Daegal pats his pockets, "150 gold upfront for most of these guides might be hard to come by, unless one of you have deep pockets. Perhaps Azaka or the tabaxi, unless you guys think we should find a few jobs around town to cover the cost."
OOC: Daegal doesn't have any cartographers tools. Could Daegal do an insight check on each of the guides to see who might be the best choice and who might be hiding something?
Agathar is pondering. "I don't know if we should spend this much on a guide and rely on ourselves finding enough gold in our expedition to feed that guide for the next days, or if we should first investigate in places that can be easily reached without them. After all, our mission is not to get rich by seeking who knows what treasures are hidden in the jungle, but to get information about the origin of this strange evil. If a guide is what we need to achieve that specific goal, I have no hesitation in paying the full amount out of my own pocket..."
OOC: Agathar isn't proficient with cartographer tools, too
OOC: Leafric is not proficient with cartographer tools eithers
"My line of business doesn't exactly... pay generously." She looks around, "We seem like a capable enough group to branch out a bit on our own until we find more specific information leading to where our item is." She pauses for a moment, then proposes, "If we're going to spend money, we need to buy a 'charter of exploration' at Fort Beluarian just to North before we go into the jungle. I overheard the bar maiden say the Flaming Fist punishes explorers who don’t have the required paperwork."
Before choosing a guide or departing to Fort Beluarian, Agathar tries to get some information on the Order of the Gauntet which should be, or should have been, present here in Port Nyanzaru. Undead are not so far from our problem, after all...
Daegal looks at the posters, and all of them apart from river and flask are hiding something. Azaka seems slightly odd, Eku writes with a celestial accent, faroul and gondolo are inexperianced. salida seems suspicious.
The order of the gauntlet had a base in chult, called camp righteous. this was overrun by undead, however, and they have set up a second one, called camp vengeance. the ruins of camp righteous are still in the jungle.
"Bad news" Agathar says to his companion coming back from his little investigation "The Order of the Gauntlet is here no more, it seems they've moved to a new camp, after their first one were destroyed by undead. I hoped we could talk with some of them recruiting here in the city, but it seems we're too late for that."
Leafric sighs with their great luck that the Order would be run out, "Did you find out where Camp Vengeance might be? Anything we do is going to take us into the jungle, maybe if we get exploring papers from the Fort, we can ask someone there if they have heard of this death curse and have any hints to where we should start looking first to find the Soulmonger artifact. See if they also may know what might await us in Mbala."
Daegal will share his insights about the guides. "That's unfortunate about the Order. I'm curious if the death curse affects the undead. It would answer some questions either way. That sounds like a good idea, Leafric. If all else fails, we could hire River and Flask. I think they might be the best choice."
Leafric will say, "Daegal, you're good at reading people, that's quite the asset. It's nice that River and Flask don't want any money up front, the four gold a day could save our hides in the long run."

(OOC: I just looked at the map the DM gave us, Camp Vengeance is right down the river on the way to Mbala, would be easy to hit it on the way)
OOC: Shall we roleplay it (as if Leafric found the map)?
Agathar looks at the parchment in Leafric hands. "What a finding you have here! It's somewhat incomplete but it gives us some directions indeed." he says pointing at the map. "Isn't that Fort Beluarian we spoke about? And we seem to be in the bay where the dragon turtle won't let you navigate..." Following this river we will reach the surroundings of Mbala... so where could Orolunga be? "Hey.. What about that 'O' sign..." the Paladin traces a line with his finger from Mbala going west to the nearest mountains "...could it possibly be 'Orolunga' where that 'presence' wanted us to speak with a 'guardian'?"
(OOC: I just went back and realized the archmage said she would give us the incomplete map if we agreed to her quest -- I had forgotten that part as it's been a few days)
"Before the poor fellow passed out, I believe he said Orolunga was East of Mbala. How far east is something River and Flask may be able to tell us or could at the least help us find."
It is about midday. there is a notice board in the port, with 5 different guide options. here are their posters:
1. Azaka stormfang
2. Eku
3. Faroul and Gondolo
4. River mist and Flask of wine
5. Salida
OOC: You have been granted access to the map. do any of your characters have cartographers tools?

Ok, roll for insight
sheesh, guides are expensive. ((Ooc)) no cart tools, I might be able to figure which is up looking at a map but that's about it.

Ok, roll for investigation
Natural 20 for 25 insight
Rolled 19 + 0 = 19 (lucky me!)

As you discuss this, you see a man in a dark cloak walk up. he looks around, and asks you: "Are you adventurers?"
Daegal will turn to the man in a dark cloak, "Some would call us that. Who are you? I'm called Daegal and these are my friends."
