Once Chipper finishes casting his ritual, Kess will head to the other locked door with no scratching behind it. "Let's see how I do this time." She attempts to unlock it with thieves' tools.

The door unlocks into a library. This room is crawling with cats. Bookshelves hug the walls, but most of the shelves are bare. Other furnishings include a desk, a chair, a table, and a wine cabinet. The room has an irregular shape, and none of its angles seem quite right, as though the shifting of the house has set the whole place on edge. There are eight cats in total. One has a key around its neck.

Kessintra's eyes immediately lock onto the key. "Can one of you distract that one? I'll try to sneak up and swipe the key."

Chipper uses minor illusion to create the image of a stuffed mouse accompanied with the sound of squeak to attract the cat's attention.

Kessintra does her best to move silently over to the distracted feline and snatch the key without it noticing.

If that fails, Garrick will attempt his mage hand

The cat eyes all dart to the mouse. They start creeping up on the illusion. Kessintra is able to grab the key just before they pounce. 

The cats all pile on top of one another, fighting to reach the coveted 'mouse'. Then, when one finally reached for it, all the cat can do is look up in despair as the cats realize. They've been bamboozled. All of them look as if they're having an existential crisis. You swear that some of them are crying.

"A lifetime of grace and agility, wasted on chasing things that don’t exist. Truly, an inspiration to us all."

Razz will look around the library after his snarky comment about the cats.

Kessintra chuckles, twirling her prize in her hand proudly. "Don't be so harsh on them, Razz. It is fun to sneak attack things. Now to find the lock this goes to...assuming it isn't just the chest in the other room." She goes to check the desk and wine cabinet for locked compartments.

Perception: 17

There's no locked compartments in the desk and wine cabinet. Both of you, however, find that a section of the bookshelf that stretches along the southernmost wall is actually on hidden hinges. Behind the hinged panel in the bookcase lies a dusty, ten-foot-square room with a curtained window and shelves lining three walls. On the bottom shelf rests an iron chest. The other shelves are bare.

“Try the key on this chest. No idea why they’d keep it on a cat. Insane indeed.”

"Hm, secret room and a secret chest," Kessintra murmurs with faint excitement. She will take a better look around the room for traps before heading inside to unlock the chest.

Perception: 14 (or 17 with help)

The chest is armed with a similar trap to the last one. Otherwise, there are no traps.

Kess will unlock and open the chest, hoping it isn't just cat toy storage.

The chest holds:

• A silk bag containing 180 ep, each coin bearing Strahd’s stern visage in profile
• A leather bag containing 110 gp
• A wooden pipe
• Five scrolls—notarized deeds for parcels of land given to the Watcher family by Count Strahd von Zarovich. They seem to be several centuries old.
• A supple leather case containing an unbound manuscript titled The Devil We Know—a recently written poetic manifesto written by attesting that the worship of devils can bring happiness, success, freedom, wealth, and longevity
• A blasphemous treatise bound in black leather titled The Grimoire of the Four Quarters
• A very old letter addressed to Lady Lovina Watcher from one Lord Vasili von Holtz, thanking Lovina for her hospitality, loyalty, and friendship over the years

"Oh shiny. Looks like that's the only thing of interest back here.  Such a pity.  With this much space and all these shelves, I thought we were going to find more than just a small chest." Razz says to Garrick and Kess, almost with a pout.

Kess' eyes widen at the sight. "It's...not nothing. And not a skeleton." She can hardly contain her excitement as they look through the chest, particularly the deeds. "Hah, it looks like we're all landowners now!"
