Goblins lie strewn at Vasha’s feet, their bodies crumpled and still. He stands amidst the carnage, chest heaving as he takes a few deep, ragged breaths. The sickly green glow that had overtaken his eyes begins to fade, replaced by his usual calm, albeit strained, expression. His hands loosen slightly around the hilt of his greatsword as the rage subsides, though his muscles remain tense, still on edge from the fight.
He glances at Nyli, wiping the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. “Let’s just grab the old man and get out of here,” he mutters, his voice low but steady.
One by one, you cross the bridge. It holds despite being built by and for goblins. The narrow tunnel curves and you pass by a steep drop-off to your left. The path soon opens up to what must be the Eating Cave.
This large cave is divided in half by a ten-foot-high escarpment. A steep natural staircase leads from the lower portion to the upper ledge. The air is hazy with the pungent from the smell of poorly cured hides and unwashed goblins.
In the lower portion, four goblins have turned over benches to be makeshift barricades. In the upper portion, three more aim shortbows at you. An eighth goblin hides behind your associate, Sildar Hallwinter. Sildar is slumped halfway over the ledge, held up only by this goblin’s grasp. Sildar is bruised, bloody, and barely conscious. The goblin holding him shouts at you as you approach, “Truce, or this human dies!”
If one of you lit a torch:
Sildar’s eyes drift towards the light of your torch, reflecting awareness and recognition. “Don’t trust it, friends,” he groans.
OOC:
Where do you stop? These goblins won't attack right away.
Edit: I forgot the loot. The four goblins you just fought have 16 arrows. One of them also has a Pouch containing a small collection of teeth from various humanoids, including one gold tooth worth 1 Gp.
Vasha enters the chamber and hearing the goblin shout he replies, “Klarg is dead. I’m taking that human and leaving. If you try to stop me you’re dead too. All of you!” he adds, glaring at the goblins fidgeting on his right.
(Intimidation 15)
Unless something happens to stop him, Vasha will march right up the steps and up to Sildar, offering to support the injured man. Throughout the interaction, Vasha remains on high alert, prepared to evade any incoming attacks.
After grabbing 3 arrows from one of the fallen goblins, Dunkin proceeded behind Chase, eventually grabbing some cover in the entrance of the rubble shoot on the left (their exit).
At Vasha’s words, Dunkin hopes to continue and reinforce the bluff by casting Mold Earth to raise a step for Vasha from the floor halfway to Sildar. Hoping he’s believable he yells, “We’re great sorcerers who can mold the elements! Give us the man!”
Nyli grabs 5 arrows and quietly moves into position at the tunnel junction, nocking an arrow and ready to fire at C D or E. Unlike the others she hopes not to be noticed, if a fight breaks out sneaky attacks work nicely.
Doldek momentarily turns back toward the tunnel. In the shadows, he manipulates a bit of fleece, producing the figment of a mangled bugbear's head. He remains silent as he returns to the edge of the chamber, raising the illusory bloody head above his own.
The goblins gasp at the sight of the mangled head. The upstairs ones lower their bows momentarily. They all turn to Yeemik.
Yeemik is looking between the large half-elf striding fearlessly past his defensive lines, coated in goblin blood, and at the other intruders, who are blocking the entrance and holding what could only be the head of his fearsome boss. He ponders, briefly, the ramifications and likely cause of this development and the predicament which now faces him as the presumptive new leader of whatever goblins still live. He makes his decision with haste:
Yeemik releases Sildar. Sildar tumbles over the edge and onto Dunkin's conjured platform, barely conscious but stable. Yeemik shouts, in Goblin, "Run away! Fight your way out!"
The eating cave erupts in a cacophony of screams and shouts as the goblins scramble to follow his orders.
OOC:
It will take a few seconds for these panicked goblins to react to Yeemik's command; you can take the first turn in combat before they try to force their way out of the eating cave and into the tunnel. No need to roll initiative.
Vasha is at the stairs; Sildar is in the same square but now at the bottom of the escarpment instead of the top. The rest of you are near the entrance of the eating cave, from west to east: Doldek, Dunkin, Chase, Nyli, John. Please correct me if your character would be elsewhere.
Nyli, arrow already nocked, draws her bowstring back and launches an arrow at goblin C. Sadly, the goblin bow is not as accurate as her own and the arrow misses. She flings the bow away in disgust and draws her blades.
Vasha's eyes ignite with a green, eerie glow as the familiar surge of rage takes hold, boiling his blood. The defiance of the goblins is the final spark, capping off an already frustrating morning. His vision narrows, and all he can see is the target of his fury—a random goblin caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
(Bonus Action Rage)
With a furious roar, Vasha swings his greatsword in a wide arc, the blade cleaving through the air with brutal precision. The unfortunate goblin barely has time to react before the sheer force of the attack sends it crumpling to the ground, lifeless. Vasha’s breath comes in ragged gasps as he stands over the fallen creature, his muscles trembling from the aftermath of the strike. The green glow still flickers in his eyes as he searches for the next target, his anger far from sated.
From his vantage in the rubble filled chute, Dunkin sees the fear and confusion run through the goblin ranks. He also sees Sildar lying on the conjured step. Taking the opportunity, Dunkin fires an arrow at Goblin C (watching it fall with the arrow buried deep in its breast), then dashes up the step and drawing his scimitar, covers the fallen man.
”Help me drag him outta here, Vasha,” he yells! “We should make for the rubble chute. Reinforcements may be behind us!” The thought of the real Klarg worrying him.
One after another, the goblins fall. Goblin C, pierced through the heart by Dunkin’s arrow, collapses onto the stone floor. Goblin H, boxed in on all four sides, has nowhere to go as Chase’s holy flame descends upon it. Despite the screams surrounding them, Goblins G and I fall peacefully into an unnatural sleep. As Yeemik prepares to jump down the ledge, he is hit by John’s crossbow bolt and stumbles backward. He throws a dagger back at John in return and turns to flee to the back of the cave. The dagger clinks against the cave wall above John's head.
The remaining two goblins see their leader abandon them; they grow panicked and desperate. Goblin F drops its bow, backs up against the cave wall, and swings its scimitar wildly at Vasha. It cuts him deep and lets loose a primal scream. Goblin D, kneeling beside the dying Goblin C, suddenly springs up and shouts, in Goblin, “Fleabeard, I will avenge you!” With tears in its eyes, it slashes at Dunkin. Dunkin falls beside the man he had rushed forward to protect. Sildar does what he can to stop the bleeding.
Doldek, as you reach the top of the gravelly chute, you feel the rubble shift beneath your feet. You can tell right away that anything much heavier than a gnome or goblin would cause the whole thing to collapse in a very dangerous way.
Nyli sees goblin D attack Dunkin and charges to his defence. Screaming "Prepare to meet your friend in hell!" she lunges with her shortsword, piercing through armour and flesh. As she pulls the blade free the goblin D drops to the floor, dead. She spins around looking for another target.
