it will not be easily done alone."
The Flamekeeper looks more curiously at Xarian. "Do you see research as the best way forward with the delerium? Are you collecting samples for the Academy for study?" And, looking around at the others, she smiles warmly. "Good job, everyone. Not one of you took a scratch from those wicked looking claws, and for that I am grateful."
Xarian turns back from Fazil to Thuribula as she speaks. His wide child-like hazel eyes glaze over a bit as she begins speaking of 'cursed by the Light.'
"Truth is m'Lady, ah... I don't know what the best way forward is with delerium. Yet, my best guess, not knowing, is that yes. Research is, ah... probably the right way to go." If we can trust the researchers to appreciate the danger and not be blinded by ambition, Xarian thinks, but does not say.
"Every Academy mage, even ones who are, ah... barely considered a mage, like me... every one of us supposed to bring back any samples they happen to find and can transport safely so they can be studied. If any of you are bent on selling it, not that I recommend the trade, but if you are - the Academy is probably the best buyer. Unless maybe you want... more and more of, ah...all this around the world." He gestures to the fallen city helplessly.
"Not that... not that I am going to try to take or buy from any of you what you consider your, ah... share? I'm not a buyer. And no, collecting delerium is not why they sent me, m'lady. Begging pardon, but I did tell you I'm not supposed to say why I'm here, and you did tell me you wouldn't pry."
Xarian has resumed his customary slouch, looking rather uncomfortable. The big man waits another few moments for Fazil (or anyone) to chime in.
If hearing nothing, he ventures. "On to these Haze Husks, then?" Perched upon his shoulder, the owl, Ash emits a small, apprehensive sounding "hoo."
Fazil recalls what was warned to him before Jordbugg grabs the fragment. They need gloves to grab them or heavy cloth if he touches it with his bare hands that could be rather dangerous.
(This can give Jord a chance to not grab it with his bare hands if Fazil says something)
Jord looks confused a Fazil but then with realisation finds and empties the contents of a tinderbox into one of his foul smelling pockets, he then uses the metal container to scoop up his prize.

If hearing nothing, he ventures. "On to these Haze Husks, then?" Perched upon his shoulder, the owl, Ash emits a small, apprehensive sounding "hoo."
"What Xarian said is correct. There are two here, which means out of two, that might take it for whatever reason; the rest of us will have to continue to find more or come back here next time to pick up the next ones, depending on how many. Those that didn't take it now would have first dibs. Another option for the entire party is to sell both to the academy for golds, which we really need to buy better gear. Allowing us to have better tools in case we come across a larger amount of Delerium."
It seems the fate of the second delerium crystal is yet to be decided. Thuribula nods, in response to Xarian not wanting to collect it. The thought comes to her, Wouldn't it be easier just to take this one, and return to the Silver Order with it, not to go any farther into the city. But she rejects the thought nearly as soon as it appears. She does not want to leave all these poor folk alone in the ruins, especially not after seeing how resistant the shadows were to everything except the Divine radiance that the Light has blessed her with.
"I'm not convinced that the Academy is interested in containing this threat, rather than magically profiting from it,"she says, to Xarian. For one who is so guarded about his own mission---the Academy keeps far too many secrets for me to trust their intentions---he certainly is very interested in what the rest of us want to do with the stuff. She then turns to Fazil as he speaks. "I am not interested in these crystals, except to have one to return to the Silver Order that I will destroy as a token. Gold is an indifferent friend at best, and I would rather have the association of those I can trust and help our common goals in service to the Light. But, whoever picks up these pieces," and she gestures to Jordgubb and his tinderbox, as well as the remaining crystal unclaimed on the ground, "I want to make sure that we all get back out of these ruins safely. If that means we stay here until we find enough of these to satisfy everyone's desire, that is all right. This city is a wasteland, and I have heard terrible tales and seen terrible things, but this is the first time I have set foot in it, and it is my time to learn, now, of what the danger really consists."
Thuribula hefts her shield with a sigh. "If it is to the haze husks and the fate of Jordgubb's party that we are heading to, let us go... and may Saint Arwenna and Saint Tarna preserve us."She bows her head. O Sacred Light, give me the strength to protect these lost ones, and help us all to see the truth of this terrible curse, and perhaps even more importantly, what action we should take in response to it.She wishes that Dabbert had not left, but feels the weight of his duty of looking after the others, at least until they are all out of the city and back in a safe place.
"my party!?" Jordgubb cocks a head confused "nahhh my party is safely tucked away where they can't do anyone any damage, the ones what aren't dead anyways, parties have a tendency of doin' that around me... I'm just int'rested in gettin' some clues for a cure, and youse seem like capable sorts. Cmon I'll show ya where the big'un is"
