As korbina touches Gregory he grabs her arm his eyes full of fear still partially asleep. He wakes up quickly releasing her and mumbling "sorry, bad dream" he stands stretching and yawning.

Quartz wakes to find himself still in the mist-enshrouded forest, a far cry from the dreams of home from which he awakens. The trees here are all different species than those he's accustomed to, and the mysterious mists hanging in the air lend a chilly aspect to the forest, displacing the welcoming warmth of the familiar woods with an ominous sense of dread.
As the party readies itself to leave, a question comes to mind of how best to traverse this perilous veil. Clearly, this mist has an unknown property that makes it dangerous to penetrate its depths unprepared.
Meanwhile Thaux, the weary hunter that he is, scans the edge of the clearing for a path or opening from which to disembark. As he does, he finds something hidden in the brush... a sign?
As KorbiƱa is packing up, chewing on a strip of jerkey, she holds the waterlogged compass that she had found among the captain's belongings, scratching one of her horns...
She looks at it from all sides, taking a dagger to poke at nooks and dents in hopes to somehow get rid of the water inside...
Thaux looks to the brush as he draws out both of his shortswords and slowly approaches the area. [I'm going to take the ready action, in case anything jumps out] Thaux looks back to the rest of the group and then says in a hushed tone, "Something amiss in brush, follow."

Sensing nothing of significant threat, Thaux further approaches the object. It is indeed a sign, or signpost to be precise. It appears old, very old. There's something written on it, but it's not a language he recognizes... Maybe one of the others might...?
With a groan of embarrassment, KorbiƱa realizes why she can't open the old compass: it's not waterlogged, it's a naval suspension compass. The "water" is sealed inside to prevent the delicate needle from sticking. She's even seen one before in her travels. How could she forget?
But then, compasses point north, or they're supposed to. But this one is pointing Northeast. Is it broken or--?
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
KorbiƱa looks up and puts the compass away "at least he have a way of keeping our direction in the mist" she explains to the world at large with a smile
"So what do you have here... oh... writing on an old stone... let me see..."

Nature: 5
Arcana: 13
Religion: 11
[The three checks are for Quartz to choose.]
KorbiƱa recognizes the Draconic dialect: it's an old style commonly used in Dragonborn tribes centuries past. Asher may recognize it, too, but by its history, it makes sense why Thaux wouldn't know. It's difficult to discern fully, but it seems to indicate a "safe ground" nearby.
I read on an earlier post or forum or whatever that players were āfree to come and go as they pleaseā which is really perfect for me. Please tell me this is open, Iāve been looking for a good adventure for a while now! I understand if recruitment is over though. Thanks guys

While he can't discern the meaning of the text, something about them hints at an elvish origin. His familiarity with the culture of elves, with whom his tribe shares the forested region he calls home, let's him recall something of the tales of a cient elven rituals concerning such monoliths.

[Surely those who experienced the mist's worst effects have some idea of what might work.]

[Intelligence Check]
Sensing nothing of significant threat, Thaux further approaches the object. It is indeed a sign, or signpost to be precise. It appears old, very old. There's something written on it, but it's not a language he recognizes... Maybe one of the others might...?
Thaux cocks his head towards the odd sign and then looks back and shouts out, "Horned purple! I not read, help."
Quartz will give the sign a look (just in case it's druidic, elvish, giant, or ogre.)
[It isn't, but--]
Despite not recognizing the language, Quartz does notice one of three things (choose one to check):
1. The signpost appears to be older than the language scrawled on it. [Nature Check]
2. The stone itself appears important in its own right. He senses something magical in its essence. [Arcana Check]
3. He recalls the use of such stones in old elven rituals. [Religion Check]
KorbiƱa's intelligence check: 10

Thaux's call breaks her from her introspection.
Lelantus walks over to inspect the sign in hopes it's written in halfling

"Hummm... it's a kind of trail sign... I believe from dragonborn ... it says that there's a safe ground nearby... but..."
KorbiƱa looks closer for a kind of direction that might be indicated...
"Asher? Maybe you should take a look at this."
