You recall some of the history of this region. Many years ago in the Year of the Shattered Scepter, orc hordes attacked the realm of Phalorm. The only remaining remnants of Phalorm were protected in Iniarv’s Tower. To prevent the orcs from wiping out their forces, King Uth VII allied with a powerful Lich. As a cruel joke, the lich brought in the ocean waters to drown the orcs. Many orc died but all humans perished. The remaining orc retreated into the sword mountains to later found the realm of Uruth Ukrypt. Your party can see bone remennants of fallen orc on both sides of the road.

You remember some lore of Thornhold. Once this fortress was the property of a local warlord named Brunyundar Margaster. He was eventually overthrown by Samular Carradoon. The keep has mostly been in the Carradoon family other than a short seizure by the Zhentarim. Once a chapterhouse for the Knights of Samular. Currently the fortress is run by the dwarves of Clan Stoneshaft who transformed it into a caravan stop for traders about to brave the stretch of the High Road bordering the Mere.
“We are here. If any of you be paladin, step forward and be recognized.” Comes a thickly dwarves accent.
The Thornhold is a plain gray stone fort with a central keep possessing two towers. Evenly-spaced arrow slits are the only things that break up the stone on the sides of the heavy gate.

Ian says to Tyrus, “ If they are asking about paladins, maybe they can give us more information about the shield. Or maybe they need your help with something. Have you ever heard of the Knights of Samular?”
The Dwarf inside says “no one enters without inspection. We have had a problem with undead creatures trying to get inside. With the sun setting, we are not taking chances. Please remove your armor and garments on your upper body, place weapons on the ground and step up to the gate.”

Ian places his breastplate and bow on the ground and strides to the gate. “If you wanted to get a better look at me, maybe buy me dinner first.” He says with a grin.
As Ian and Arafiel approach the gate, a Dwarf from the top of the wall pours some holy water on the two heroes. Seeming content with those two he says, “Thank you fine sirs. The two of you may gather your items. Who will be next?”
