The barmaid tells you the exciting news about the ship that has come all the way from the southern continent. A very rare event way up here in the north. She tells you the Captain is very mysterious and the rumors say he is part Djini or something of that nature. The captain and some of his crew are supposed to be coming to this tavern at 4, they will be setting up a recruiting table to fill vacancies and after that business is done, you can begin at that time to celebrate. She ekgs you know the ship is moored in the harbor if you wanted to get a peek at it.
I would thank the barmaid before running out of the bar towards the docks, I planned to try to get onboard the ship before performing thst night, I wanted to check the ships conditions and what it had on it.
Kel makes his way down to the beach, the smell of the salt air, the chattering of the sea birds great him. The fog is still pretty heavy so you cannot see very far, but you easily find your way up onto the docks. It isnt bard for you to identify the ship from the south from its distinctive sail shape and almost black appearance. It has pulled into the largest slip available and seems already in the process of offloading cargo. As you approach closer, you see you are not the only one eager to get a closer look. You see that redscaled lizard guy from the tavern, really studying the ship and cargo. He sees you and says, “ well hello there small bard. Fantastic performance last night. It has been a while since the Cutlass had any decent music. My name is Zerk, whats yours?” He says with a smile as he offers his hand.
I look up at zerk, seeing their red scaled figure. "Im Kel- Kel Mudscale, thanks for noticing the performance, I wasnt sure if I was playing right- you are the captain of this ship right?" He would shake your hand.
“ Captain? Oh no, i am just your average Luskan skallywag. I am just admiring this beautiful, and strange ship. You just missed them cutting down some corpses they had hanging from the bow sprit. Quite the dramatic entrance. I believe the Captain of this vessel goes by the name of Naraan or something similar. The dock master says he is planning on a reception and recruitment at the Cutlass today, so that should be interesting .”
Zerk speaks freely with no attempt to dampen his enthusiasm for this ship. As you both stand there chatting, the fog begins to clear out and you are able to get a truly good look. The shop is shaped similarly to a caravel with high back and forecastle. What seemed to be jet black planking turns out is writing of some sort burned into the planks across the entire ship. A long and elegant cursive scrip of unknown origin. On the deck Zerk spots an intriguing figure monitoring the offloading process. A stunning beauty of a woman. At least from this distance. Jet black, wavy hair, bronze skin and an interesting recurved bow made from horns of some animal on her back. In her hand she is carrying a trident of some sort. Every so often she barks orders in an unfamiliar language, directing the workers where to go and what to carry. For a moment Zerk seems to get lost in the pleasure of looking at her.
Kel would nod as he was also admiring the maiden, his kobold self had a weak spot for women in particular. He would see if there was any latches small enough to climb onto the ship.
As you start looking for less conspicuous place to climb on, Zerk will nod in approval but say, “ we should go up the main plank and ask the Lady in charge, I have a feeling she keeps a good watch and from the bodies they took down, they probably don’t tolerate sneaking well, “ he says with a laugh. The two of you head over to the gangway and wait a moment for some of the workers to pass by. This lot seems to be hauling out some fancy carpets or tapestries. Very intricate designs from what you can see and bold, bright coloring unlike anything you have ever seen here in Faerun. They seem to be made entirely of silk and must cost quite a bit.
Soon you have an opening to move up the plank where you are greeted by the woman. Even more beautiful up close. Her clothing is all brightly color silks with leather armor pieces. Her eyes are an intense blue and now that you are close you can see they are serpentine eyes, and she has random splotches of what looks like scales here and there. Very subtle. Of course this makes her even more enticing to you both, being scaled folk.
In a thickly accented common, she asks you, “. What can i help you fellowsss with on this fine morning?” You think you see sort of a split tongue and her S’s seem to linger a little as she speaks.”
Zerk was just about to open the conversation when Kel jumped right in. Perhaps directness combine with small and cute would be the correct entry he thinks to himself.
The woman was just about to immediately deny you, but then softened a bit. “ Perhapss an introduction prior to special requestsss…I am Lagazara, quartermaster of the Gallowss Dancer. Whom might you gentlemen be? “
This time Zerk gets in before Kel and says, “ my lady, I am Zerk Sseaz and this is my good friend Kel Mudscale, a quite talented bard and lover of sailing vessels.”
Lagazara looks the two men over for a little, considering the request. She then calls out for human fellow named Johnson. “ Mr Johnson here will escort you about the upper deck for a little tour. It is against Captains orders for non-crew to go below decks. The Captain will be holding a recruiting at a tavern called the cutlass tonight, should you wish to replace the unfortunate souks lost on the journey. I have works to do, so please enjoy the tour and maybe we will see you at the signing this evening..” the scraggy looking human approaches and says “ right this way boys, the Gallows Dancer is the greatest ship ever to sail these waters. A rare treat for lubbers like you”
During the tour, Johnson points out a lot of intricately carved detailing and gives an outlandish history of the ship and crew’s exploits. Epic encounters and godlike status of the captain, helps you conclude it is likely a yarn. Johnson seems well practiced at giving such tours and recounting the tales, possibly a bit of a bard himself. The whole tour Kel and Zerk feel as if they are being watched, even as they depart the ship. Well educated without knowing anymore than they did at the start. Seems the two will gave to await the signing this evening
Inside the tower, Thagal is directed past the gift shops to an elderly elvish woman at a desk. She asks him his business and he hands her the letter Mr Fist provided him the night before. “ Ahh, you seek the Iron Wizard. Take the west branch stairway to the top and his assistant will meet you there” she says as she points towards the end of the west wall. The layout of the base of the tower is a simple cross design with gifts shops on each branch and different colored tiles for each section of the cross. The central cube is an immaculate white tile and everything is brightly lit by magical means.
Thagal thanks the woman and heads down the hall, noting all the details of the unnatural construction. Clearly this tower was built entirely via arcane means. Not a single flaw, chip or tool marking to be found. Looks like it was grown straight from the rock. When he gets to the stairs and looks upward, his enthusiasm immediately dissipates. The staircase winds up to the top of the tower, it appears there is no floor between the base and the top. It seems thousands of steps to climb.
” Ugghhh, wizards and their towers..” he grumbles as he begins the arduous journey up, expecting its going to take an hour or more. Fortunately after having made two or three revolutions up the winding stairs he found himself suddenly at the top where he is met by a halfling fellow in green robes.
” Welcome Friend, Master Kutoti Irongrass will see you now.” The halfling leads Thagal to some large pillow like chairs and soon as Thagal sits down, a tall Dark skinned human wearing green robes appears in the cushy seat across from him.
” Welcome to the host tower Mr Thagal. I understand you are interested in access to our library. I can see what tome you are seeking, but not the purpose for which you intend the knowledge contained within.”
Thagal, visibly uncomfortable with the thought reading, will respond, “ a thirst for knowledge i have had since my youth. Nothing more and nothing less. What is the procedure for a man like myself to gain access to such knowledge?”
” The procedure is simple really, you must be an accepted brother. Unfortunately, the tower doesn’t not allow persons of tainted magic types to join. Your power is not yours, it is subject to an entity…”
the Iron Wizard looks over Thagal thoughtfully, seemingly looking into his very essence.
” is there nothing I can do to get an exception to the rule? A donation perhaps?” Thagal will ask, heavy on the hinting.
After a moment, Kutoti will answer, “ i do detect some true magic spark within you. I could take you on as an apprentice in true wizard craft, then you could access the book you desire. First though i need for you to prove your value. I need you to recover an artifact for me. It is not an easy task and the journey is long. This artifact is outside of Faerun. Complete this task and I Kutoti Irongrass will accept you as apprentice and as a member of the Arcane Brotherhood.”
Thagal thinks a moment, wondering if there is some trickery or deception before deciding. He has to get into that book, his benefactor has explicitly ordered him to do it. His first such order, in fact. “ i agree, i will recover this artifact for you and become your most talented apprentice “
Kutoti will produce a small parchment scroll from thin air and hand it to Thagal. “ Good luck on your journey and keep the nature of your quest secret. Good day Thagal”
Soon as Thagal grasped the scroll he found himself outside the tower at the entrance, where Goermond was waiting for him….
The tavern is brightly lit with extra oil lamps tonight so everyone can get a better view. The Captain’s table is set in the center of the room with a long, shinny linen runner on the floor where the potential recruits will stand for evaluation and signing of the contract. Currently the Captain is in a back room with Mr. Fist Scarsguard, the owner and 2nd in command for the third ship of Luskan. Standing next to the table, holding a large harpoon/ flag pole bearing the ships flag for the Gallows Dancer, is a bare chested Minotaur. Covered in tattoos that are intertwining lightning bolts making various knotwork patterns. He stands silent and still as death itself. This would be the Ships bosun named Hotep, and he seems like he keeps an orderly ship. On the other end of the table, sitting on its edge is a gorgeous woman with bronze skin and snake-like eyes. Her black hair is covered in a white silken hood. She seems much more casual than the bosun, but extremely alert. She seems to be scanning everyone in the room, calculating. She is Lagazara, the ship’s quartermaster and the one who will evaluate the potential recruits.
Little Kel Mudscale is set up to play on the west wall nook once the business has been attended. Sitting near by is his new friend, the red lizardman Zerk. How can’t take his eye’s off of Lagazara. Truly a stunning creature, he thinks to himself, and he ha made up his mind to join the crew.
Throgg enters the Cutlass Tavern ready to drown his sorrows in ale once more. “Why do people need to be so stupid all the time!” He thinks to himself. Once again he had to punch some idiot in the face because he had the balls to demand payment for the food Throgg ate. “I didn’t even order the food, I took it off that human’s plate so he clearly ordered it and whoever orders has to pay!” If the human didn’t want Throgg to eat the food, he would’ve punched me in the face to stop me… why didn’t that stupid little shop owner understand that? Hopefully soon he can find some new shipmates and leave this dreadful place.
To anyone looking at the entrance when Throgg walks in, they’ll see a tall, dirty, hairy Bugbear with a long face that often shows confusion and bewilderment. His hands hang well past his waist when his arms are down by his side. A none to pleasant smell also comes from him. He doesn’t seem to possess any weapons except a small crossbow.
When the bugbear steps away from the tavern’s door, another person is revealed, who must have entered in the wake of the long-armed creature. The newcomer is slight of build, and was content to stand completely hidden for a moment as he quickly took in his surroundings.
The postured stance of the tabaxi the tavern patrons now see, with the upward tilt of his head, suggest an aristocratic upbringing. As does his garb, comprised of a fine olive-green pin-striped coat, gray vest over a delicate linen button-front shirt with flaring collar, dusty-mauve scarf, pantaloons, leather belts, and cufflinks to match, all, to a knowing eye, tailored specifically to his form. His rapier and dagger pair are finely wrought as well and hang easily from his hips.
The tabaxi steps forward confidently, raises a hand to draw the barkeeper’s attention, and in a friendly tenor that puts others at ease with its uncanny resonance and fluidity of speaking, calls for “A tankard of grog, my friend, or rum with water if you’ve no citrus… I’ll be sailing soon and may as well get a head start on the libations.” He spies the captain’s table and moves closer to the barkeep, dropping coins on the counter for his drink. “Is that the erm… captain’s table, for the erm… ship that’s setting sail in the morning?” He has no idea whether a ship is leaving in the morning, or even if a captain is hiring at all. But leaving town quickly is a priority, so a shot in the dark is well worth the risk.

One of the serving girls you are familiar with approaches and welcomes you back to the cutlass. She notices you are a little aggravated and being understanding of your situation will treat you warmly and guide you towards the bar for your usual brew. She lets you know the Captain will be appearing soon and that a great opportunity will be offered. It just might be your lucky day, a chance to get back out on the open seas, where your talents shine.
Throgg’s spirit rises. A new recruitment? Hopefully this one goes better than the last. The last captain had said he was too dull, but that made no sense. His crossbow bolts were sharp and his claws sharper. He almost showed the captain how sharp his claws were when one of the nice drink-servers came over and offered him a free ale on the other side of the tavern.
Accepting his ale and putting a coin on the bar, for he ordered it and the one that orders, pays, he sits and waits for the captain. “Please don’t let this captain be stupid”, he thinks.
One of the barmaids is quick to bring the fancy looking Tabaxi a tankard of rum and answers his question.
“ why yes, the Captain is in deliberations with Mr Fist and some strange gnome. He should be out shirtless to begin the Proceedings. Tis’ a strange looking ship with a scary reputation. I think a fella like you will have an easy go at a position “ she says with a wink.
the rum is fairly harsh and must be a locally distilled variety. In the background the little orange Kobold Kel is playing a light tune while everyone waits the excitement of the recruiting. The locals know often times fights break out during these. Some folks just don’t handle rejection well. The look on the Minotaur’s face says no such thing will be tolerated during this one.
