Seeing Paevira approach without a weapon drawn made Zarbyn feel a little silly now. Besides if they were hostile wouldn't they have shown signs of aggression by now. And what did he think he was going to do against the five of them with a dagger anyway. He sheathed his dagger and started tying a small loop in one end of the rope.
Hearing one of the others call out a question made him realize if he wanted any answers to his questions he should start answering theirs.
"My name is Zarbyn. I was supposed to meet someone here at the bridge but my ship was delayed making port. In order to try and make the meeting a spell was cast to give me the speed of a horse but I am still almost two hours late and fear I may have missed her."
He takes the other end of the rope and slips it through the small loop pulling only about a foot through, he then holds up the larger circular loop with both hands. "You can put one of these around each wheel and cinch it to give better traction in loose soil, mud, or snow. It could help keep your... cart from meeting the same fate as your wagon and make it a little easier for your donkey to pull."

'You're looking for Professor Storm?' Iólinder replied. He turned his head with a forlorn look towards the makeshift cairn. 'We all missed her.'
"Yes, I was to deliver this to her..." and with that Zarbyn produces a rectangular box about 8 inches long and 3 inches wide, "it has information Professor Storm needs for her expedition." he then follows your gaze toward the cairn as some of his initial fears are silently confirmed.
His shoulders slump and he bows his head as he realizes who the cairn is for, "I'm too late. I ran as fast as the magic allowed and I was still too late." After a moment he looks back up, "Were you part of her expedition? Maybe this can provide you with the help that was meant for Professor Storm?" and Zarbyn will hold out the metal box, offering it to Paevira.

— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Zarbyn takes a fancy-looking metal box out of his back. Taking a closer look, instead of a lock mechanism, on the top, it appears to have a round indentation, 1 inches in diameter (something gets pressed into this) and a 1-inch slit, about the size of a very thick coin.
Paevira has seen a box like this before. If the mechanism is not disarmed with the appropriate personal belongings of the person it is meant for, there is a chamber of acid inside, that will destroy the contents if it is forced open.
Paevira will take the box and welcome Zarbyn by offering him her hand.
”I am Paevira, its a pleasure to meet you Mr Zarbyn. Come and meet the others. It has been a tragic day so far, but hopefully some good can yet come to us. It must be exhausting to run that fast and that far, even with magical aid. Do you need any water?”
She will look over the box a bit and seeing the special lock will tell the others “ this box is locked with a special lock, we need a special round key to open it without ruining what it contains. Must be very important, these boxes do not come cheap.”
Amdaeng deflated as Vydar turned away....so much for making friends.....
Then she was back on alert as the newcomer arrived....but glad to note he didn't seem to be an enemy.....Ms. Storm seemed to have had a lot of friends for someone who was traipsing round the wilds most of the time.
" Hello Zarbyn!! I'm Amdaeng. Nice to meet you......wish the circumstances were better. So....we gonna go beat the crap out of the ones who murdered her or what?"
a sinister look crosses her face for an instant before her optimistic smile returns and she finishes helping mend the cart and reload the crates of gear.
Vydar tilts his head curiously when the newcomer mentions a spell. So this man is another mage eh? Interesting.
He nods to Iolinder when the half-elf seems to agree to his terms. Then he looks back at Zarbyn. This guy is who Natalie was supposed to meet? Patting Charlie on the neck, he walks towards where the red-head is talking to the newcomer. The young elf still has a slightly irritated look on his face, but it is replaced by interest when Zarbyn pulls an intricate box from his bag, and hands it to Paevira. He watches intently as the other elf inspects it. After she mentions a key, he says. "Let me see that."
If she hands him the box, he will take Storm's hat out of his satchel and press the round gem on it's rim into the round indent.
He doesn't look up from what he's doing when Amdaeng approaches and introduces herself to the other human. With everything that had happened earlier and all the thoughts and emotions running through his head at the time, he hadn't noticed the woman deflate after his blunt comment. Though even if he'd been in the right state of mind when she'd approached him, he likely would have responded in a similar manner. The young elf isn't used to having friends, and is not great at picking up on social cues. However, when she mentions beating up the murderers...
"Oh I plan to do more than beat the crap out of those bastards." He says without looking up from the box.
Lev blinks, not really having expected an explanation for the rope. Hmmm...
He watches silently as Zarbyn speaks with Paevira. So he's the one Natalie was going to meet with. Well, at lest they know why he's here now, not that it matters much anymore. He listens as everyone gathers around to look at the chest. For once Lev wishes he could be curious, but finds that he really doesn't care much about this box. So why is he still here? For some reason he feels stuck. He doesn't know where else to go for one, but... well he also feels the same way as Amdaeng and the others. Whoever did this... not only did they kill a good person, they also ruined all of their plans.
As Vydar moves to press the gemstone into the box, Lev walks around the cart and sticks his hands in the pockets of his trousers. "There's a slot there too,"he says. "Might need more than just that hat, if that's even the right object." His face is grim, clearly he's ready to go bring justice upon those who did this even though he hasn't vocalized his agreement.
(OOC: I figure Paevira was very smooth in taking the chest off of the new guy...but he probably doesn't want to part with it so easily.....and likely grabbed it back! (not sure if Brian_Avery can post or not?.)
Vydar: Taking a look at the circle on the top of the box, Vydar, now having his wits back, takes Storm's hat out of the bag. He looks at the round gem on the front of the hat. He's got it. It seems to be a perfect fit! Now....what would go in the thick one inch slot, and will Zarbyn allow them to open the box?
Zarbyn: When you see Vydar take the hat out of his bag, you immediately recognize it as Professor Natalie Storms Hat!
In addition to the round stone, you see the remarkable feathers attached to the side of the hat, they seem to be all the colors of the rainbow.
After giving the metal box to Paevira to examine he takes her offered hand and allows himself to be led over and meet with the others. "I have my waterskin, thank you. I'll refill it here before leaving." He says and makes a small nod toward the river.
"Hi, it is nice to meet you too Amdaeng. How do you know that professor Storm was murdered? I thought that... well... I wasn't here but guessed maybe she perished from the obvious accident with the wagon." Zarbyn notices Vydar approaching Paevira to also examine the metal box.
Getting a look at everyone from a closer vantage point than the other side of the bridge Zarbyn notices they all share the dusty appearance of road weary travelers. All except one. Vydar's clothing looks as fresh and clean as if he just donned it. He had heard tales of powerful wizards and their vanity, always using magic to clean their clothing and present an immaculate appearance. He would have to remember to give this one the respect he was due.
Snapped out of his musings by Lev's comments and recognizing Professor Storm's hat Zarbyn asks, "That's Professor Storm's hat," pointing at the hat in Vydar's hand, "do you have any of her other possessions? Maybe something else of hers fits in the slot below the indentation?"

Iòlinder gave Vydar a nod. 'We'll discuss everything when we've got a chance to sit down.'

Zarbyn:
You suspect that opening the box you were given would require some of Storm's personal belongings.
Hearing Iòlinder, your fears are confirmed, Professor Storm is dead.
"Yes, I was to deliver this to her..." and with that Zarbyn produces a rectangular box about 8 inches long and 3 inches wide, "it has information Professor Storm needs for her expedition." he then follows your gaze toward the cairn as some of his initial fears are silently confirmed.

Amdaeng mused, " Well...there are tracks...and signs of an ambush.....the others can probably explain better I was chasing the donkey..."
" I didn't really pay attention to all the gear they collected....I'm certain there's probably something useful in the pile."
