Outside the steading Fah'lin gets started digging a pit, aided with Mold Earth we'll have a big deep pit in no time. How tall would we wager a Frost Giant stands?
Strangely the listing for the giants doesn't say how tall they are. It does say that ogres are 8-10' tall and are large. Hill giants and Frost giants are huge so lets say they are around 15' tall.
There are rooms under the steading that have 10' thick stone walls and a lockable door. Wouldn't it be easier to just reinforce the door rather than trying to dig a pit that a 15' giant can't climb out of?
"A lockable room sounds good," says Thar "but are we doing this to kill the giants or to see if we can negotiate? I would assume that as they use the Chain Gate to meet, the frost giants home must be some significant distance away and thus getting reinforcements without the gate could be difficult. Maybe we could see if we can reach an accord to stop the fight. Failing that I could just do a Passwall from above the room and drop fireballs in!"
"What more can we gain from negotiation? Information? Wealth? I'd wager none of these giants are running this operation. Someone else is pulling the strings. What should we demand, if the Giants aren't able to end these assaults?" Fahlin asks.

Arya "Negotiate? That's adorable. I have a cunning plan... the gate opens, we go through (invisible) and take their chain then gate to the Node near here. Gating to a Node means we can bring the chain through with us. Ta da! We now have two chains."

There are drow in the background of this grand alliance of giants, not that giants need much prodding to attack and pillage.
Overland or by chain gate? Each has advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of going by Chain Gate is that you will find it without trouble, overland may be difficult as you only have a vague location. The advantage of overland is that you will be able to scout it out at a distance instead of walking in sight unseen.
The next day comes and you are all rested up. Thar sets the chain in a circle then makes the adjustment causing it to connect to the Ley Line Node. You step into the circle ans suddenly you aren't in an underground room in Harrenhal, instead you are in a depression in a glade surrounded by hills. You see a glowing circle the same size as the chain surrounding you. Also there are four large statues of men in armour surrounding this point a further 20' out at each cardinal point.
"Ooh, Those don't like all that friendly." Fah'lin says, then calls out, "Forest Guardians! Please allow us safe passage." He shrugs back at the party. Uncertain of his approach.

They turn to face you and all speak "You must prove your worth to use the Great Power of the Ley LInes. Only the most accomplished; be it mind, body or spirit will be allowed entry." As you have already 'entered' that last bit may be scripted.
(I have missed about 3 days worth, where should i start reading to catch up? I left off at Fah'Lin persuading the giants to leave)

Oops, I missed that we're now level 10...

"How long do you suppose we'd be traveling on the Ley Lines?" Fah'lin asks, "We don't want to leave Harrenhal unprotected."

The nearest Node to Harrenhal is (roll d100) miles away.

(It's the same distance in either case? What lies 27 miles that direction on this plane? Mountains, city, ocean?)

Through the chain gate is two steps, overland is a day’s travel into the mountains.
"2 steps?! Let's go have a look! First thing in the morning."
