"Well I suppose it is to be expected... they are dumb giants after all. If two of these 'Chain Gates' are opened at the same time with this link turned so..." he demonstrates "a gate opens between them. However you can open it a different way and connect to Ley Line nodes anywhere on Abeir-Toril (DM note: that's what the world of the forgotten realms is called), if we can work out the mapping properly. We could ask Chercheurs, this is the sort of stuff he's good at."
When deployed you get a circle 10' diameter. You walk into the circle and appear at the other end of the connection and walk off.
"Here I've been walking around the world likes a sucker..." Fah'lin says, "It's a distinct threat, but it's too valuable to destroy." He thinks a moment and adds, "These drow could appear in an instant and reek havoc, but worse, these gates could be anywhere..."

Arya "I have a cunning plan... We know the frost giants have a chain gate... We know that they will try to connect it to this chain gate at the next full moon... huh, wadayathink?"
Fah'lin rolls the gate up and drops it in a sack. "We'll be ready when the time comes." Fah'lin looks up at the moon. (How much time is that?)
Fah'lin turns to Prince Laelron, the merchant, and Arya's castle steward and poses a question, "What will it take to repurpose this Steading to suit a group like us as our own base of operations?" To the party he adds, it's a lot closer to the Forge than Neverwinter."
If we can figure out how many gates there are we might be able to secure them all and set up waypoints all over the world.

DM counts on fingers "Er.. 11 days?"

The merchant, William Hurst, owns many caravans (amongst other things) and your question sparks a thought "My family has been working on a way to cut the travel time from Neverwinter, and to a lesser degree Lusken and Waterdeep, to the east (Silverymoon and the elven lands of The High Forest). This place could be a way-station on a new east/west path that cuts that travel time almost in half. If you could guarantee security in this part of the road I would be willing to pay for the upgrade of this place. Ongoing expenses would be your problem."
Prince Laelron chimes in "I'll have to talk to Mother but increased trade into our lands is a good thing. I'm sure I could talk her into stationing some troops here to help with guarding caravans and raider suppression."
The steward (Alfred Pennyworth) "This place is massive so a large staff would be necessary... (mumbles to himself and scratches notes on paper)... certain costs could be defrayed by charges to caravan traffic... (mumbles some more)... " His conclusion converted to game mechanics; a lifestyle cost of 80gp/day when not adventuring. This can be split amongst you as you see fit.
If we can figure out how many gates there are we might be able to secure them all and set up waypoints all over the world.
When the chain gate links to a Ley Line Node you can step through and pick up the chain from the other side. The chain gate only connects to another chain gate when they are both set up to do so. Therefor there is no risk of accidental connection. Also, when two gates connect you can't walk through and bring your own end with you. A chain can be used for a maximum of 1 hour per day. The Prince "Someone at Mother's court may have information about how many of these things exist." Also you could ask Chercheurs.
"We have what? 11 days to prepare? Let's insure this place is cleared out then move the camp up here. If the Giants have an appropriate size Stockade we can open the gate Where anyone coming through will be secured." Fahlin suggests, "Do we want to venture into these Ley Lines before then?"
"Harrenhal? Feels oddly depressing." (I'm sensing a theme)
"We're going to need a way of securing this treasure before it starts attracting attention."

Working out how to use the gate to go to a Ley Line Node requires either a DC20 Arcana check or a visit to your friendly wizard, Chercheurs.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Thar will check his arcana knowledge to try to find a Ley Line Node. "Thank you Fah'lin for your guidance, but before I start perhaps Aeliarin can provide me with some inspiration." I assume Tarnce is able to cast Enhance Ability.
Outside the steading Fah'lin gets started digging a pit, aided with Mold Earth we'll have a big deep pit in no time. How tall would we wager a Frost Giant stands?

You work out how to connect to the nearest Ley Line Node, at present you have no idea where it is. The gate can remain open for an hour so you walk back through. If the gate closes with you on the other side then... walk.

Strangely the listing for the giants doesn't say how tall they are. It does say that ogres are 8-10' tall and are large. Hill giants and Frost giants are huge so lets say they are around 15' tall.
There are rooms under the steading that have 10' thick stone walls and a lockable door. Wouldn't it be easier to just reinforce the door rather than trying to dig a pit that a 15' giant can't climb out of?
Guidance you can have. (Three of us can cast it now.)

Arya "We know that the frost giants have one."
"Can we disable it without causing permanent damage," asks Gijigume.
“Easy, just roll it up. It needs to be in a circle to work.”

If Thar tries to solve it Fah'lin will help with Guidance.
