Sparhawk wrinkles his crooked nose in disgust. "This place has seen better days" he says to Undril. "Why does Commander Breakbone wish to hold this location?"
"Perhaps the commander would be willing to speak with us briefly before we continue on our mission."
"Yes, Captain Sparhawk is it? Since we met under less than ideal circumstances allow me to introduce myself, I am known as Koselig Pepplethrower, a purveyor of many restorative and wonderful concoctions."
The diminutive gnome gives a pause before continuing to let his introduction gain any credence or value that it would normally garnish if it weren't so rushed.
"What is this mission of which you speak? And how urgent are it's demands on the daylight remaining in this day?" Koselig notices the 4 rowboats and hastily adds, "Perhaps the use of a rowboat to replace our lost canoe could aid in our travels?"
"Ah, Koselig, I thought you were with the priestess and her mission." The half orc smiles, and shakes the gnomes hand. The gnome notices that the captain wears a strange looking octopus necklace.
"I and my companions were all called on by our deities in one way or another. We travel to the Yatil Mountains, in search of the Lost caverns of Tsojcanth. There, we seek to recover a long-lost artifact. A portal has opened and dead and demonic beings seem to be entering our lands. We will use the artifact to close the portal, thus stopping the foretold cataclysm."
The captain pauses momentarily, wiping some blood from his crooked nose. Then he continues without a thought or explanation.
"Unfortunately, most in Chult seem to have a very small or unfortunately, a very self-centered view on the state of things. But it is quite clear at this camp that Chult is close to a state of being overrun. Signs of this pestilence on the lands have been present for quite some time. Our group will do what we must to save Chult and the world from ruin."
Whether Koselig believes the captain or not, it is quite clear to him that the captain is resolute, perhaps even dogmatic (Paladin) in his cause, with all of his being. He'll have to judge Cha!jil and Tess separately. When Koselig is near the huge armored half-orc, he feels an unexplained sense of confidence and fortitude (Aura of protection).
A guard at the gate speaks to Undril "Oi, you should go find Captian Firebeard. He'll let you know where you're needed."
Addressing the others broadly, but speaking directly to Sparhawk "You'd better find Captain Salhana; chain of command, and all. XO will like have you speak with the commander after she briefs him."
Order of the Gauntlet in Chult. Locals might know most of this, depending how looped in they are ro recent events (past year or so)
Order of theGauntlet
Members of the Order of the Gauntlet vow to protect others from the depredations of evildoers. Placing their faith in good-aligned deities such as Torm, Helm, and Tyr, they bring the strength of their faith, their hearts, and their weapons to bear against villainy.
The order has committed considerable resources toward quelling the undead menace in Chult. Its forward base, Camp Righteous, was overrun by undead. The order, undaunted, built a new fortification even deeper in the jungle. Dubbed Camp Vengeance, it has fallen on hard times.
All members of the Order of the Gauntlet are unflinchingly brave, but many of their expeditions fare poorly or meet with outright disaster when confronted by conditions that confound their training and contradict their mindset
"Right away," Undril answer the guard, then turns ro the others, "I'll check in with you when I am able. Thank you for your aid back there. Things were looking grim." She glances around. "Not that they're looking much better at the moment, I admit." Resignedly, she turns and heads off to find Captain Firebeard.
<I haven't put it in owlbear yet, you're just at gate, by the boats. The guard didn't say where to find the executive officer, so you could ask or just act like you know what your doing and find her on your own. It's really up to you>
List of places you could opt to check out within Camp Vengeance:
Watchtowers,
Animal pen,
The knights built this pen for swine, but the camp proved too unhealthy for them and they all died. The current livestock consists of four sickly goats..
Field Hospital Tents,
Commamd Tent,
Soldiers' tents
Latrine (I dont know why you'd want to investigate it, but you'd certainlly notice it)
Anywhere but Chult, these latrines would be excellent. Here, daily rain floods the pits and flushes their contents through the camp. As if that’s not bad enough, the wooden structures are sinking into the soft ground around the pits, threatening at any moment to collapse utterly. Most soldiers in the camp avoid the latrines and instead relieve themselves in the jungle (if they can volunteer for outside work details) or over the top of the palisade wall. Either option is safer and more sanitary than using the latrines.
As you enter the command tent, you are immediately greeted by a Tehtyrian woman standing at the ready. The haggard but beautiful woman is clearly expecting you. Thethyrian, through and through, she wears her brown hair short, her dusky skin aglow in the still hot and humid air of early evening. Despite her effoets to conceal it, her piercing blue eyes light up when they see the paladin. "Captain Sparhawk, welcome to our humble post. Every child in my hometown of Velen has heard tales of your exploits, how you crushed the Nelanther pirates. Please, tell me how you all came to this remote corner of Chult in this, our time of need."
“ Captain Salhana, I presume.” Sparhawk smiles and grasps her hand. “The troops look like they have held well, but your camp certainly has seen better days.”
Yes, the cruel pirate Grindal had enslaved much of Luskin when we returned. He had acquired an artifact of tremendous power and.., well..a story for another time.”
”we found your brave priestess, Undeil but most of the others perished. This curious gnome, Koselig another survivor.”
Sparhawk pauses,
”we head to the Yatil Mountains . A portal has opened and dead and demonic beings seem to be entering our lands. I believe some of the problems here are due to this rift, so we will stop it at the source.”
<that's the Oerth name for the mountain range. If Tess said it, that would be in character. She's been quiet in the thread, but I imagine she's been talking about those mountains the whole way, seeing as she dound her way to another planet wandering around them.>
<All the wandering undead are actually part of Chult's history. They are endemic.>
Ras Nsi, a mythic, villainous figure among Chultans created them. Ras Nsi was a human paladin and a sworn protector of the city of Mezro. He betrayed his oaths and was banished. Rather than redeem himself, he raised an undead army to conquer Mezro. The would-be tyrant was defeated and banished once more. Mezro was later destroyed by the Spellplague (or so it seemed), during which Ras Nsi lost his power to create and command undead, leaving the vestiges of his undead army to roam unchecked throughout the jungle.
"Demons? Planar rifts? My word. I had no idea. We were sent with a singular purpose: to rid the undead menace from Chult. We know the rivers are tbe veins of chumt, and at its heart, the Aldani Basin. If we can make the basin safe, we can supply garrisons through it the continent and clear this unholy plague from the land. You are not a member of our order, but your words move me to ask you now, will you stand with us? I have been charged with assembling a party to eliminate any undead encountered in an area from here to the Mistcliff. If you join us, you have my word that the Order jf the Gauntlet will support your quest to vanquish these demon portals. On my sword, I Perne Salhana, of the Wealdath, make this promise. I have assembled an eight man detachment of soldiers and Tribal Warriors. The patrol should take two weeks in all. I know you didn't ask for this, but I belive fate has brought you to us, captain, and this providence emboldened me. So, what do you say? The patrol will step off at first light."
Koselig holds his sleeve against his mouth and nose to avoid breathing in the foul odors that accompany Camp Vengeance. "Can I join with you Captain, whether it's this grand quest to the mountains or a minor detour to quell some undead? I just want to be away from here and right quick!"

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Knowing that the small group assembled could use all the support it can get, the captain looks at his companions, but he feels compelled to help this desperate lot.
"Perne Salhana, your words and the plight of your brave warriors speaks to me. I too believe in fate." He looks at his companions. "I cannot speak for my friends, but I serve Marduk, and he despises undead more than anything."
Responding to her formally, the captain says, "I, Sir Sparhawk, Knight of the Ancient Pandion Order, will aid you for two weeks time. At the end of this time, I must proceed on my mission to the mountains."
The captain spits into his hand and holds it to her to shake in agreement.
"As to you, noble Koselig," The captain says, looking at the Gnome,"if you wish to join me, you are welcome as long as it suits you. Know that I am fair and loyal to my friends, but I've been told, my wrath toward those who abuse power is fueled by my gods."
"How did this camp end up like this? And why doesn't anyone do anything about it?" momentarily distracted by the filth and squalor Koselig turns his attention back to Sparhawk, "Your words ring true and I can feel it in my bones. I am an Alchemist by trade and recently an Adventurer by circumstance it would seem."
Digging around in his backpack he produces a small bundle which he unwraps. It is a finely lacquered cherry wood case that unfolds to create a wide and steady base with a metal frame and hinged arm capable of holding a beaker over an open flame. It contains two glass beakers, a glass rod for stirring, small mortar and pestle, and a pouch of common alchemical ingredients, including salt, powdered iron, and purified water.
"I could cure those sickly goats if that might help. But they really need to bury those latrines as a start." Koselig will go about using his Alchemical Supplies and his Restorative Reagents feature to cast Lesser Restoration on each of the four goats so that they are no longer sickly or diseased.

Cha!jil looked very disappointed but she was used to colonisers making the worst possible decisions so simply accepted it and tried not to think about the oncoming storm of death....
Sparhawk looks at his other companions, "I know this is off our promised mission, but Cha!jil and Tess, your power against the undead was effective. I would owe you a great debt if you would join me as I pursue this charge for the next few weeks?"
"Ah, the goats, yes; they have been neglected, what with Sister Cyas and her acolytes kept busy enough tending to the wounded warriors." Capt. Salhana. explains, "As for the camp, you may know the jungle is a hostile place. Our methods have proven effective across Faerun, but here, things are just not going our way. There is certainly room for improvement. If you'd like to discuss matters with Commander Breakbone, I'm sure he'll be thriled that youve agreed to help us secure the area outside the wire." the Tehtyrian suggests, "Would you like to speak with him?"
