"Sinruth? The name isn't familiar to me. Yes, the artifacts are memorabilia of the war with the original conflict those ten years ago."
He then turns his head to a figure that has so far been hidden in the shadows. "My associate Galorash will accompany you. He knows the lay of the land and will be most useful in navigating the wilderness in reaching your destination."
(OOC: We have a new party member; welcome Galorash the forest gnome rogue!)
"I guess I can ask the Hob-Gob. But the fact that they stole specific items related to the war adds substance to my theory that this new warband has some connection to the one from ten years ago. What about the abductees? Any shared traits?" The Half-Elf stops his questioning for a moment to smile and extend his silver-scaled right arm to the forest gnome. "Welcome aboard. Name's Mikhael Frostmoon. Pleasure to meet you."
((HP: 13 I hope I did that right. +2 from Con Mod and +2 from Tough. EDIT: I will roll with the next level up and keep this one. DnDBeyond is not letting me change the HP to 23 lol.))
Jakob, who has just been listening silently, nods to the gnome. "Name's Jakob."
"I could try to intimidate him. If that fails I could try freezing his feet... Hey, Medskan, don't paladins have the power to tell if someone's lying? Any other ideas? Hell, does anyone here speak goblin?"
A Gnome stands before you (who looks very much like his character icon), constantly alert and looking among you quickly as if making a mental inventory for a few seconds. He looks to the largest of the group and directs a bright smile to you and states "Galorash at your service!"
OOC I do not speak hobgoblin, but can I determine anything about it just by looking it over? I can cast a minor illusion to make myself look fiendish to him but look first for clues as to what he may fear.
(Ya'll haven't gotten to the hobgoblin yet, but I suppose now is a good time to get ya'll there.)
You are escorted by the guards to the town green outside the jailhouse.
Just as the guards said, there’s a lone hobgoblin in stocks and shackles here. His wounds from last night’s battle have been bandaged, but a number of tomatoes on the ground near him and on the surface of the stocks indicate that his treatment hasn’t been completely kind.
He takes one weary look at you and says, “I ain’t saying nothin’ unless you people let me go.”
A guard takes you aside, outside of the hobgoblin's hearing, and gives some friendly advice: "Goblins are cowards at heart, and if you start breaking fingers or whatever, they'll say anything to make the pain stop. You'll just get a bunch of lies. Threats are one thing, but don't get too physical with him."
Galorash looks disappointedly at the tomatoes on the ground, the hobgoblins cuts and bandages, then tries to catch the hobgoblin's eye with a sympathetic look. "Of course you will be let go! (deception) As you can understand we don't want any more of you just terrorizing the town, you obviously need something from us - perhaps you can tell us where you come from so we can negotiate some sort of trade in exchange for peace from your attacks." (OOC Think used car salesman)

(Rolls for persuasion, deception, intimidation, insight and history might be fruitful, if you ask the right questions.)
what language is he speaking? Common or gnome if i understand him
The hobgoblin said what he said in common.
Jakob whispers to the group. "Maybe scare him? Break some fingers? Bust his nose?"
