Want to put one more thing out there, just for clarification:
Free actions in combat: 5e doesn't hit super hard on this but the previous DM was pretty strict on what he considered full actions. My style is more practical in regard to combat action economy. I do consider several kinds of checks free actions, more or less. Meaning, you can take your action and also do a check if its practical.
For example, you could run your distance, use your action to attack, and utilize any bonus actions if you have any, and also use a free action to roll a perception check if you're attempting to take a second to look at something mid-combat. you could also investigate the enemy for weaknesses you could sense. You can do an insight check to recall information you might remember about the monster or your environment. the only caveat I have with this kind of "Free action" economy is if you're attempting to utilize the free action in a way that would take more than 6 seconds, or if you're otherwise incapable do to physical restraints.
Does this make sense? do you all agree? and if it seems conviluted, would you like me to elaborate and implement a more defined and consistent rule?
I think this makes sense! think with moving, action and bonus action, there shouldn't be much more you can do in six seconds, except things like quick looks and glances, perception and insight, etc
I like this for many reasons, one of which is that we can still do some RPing while in combat...we can be better IN combat...solve puzzles....build relationships. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.
I love all the nonsense about how to walk in a group that happens in DND. It takes us forever just to make sure that the stupid, clumsy fighter doesn't trip on his own feet and knock over some ornamental spear or something. It feels very Scooby Doo. Maybe when we get into a rhythm of this campaign we can have something like a book of gameplays that we can reference to shorthand some of this for our DM. Might be fun to call a play for combat, dungeon diving, deception...a grouping of some of our skills that can just be auto.

Inspiration for whoever comes up with the best play names! Lol
Hey guys I wanted to touch base with you all, today is game night for my in-person group. You'll most likely get an update post from me tomorrow, so thank you for your patience, and it'll give you a little bit more time to solidify plans and edit any posts if needed!
No worries, no worries! Hey just an FYI we have a new recruit for our adventure. Culiril is joining us with a great character as soon as each of your characters (should they survive) make it back to west haven! In the mean time, they don't mind filling in as the Ghast monster you're currently fighting. so,
@Culiril if you don't mind, feel free introducing yourself here in OOC; the rest of the party please return the favor, and let's start this combat encounter off strong with a little PVP action!
Kneecap is a young dwarf, really only a teenager in dwarven years. He grew up sailing/fishing, but left to explore the world when he lost his dad, his mom was never in the picture. The "world" outside of the sea is new to him, and he is enjoying it so far, jumping into his experiences. He is a life cleric of Marthammor, god of wanderers. He likes to make jokes, usually maritime in nature, and he is missing a pupil in one eye.
Volneer is a wild mage with even wilder magic. His magic has caused trouble all his life, and he wanders the land, away from civilization so as not to injure others with the wildness of his magic, and he hopes to gain greater control of his magic.
OTheo, should we post in initiative order, or should we just post when we can?
OTheo, should we post in initiative order, or should we just post when we can?
not necessary at all! Post in any order that is convenient, and feel free to edit your posts up until you see the results/response from me. i only posted the ghouls action because it was first in initiative!
Hello and thank you for having me! Excited for my character to meet you all, but evidently I'm trying to kill you all first, playing the part of the Ghast!
Sabina is young woman and student of the arcane. She studied at a prestigious school of arcane arts, learning to manipulate the arcane through alchemy and her tinkering. While away from home, her family became accused of entanglement with an evil religious cult. As a result, on completing her studies, she was unable to return home. Instead, she traveled to Westhaven, hoping to make her way there using her various skills.
This is always the best way to meet a party, try to level them. Hehe. Glad to have you aboard!
Calim thought his adventuring days were through, having hung up his weapons and settled into a life smithing for the town. But, now on the year anniversary of his wife's death and with the birth of his grandson coming soon, he is rethinking the trajectory of his life and deciding what a new chapter might hold. Initially drawn to protect his family and business, he already feels a surge toward a life of adventure once more. Weilding a sword again has enlivened something within him.
Dorn is a noble from the house of Tallstag in Tethyr. After his eldest brother died, he left his pursuit of becoming a priest and took up knighthood, to finish what his eldest brother had started. With his squire Aria and a few other friends in tow, he set off for Westhaven to claim the new land in the name of his God Tyr, and the noble house of Tallstag.
This was my character before becoming DM, so after this dungeon he will phase out of the party and become a regular NPC!
Volneer, do me a favor and specify which Ghoul. I'm sure you'll see why when taking a look at that updated map, but in initiative order, those ghouls will separate before you have the chance to hit in-between them. Feel free to edit your post however you feel. You can even change your actions. If you keep the Ice-knife though, but choose a different target for it to be cast at, we'll still use the same roll. Let me know if that makes sense!
We'll give Callim some time to respond, and I'll move us into the south room this evening.

I'm in.
Two words: I’m in.

Just a quick reminder, I have used Tides of chaos so you can have me roll on wild magic when I cast a first level spell.

Looking forward to seeing what we uncover.
Thanks, and noted!

OTheo,
Don't sweat it. This is a long game. We will all have times that we are in and out. I'm hunkered down for a prolonged thing here.
We did GrEaT on Initiative...

My dice are broken, for sure. Calim is real rusty.
