"Well I don't think we'll be able to hide the fact we are here if someone comes looking, that door is almost off already" Esano says pointing at the only regular exit from the room into the rest of the house "and I think we should at least see what is in the next room." He moves towards the door, as quietly as possible ( stealth 18 ) and then looks through the crack in the door where it is coming away from the frame, or opens it a crack if necessary ( perception 7 )
Edit: hmmm, that went well }:(
Using the help from Nillis I'll roll again - obviously I can't do worse than the 1 so this will be the advantage roll - if the DM doesn't agree then disregard and I will edit my post accordingly.
Perception 24
"Thanks Nillis, that was surprisingly helpful advice".
I'm afraid there is no logical way that Nillis would be able to "help" Esano on his Perception check. We will have to go with the first roll. :)
The room is, if possible, darker than the kitchen (I am assuming Esano does not have darkvision). Esano cannot make out anything distinct.
"Can any of you that can see in the dark take a look? - I can barely see in front of my face in there!" He turns back to the group "If our friend from earlier is in there he is a very creepy person though - it is pitch black in there - he must be in a different part of the house."

Penumbra uses a piece of the broken chair to clear the cobwebs from the fireplace.
"Lighting a fire in an old fireplace like this could be dangerous, if the chimney is obstructed it could start the house on fire or just suffocate anyone in the room." She says as she removes her tinderbox and a hooded lantern from her bag. Using the flint and steel from the tinderbox she lights her lantern and uses it to peer up the chimney and inspect it for obstructions. perception24
she has darkvision, but that is only in greyscale and she wants to see very clearly to be absolutely sure that its safe to burn a fire in there.
"Hmm... a scary little raven staring into the woods? You would think it would be watching the group of strange new people arrive. I wonder what it was looking at." Penumbra thinks aloud as she peers into the chimney.
"I can see in the dark. Let me give it a look." Nillis steps forward and looks through the cracks. Perception: 9
Nillis can make out a few odd articles of furniture: a table, chairs, and an antique clock. All of the furniture is covered in moth-eaten white sheets and a thin layer of dust.

More cobwebs clog the chimney, but there is no major obstruction that Penumbra can see.
Penumbra puts her lantern out and replaces it in her pack. "Well, the chimney looks ok, but I still do not think a fire is a very good idea."
She stands back up and walks over to Nillis and Esano. "I do not like the idea of sleeping in this kitchen and as long as the storm keeps up I see nothing better to do than explore a little. I heard a clock chime a moment ago, someone has been keeping the mainspring wound, perhaps they have been maintaining a different wing of the building. Whatever the case it is likely to be less drafty in the rooms without a door to the outside."
Penumbra will examine the door to see if it looks like anyone has passed through it recently. investigation4
The oppressive darkness and dampness begins to weigh on your spirits, even those accustomed to the dark, such as Walter. The world is dead outside, save for the rain and the sleet.
"Aye fellows. I do not like it at all. We need some light"
Walter takes of his backpack and takes out lantern and his old tinderbox. After lighting it (lantern) he will move around the room looking for any strange signs on the walls.
Perception: 22
Next he will move to the doors "Let's check the house then"
The house has no strange symbols or runes, unless you count water stains and peeling plaster. The mansion itself is nothing out of the ordinary; it is the sinister mood in the air you breathe that makes you wary.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Walter opens the doors and allows Penumbra to go first. Then he moves and through and tries to lighten as much as possible. With low voice "What do we have.."

Wood litters the kitchen, but it is damp and hardly ideal for a fire.
