"Do we need to find a butterfly net or do you all feel lucky about chasing a ball of eyes about a shop... like folks at a picnic grabbing a greased pig?" Damros may be chastised but his mind and mouth are still locked and loaded.
Uza Solizeph is an old woman who sells books out of a narrow three-story building on Sorn Street in the Trades Ward. She claims to have trapped a monster in her shop and fears for the welfare of her books and her cat. The City Watch isn’t likely to lend a hand, given Uza’s propensity for tall tales, but the Harpers owe her a favor. You’ll find her sobbing at Felzoun’s Folly, a tavern on the corner of Sorn Street and Salabar Street.
^ Recalling the original 'call to action', it appears we are already 'nearly there' since the Folly is on Sorn Street as is Uza's shop. A short walk to discover just what is in the shop with her cat. Shall we proceed?
You make your way to the shop and (I assume) one of you unlocks the door. Inside it's a mess. It looks like the place has been ransacked, with shelves knocked over, items strewn over the floor. You hear mewing from the third floor of the building.
Kylaski will carefully make her way inside and look for a way up. It's not so much she's concerned about breaking anything as she doesn't want to stumble and fall.
There are stairs. The disarray is not enough to make it a trip hazard (no difficult terrain). But enough to see an obvious mess around that probably shouldn't be there.
Kylaski will head up the stairs in the direction of the mewing cat. Hopefully others are following for Kylaski isn't cautious enough to confirm that before heading into the unknown.
You head up, making your way to the third floor to find the mewing cat... Except the mewing isn't coming from a cat. It's coming from a very similar creature to Barnacle. It's a spectator mewing. And also trashing the place as its searching for something. (no prices for guessing what).
Initiative has started. Skye and Damros get chance to react before the spectator (above it's init) . And then after it's first turn we will be into the normal anyone in any order.
The door, its brass bell long since silenced, groaned open on a hinge that protested with a sound like grinding teeth. A gust of stale, dust-heavy air, thick with the scent of dried herbs and spilled ink, billowed out to greet everyone. The light thorugh the window and open doorframe struggled to penetrate the gloom, illuminating a scene of utter, violent chaos.
The shop had not been looted; it had been turned upside down and then righted. Whatever had happened here was not interested in being careful or discreet. Damros was certain the City Guard would view it as a forensic disaster. Everything from every shelf, every flat surface had been swept onto the floor, helter skelter.
Glass jars of shimmering potion ingredients, stacks of enchanted scrolls, and leather-bound tomes — scattered like confetti across the floor. The contents of the jars had congealed into shimmering, multicolored puddles, some still bubbling faintly, others radiating a dull, malevolent light. A crystal orb lay cracked and inert in the center of the floor, its soft internal light extinguished, now just another piece of junk amidst the debris.
For all the randomness of the mess, It was a search with a purpose, a singular, desperate hunt for one specific thing. An overturned diviner's table held a star-chart, not merely flipped, but torn from its frame, its ancient parchment ripped in two. A rack of wands lay splintered, but one was missing entirely, its outline clearly visible in the thick layer of dust. The destruction was not random, but followed a path of escalating desperation, a frantic turning over of every stone in pursuit of a single, all-important quarry. The final, terrible, and empty silence of the room was the only reply.
"Think the old lady might pay us to clean this mess up after we catch..." he nods his head toward the orb creature. "Unless you want me to blast it with eldritch energy, I can only body block the staircase down... anybody got something restraining.. like web or hold eyeball?"
Skye darts into the room, sees the Spectator, and in a moment of righteous disgust for an aberration channels the balancing power of her blood and patron into a Witch Bolt of surpassing might.
Nat 20 witch bolt for 60 Lightning Damage and 2 Thunder damage.
[Well that should do it, no such thing as overkill when it’s a monster! Shame there was no one around to see such a feat as it’d be an impressive rumour to have floating around that our party member smited/evaporated a spectator on the spot 😂]
It would be a shame if it was immune to lightning damage.....
But it's not. So it's 13hp are obliterated. The gazer explodes but the lightning is so powerful it vaporises the gore as well, you all remain clean. It was almost as if someone just popped a balloon.
Xaul lets out a bellowing laugh before noticing Barnacle's wide eyed stare, and comforts him with a pat. 'Nice one Skye! Ahh, buddy no it's alright, you're on our side see?'
With the room supposedly clear of threats, he'll try and see if he can find and lure out the missing cat. [Investigation: 12]

Kylaski suggests, "If it's smart enough, I can try making it roll around laughing. That should make it easier to catch."

"Lead the way!" says the directionally chalanged Kylaski.

Kylaski says, "Aren't you a cute thing. But not well behaved."
Init: 23 rolled in game log
Damros Init. 21
(I'd already rolled init in the encounter builder, hence Skye and Damros first.)

As the aberration evaporates, Kylaski says, "Aww. Now we'll never know what that cute thing was looking for..."
"Think you can talk to the old lady's cat to find out what was going on?"
