Rogi feels like he didn't understand what she wanted him to do, at all, but he shrugs and steps into the room. Putting the Joy of Extradimensional Spaces down on the table it was originally, he uses the mechanical hand to pick up the other books and deposits each under the study table, then looks at her quizzically. What was the point of doing that?
Meredith shrugged, " Should I just go in? The worst they can do is kick me out and I can do most of my research through firsthand observations anyway."
Rogi enters the room. It is definitely uninhabited, including under the study table.
Rogi replaces The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces on the study table where it had been. He then directs his magic hand to pick up a second book. Bell notices that there is writing in the margins of this second book just before Rogi succeeds in moving it under the table. It will take time to place all of them there…
"Oh for goodness sake," Bellclicks her tongue at seeing Rogi treat the books like they are mimics or something. Rushing into the room Bell grabs the books away from Rogi's fancy touching stick and lays them on the floor so she can read the titles of the closed books or note any oddities in the open books.
Most of the books are open, layered one upon another. The titles seem to cover a variety of topics and the authors are varied as well. Each of the open books has notes written in the margin. I’m going to say that Bell spends 10 minutes laying out the books on the floor and investigating, which she may roll. The chamber is 10x10 feet or so, and everyone fits within, although with books on the floor there is not much room to move around. The door remains open.
Erudisia investigates the draws of the desk for any clues and then she turns to the walls. With the length of time an avowed may use only one study room, she looks to see if there any clues as to Matreus’ current area of focus or personal decorations for the room.
The half title page – the inside cover – of The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces is signed “– Fistandia.”
(Some people, perhaps even Rogi, sign books in this way to indicate ownership.)
All of the other books in Matreus’ room are similarly signed “– Fistandia” on their inside covers.
These signatures match the penmanship of the notes in the margins of the books.
Erudisia discovers
In the drawer is the thick study room log book, which seems to go back many years. A ribbon marks the most recent page showing Matreus' name written in almost every day. His signature is different from the margin notes written in The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces.
Regarding personal effects. On one wall hangs a dusty, expensively framed painting of a young man in well-cut wizards’ robes, his wand glowing brilliantly, lending depth and strength to the wizard’s handsome face. His head is held at an angle, and above a cocky smile, his eyes show warmth and amusement. The background is the harbor of Waterdeep. The Lord’s Palace of Waterdeep is visible too, surrounded in scaffolding during the building of Timehands, the golemwork clock. Timehands was completed in 1455 DR, and the current year is 1492 DR. Therefore, the painting’s subject must be almost 40 years old if this clue to its provenance is accurate. The painting is signed “ – Fistandia.” Erudisia thinks to check the back of the painting. A small card adhered to the backing reads, “Freyot, 1454, Waterdeep.” Added in another hand, “Keep it, my dear sister, to remember me.” Hanging on another wall is a woven folk-tapestry showing flora and fauna of the Dessarin Hills – an area near Matreus’ home of Yartar.
Meredith circles back to the handwritten notes in The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces. The last few notes that Bell read aloud are deliberately written on separate lines: “shut the door to open the door… unlock the door to unlock it… don’t forget scepter…”
(I'll post Knowledge results after a quorum have posted their rolls.)
Over the course of the last half-tenday that you’ve been at Candlekeep, the name Fistandia has been mentioned. You get the sense she was once a Seeker at Candlekeep, like you. She became a wizardess. Decades passed. Her last wishes were a donation of all of her books to Candlekeep.
"Fistandia..." Rogi quoted. "It's on all the books. He had the book on extradimensional spaces open when he disappeared. Perhaps into such a space?" He looked at the others. "What do you want to do? Shall we go report this to the librarians here? If one of their own has gone missing, rather than just lost track of time working, I think they would want to know. And I'm not sure we can safely meddle with such magics."
Bell looks up from her spot on the floor, surrounded by books. "Rogi isn't wrong. This material is way beyond anything I've ever studied before." She looks up at all the faces, "I would hate to think what might happen if we botched a spell and ended up sucked into some nameless dimension with no way home."
Erudisia taps a finger to her chin. “If we have no spell to join him, perhaps bringing this book to the Keeper or the Sages is best, and they can identify the space and the spells needed to bring Matreus back. Or else we just wait. If when last you were here there were biscuits and now there are crumbs.
“He may not be pleased if he can return by himself and we ask the Sages to extract him. An unhappy adjutant may not lead to us getting any new volumes either.”
