(That turned out to be far more dramatic than it appears. Glynt was down to one hp before he skewered the giant rat, killing it. This would be the time when Glynt could take a Short Rest and save the spells. Glynt's healing spell is best when someone is in trouble during combat. But with only two slots, you want to be sparing with them.)
PORTIAwill determine that there is a mechanical lock and something else on this door. Something possibly magical about the lock. She is unable to pick the mechanical lock. And she will correctly surmise that this door has not been opened in a very long time. And it is likely the only way past this lock is with the key.
(OOC-Yeah, you did. And then Glynt was eaten up by a Giant Rat taking him down to 1 HP. The Short Rest would allow Glynt to heal up some without using spells. Glynt will not be eligible for another Short Rest. Of course, you can use spells if you prefer. But this location is good spot for a breather.)
"I'm just going to sit down here for a minute and catch my breath". and I will bandage my wounds and use a hit dice to get myself back in some sort of shape.
(OOC - I rolled the Short Rest in the Character Sheet App, rolled a 5, +1 for Con so I am now up to 7HP).
"This is the most complex lock I have ever seen. It possibly is enhanced with magic. We need the key to get through this door. Or maybe some magic of our own to counter it"
After GLYNT’s short rest, the party determined that they were unable to move further in this direction without a key. So, the party went to the northerly door off the circular area. PORTIA had already determined that this was the most well-traveled door, and it was not trapped. XANTH opens the door and sees a monty hallway.
The tracks, mostly goblin, but also more faint larger humanoid tracks, go to the door straight back. Because the tracks are old on top of each other, it is impossible to determine exact numbers.
Int 8-1= 7
swing with warhammer 13+4=17 to hit and 2+2= 4 damage

The scurrying RAT finds Gnome flesh particularly tasty. ATT 18 DMG 4
GLYNT pulls out his rapier and skewers the rodent right through the heart. It dies instantly.
(Wow! What a strike. That was quick. Now what do you do?)

Portia will go and investigate the door for traps, and finding none, will attempt to pick the lock.
Investigation: 21 (or 26 - nat 20 if advantage, though I rolled without assuming that Glynt might be taking a short rest and thereby not helping)
Thieves' tools check to pick the lock: 9 (rolled as sleight of hand on sheet as it is the same modifier assuming dex+prof)
After joining more my signature got out of hand so I am now a proud member of the extended signature club!! :)
Gjynt sit down take a breather. I though we agree to let the monsters attack me first. Xanth says with a smile.
When we are ready Xanth will open the door.

OOC - I'm confused, didn't we take just take a long rest before opening the door?
(yes. But a giant rat attacked and quite badly hurt Glynt)

(Moving things along.)

(map updated)
Glynt, having eventually learned his lesson, will let the others go in for a poke about first and remain at the back.
Xanth look for tracks.
Survival 10
The tracks, mostly goblin, but also more faint larger humanoid tracks, go to the door straight back. Because the tracks are old on top of each other, it is impossible to determine exact numbers.
following the others...
Portia also follows. And goes to check the the door for traps. (assuming advantage from someone helping, Investigation: 26, nat 20, otherwise a 9)

PORTIA does not find a trap on the door. It doesn't appear locked either .
"Do we want to go straight through the door that everyone else is going through? or should we check the other rooms first?"
"Part of me wonders if there is a reason no one is going in them. Some threat we are not aware of confined to those areas for example"
