First watch is uneventful. 

Partway through the second watch, Sable, you spot 3 ice mephits 60 feet away from your camp, small imp-like creatures comprising of ice. They are currently flapping right towards you. 

Roll initiative. 

Sable Initiative 14

Sable call out a warning to wake the others, "Monsters!"

Ice mephits initiative: 19

They will fly 30 feet towards you, and they all attempt to summon more mephits. 

One of them succeeds, summoning 3 mephits within melee range around Sable, which I’ll roll initiative for…

Flanking Sable, the 3 summoned mephits will each make a claw attack against her. 

1st mephit:

To hit: 19 ((13,16)+3)

Damage: 4 slashing damage plus 4 cold damage

2nd mephit:

To hit: 20 ((3,17)+3)

Damage: 5 slashing damage plus 4 cold damage

Wow… I kept rolling max damage… Sable is unconscious I believe. 

The 3rd summoned mephit will make a claw attack against Erzer, who is surprised. 

To hit: 22 (19+3)

Damage: 5 slashing damage plus 4 cold damage

(These d4’s are bloodthirsty today…)

I will say that Sable did not manage to say anything before she was reduced to 0 hit points. 

I will say though, that everyone was woken up by the sounds of combat. 

Everyone else, roll initiative. You are surprised.

The Ice Mephits’ turn (again):

All 6 Mephits position themselves to use frost breath one after the other on the remaining conscious characters.

And Erzer could have technically warned us too since they were always awake watching to help avoid a surprise.
