Pisgah motions everyone back to the other room. He tries to silently close the door before telling everyone about the signing stopping. What do we want to do? Continue on with Jaya leading the talking?
"Hey, I am seriously all for jumping through an unstable magic portal even though our resident wizard doesn't know what it does or where it leads. I think if we try it it should all be as a group and only if we all agree to go. If we go, we should do it quick since the goblins stopped singing."
I go to listen at the closed door with the ear horn. Are the goblins coming? Perception roll of 24
Rico examines the archway carefully and is able to determine several things with certainty: The weave, which is what powers the magic here in Realmspace, must have been disrupted at this portal a long time ago, remaining as a sort of wild magic residue. According to copious studies of arcane practitioners and historians the worlds over, this planet once suffered from an large scale event called the Spellplague. This event was responsible for wiping out functioning magic on a massive scale, leaving behind either no weave or a disrupted jumble of weave. This portal fits the pattern of just such magic. Now it is highly unlikely to lead anywhere - wild magic has a tendency of producing random results that one can't rely on. One might spontaneously burst into flames, grow three inches or be polymorphed into a goldfish. Repairing this would be a large scale effort: the inks and precious stones to stabilize the energies alone would rack up a bill of around 500 gp, and those are the easy part. A scroll of teleport and one of teleportation circle would be needed for reference. Finally, an object containing concentrated arcane essence to jumpstart the portal back into action. Rico can only speculate as to the source of this, but it would either need to be from a very strong monster or a very rare magic item. All of this would need to be handled and integrated by a master of their craft over many (16) hours for it to yield results.
After a few minutes, Pisgah does indeed hear a couple of goblins approaching, chattering nervously among themselves and walking slowly. Pisgah is able to separate the footstep sounds: 4 goblins.
“Well, it sounds like fixing the arch is out of the question. Shall we move to the arch room and wait here for the goblins? Arch-fixer is as good a lie as any to be here for the goblins. Shunn wants the damn thing fixed!” Jaya says with a smirk.
After those who want to have gathered back in the arch room, it takes the goblins a goblins a few minutes to enter, as they start arguing at the door about who should enter first. For a moment it's quiet, but then one of them steps in.
Only one goblin enters proper, the other 3 have remained a cautious 10 feet behind him. As they are alert, there is no chance of surprising them. The one that has entered looks at those of you that are visible. His eyes widen in surprise and confusion.
"Wh... who are you?" Frantically thinking and seemingly remembering something, he follows this up with: “How many eyes does Xanathar have?” He looks about ready to run away and the same goes for the three behind him, but he takes a moment to wait for a response.
Jaya looks at the goblin, lets out a low growl and pauses with his hand just above the hilt of his sword.
Telepathically to the goblin:
“That is the old passphrase you fool. I will be sure to tell Shunn that you can’t be bothered to keep up with the latest security protocols… Unless you weren’t told on purpose because your no longer useful to the guild? Get in here and answer my questions and perhaps I will forget your transgressions.”
Intimidation: (rolled twice just in case as you gave me adv last time): 8, 20.
OOC: Also threw in a few big words so maybe confuse a goblin? 😊
To the mix of surprise and confusion on the goblins face, fear is being added. He is rigidly locked in place, terrified. He stammers: "P-pardon me, sire. I didn't know that it had already changed. It's hard to keep up with all these passphrases you see. So many!"
He looks back at the other three goblins and points with one finger to his head, "They're from the guild, get in here."
The others meekly enter, looking around with apprehension. In a half-oderly line, they wait. "W-What questions did you have, sires? We don't know much, swear!"
Suspecting that Jaya has put something into the goblins heads, Pisgah does his best to try and look like muscle or a bodyguard for Jaya and the rest of the party with his hands resting on weapons and a scowl on his face.
Jaya sends a quick telepathic message to each group member.
“They believe we are guild members; ask them any questions you have.” OOC: I can only use this on creatures I can see, so if Nikk is invisible, I wouldn't see him so he won't get this message.
He then turns to the goblin and slowly moves his hand away from his sword…
“We were on our way to see Shunn and heard singing, what was that about? And tell me everything you know about this archway. And I mean everything or I'll know!” Jaya points to his head, mimicking what the goblin did to his buddies.
The goblins are squirming a bit, but they answer quickly enough.
"Oh, the dancing is just goblin custom. We was celebratin' with Nimraith. Y'know, one's got to have some fun now and then, when we're not workin'." The goblin looks around for confirmation from the others - they are nodding along eagerly.
"We're not fooling witht the arch. It's dangerous! It swallowed Treen some time ago and she hasn't returned. Mighty magic! Best not step near it sir!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Canti nods appreciatively as it sounds like Jaya was able to bamboozle the goblins. She isn't sure she should enter yet, so she continues to listen around the corner and out of sight. Also, she tries to remember if she's ever heard how many eyes Xanathar — or any beholder — has.

Nikkitch again tries to remember something, anything from his previous dealings Xanathar's Guild. Yet to no avail. Perhaps his age is getting to him.
[Bad History Roll]
“It’s either go forward, or head back to the other door and head to Shunn and talk to him. I say we go forward.” Jaya offers.
“I know it’s a bad idea, but I’m tempted to walk through the arch. Maybe the goblins will know more about it.
"Let me take a look at the arch," says Rico. "I am good at fixing things."
Arcana check: 28 (nat 20) :-)

Canti puts the final touches on the sketch of the arch she added to her book and closes the cover. "I say we try it," she says, smiling excitedly.

In a low whisper, "There are four goblins in-bound. Do we want to try playing this off as if we are here to inspect this portal for repair?"
"Fewer. People, fewer. Problems."
Nikkitch then immediately casts Invisibility, disappearing from view.

Sounds good!
Canti heads east and ducks outside the door out of sight.

Rico continues her study of the archway, much closer than the goblins would find comfortable. She comments, "I do not think Treen will be returning."
