Hi there! If you're still looking for players I'd love to join. I haven't ever played one of these post by post campaigns, but it seems fantastic!
Name: Caspian Ozfire
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock (Pact of the Chain, Fiendish Patron)
Background: Haunted One
Bonus Feat: Elemental Adept (choosing fire as the kind of damage)
Backstory: Caspian always strove to help those in need as he grew up in a small village hardly deserving of a name on the borderlands. His parents left him at the doorstep of two elderly farmers as they were traveling in the night. Despite his appearance, the old couple quickly grew to appreciate his positivity and curiosity. However, it was clear that as far as the rest of the little village was concerned, he could not be trusted. He was nonetheless determined to try to get people to accept him. Working as a clerk at the local library, he often helped children learn to read. However, when a devastating war broke out and peace was shattered, chaos consumed the simple life he knew. Bandits arrived at the town, taking advantage of the chaos of the war to threaten and raid our village. During this time, he came across a black leather-bound book that had been hidden under a board in the storage room. It detailed a ritual that would unlock immense power at a dear price. He was considering it but decided that it would have to wait until he could further research the text. However, on the way back home to the farm, the bandits threatened to kill a child when we wouldn't tell them where the last of our food was hidden. He chanted the ritual and time seemed to stop as something in the corner of his eye made a pact with him. Black iron broken manacles that had spikes digging into his skin like barbed wire served as a physical reminder of his debt. With this new power, he made a stand. The bandits ran off, but upon arriving home to an open door and a broken window, he saw that he had been too late to save his elderly parents. He is now pursuing the captain of those bandits across the lands with his pseudodragon companion to enact justice for the senseless murder. But, deep down he is still an optimistic young kid trying to do his best with these powers. He knows that after his time is up, then he doesn't have a lot to look forward to, so he wants to do the best he can while he's here.
Lifestyle: Poor
Faith: Believes that the Sovereign host are real. He feels a special connection to Boldrei, yet he is sure they won't have anything to do with him.
Debt: His actual soul. His deal often leads him to be twisted and not himself in combat, behaving cruelly to enemies.
Phobia: Losing himself to the darkness he now carries. He can feel the change when he's caught up in a fight, and it scares him how good it feels to draw blood and cause pain. But more mundanely he also is terrified of drowning, as in the early day on the farm he was walking on a fallen tree over a river and lost his footing. He got swept away into a section of rapids and was nearly drowned before he managed to fight his way to the other side.
Random NPC: Claurus Dirkwood - The leader of the bandits from Caspian's past. He now seems to have set up a small criminal operation in the Sharn, if the rumors Caspian has been following are right that is.
If I want to post my warlock's character info, will I have to get rid of Hayden? I like his aesthetic and backstory, but I also want to write down this other concept. I'm losing sleep over this. No hyperbole.
Here is my warlock concept. If Hayden didn't strike your fancy, I hope Edric does. I designed him to focus heavily on the "psychic powers" aspect of the Quori. Same with his fear. Whereas Hayden could pull of melee, Edric is pure magic.
Name: Edric the Nightwalker (Full name Edric Hannibal Aramis)
Race: Tiefling
Class: Warlock (Great Old One patron) Pact of the Tome.
Background: Haunted One
Bonus Feat: War Caster
Backstory: I grew up in Venomous Demesne, a magical kingdom beyond Droaam. For much of my youth I suffered from horrific night terrors, and not even the greatest mages of my home could find a cause. I began to fear the very act of falling asleep, simply because of the dreams I knew would come. In my desperation for respite I turned to the Lords of the Dream World, the Quori, for aid. My pleas were heeded by Benzagogoth, a powerful and ambitious Kalaraq Quori (pretty much a dream demon resembling a 6-foot tall shadowy humanoid with a ring of disembodied eyes orbiting it). The Eyebinder offered not only to halt my dreams, but to grant me power as well. In return, I would need to aid him in usurping the nightmare throne of Dal Quor for himself. I agreed to his terms and no longer dream, unless Benzagogoth has information or orders for me. Dragonshards play into his plan somehow, but the details are a mystery to me. I began wearing a ring of mind shielding after I learned Eyebinders can steal souls. (And because I don't like interacting with the horrible psionic crab-worms Benzagogoth uses as messengers. I've seen enough Tsucoras and Usavapnas to last a lifetime.) I found my way to Sharn through a mixture of odd jobs and Benzagogoth's orders. I have been observing and studying ever since. I am currently a student of Advanced Psionic Theory at Silverspire College of Magecraft, writing a term paper about the Quori, their culture, and their abilities.
Debt: I am bound to the inscrutable agenda of my Patron, a Kalaraq Quori known as Benzagogoth the Nightmare Sovereign. He desires the dragonshards for his plan to claim the nightmare throne. (And prevent his rivals from doing the same).
Faith: The Quori. I'm not happy about it, but they're real.
Random NPC: Moloch Bedman, a kalashtar merchant who also serves Benzagogoth. He sells rare imported metals from Riedra and keeps Edric informed as to the movements of the Inspired.
If any of those monster names need explanation, I have pictures.
I have filled out as much of his sheet as I can, but I lack access to the Great Old One Pact, and some of the other details like invocations and spells. If asked I could provide his spell list.
Let me know if I did anything wrong with character creation. I was very careful, but I may have missed something. I hope you are still accepting new players, this sounds like such an awesome campaign!
If you could keep to one entry it would make things much easier on my behalf. If everyone posted all of their ideas there'd be no end to the recruitment post. If you have a preferred character, can you edit the other character's post and put a note at the top saying to disregard that one.
Your character looks fine, and don't worry I plan to be as flexible as I can and help anyone if they have any queries or questions. All they need to do is ask.
NOTICE: THERE IS AROUND 36 HOURS BEFORE APPLICATIONS CLOSE. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS SUBMITTED SO FAR. I WISH I COULD RUN A CAMPAIGN FOR EVERYONE, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE TOO HIGH MAINTENANCE TO DO SOLO.
Ultimately, I'll have to go with Edric. Mainly because of how work went into him and how I built him specifically for Eberron, for this Campaign. Hayden found his place elsewhere. Edric, meanwhile, has a lot of lore specifically for this setting.
I decided to scrap my initial character that I submitted (Sojourner) and go with Jacen. My first character just didn't seem to have the feel that would work for this campaign. Therefore I present...
Name: Jacen Darkvalour
Race: Human (Variant)
Class: Rogue 1/Grave Cleric 4
Background: Criminal/Spy
Bonus Feat: Aberrant Dragonmark
Backstory: Born in Cyre, Jacen’s father went off to fight in The War and died before Jacen could even walk which left him alone with a young mother who did her best to keep him feed and clothed. Jacen would often accompany his mother to the inn in which she worked. During those years, Jacen was exposed to a number of colorful individuals in that were coming and going for any number of reasons. He also found that he had a surprising knack for finding things and talking folks into doing things for him or slipping things from folk were less than aware of their surroundings. He also learned to get really good at deception after one fateful afternoon…
When Jacen was in his teens an aberrant dragonmark appeared upon his left shoulder and the day it made its appearance, he nearly burned another child’s face off with a gout of flame during a fight. His mother explained to him the danger of the mark and what it might mean should anyone find out about it; a feat not made easy as the older Jacen became the larger the mark grew. It started as a small design near his left shoulder blade, but slowly began to expand onto his shoulder and then began to wind and coil down his arm. The larger the mark became, the more difficult it was to hide it with clothing and more volatile his powers were becoming. After his errant powers caused a fire that destroyed several homes, he made a decision that would ultimately save his life. He left home behind and journeyed to Metrol where he partnered with a thief’s guild in hopes of keeping himself hidden within the underbelly of the city and finding funds to better disguise his mark.
Jacen was able to find a trustworthy tattoo artist in the city that had paid a large sum to incorporate a serpentine-like dragon tattoo design around the crimson dragonmark. It was costly and painful, but it helps him to disguise the mark. Unfortunately the jobs he took with the guild that allowed him to obtain the funds for the tattoo ultimately led him into irons and he found himself faced with a difficult choice; prison or military service. Jacen had no particular desire to follow in his father’s untimely demise, but he would at least have some freedoms there and a better chance of escaping his fate with the later. With his set of skills, Jacen was placed with a small team of scouts and spies behind the lines in Karrnath. It was there he saw firsthand the strange, necromantic army of Karrnath. After witnessing several deaths and being frustrated by his inability to help his companions, Jacen spent time with one of the battlefield healers he had known and learned several important skills from her. He put those skills to great use during his infiltration missions in Karrnath.
Even before The Mourning, Jacen had never had much national pride and felt that The War was a massive failure of the upper echelons of leaders to protect their people, but after that day… He stared off at the ruins of his home and what he knew was the death of his family and walked away from it all. Never again would he get tangled up into the Wars of others. He would walk his own path and make his own choices. He had always heard of the great city of Sharn, a place were someone like him to hide from it all and be the person he wanted to be. It was a long journey through the war-torn country-side, but he eventually made his way there to start a new life.
Debt: When Jacen was new to Sharn, he inadvertently started some trouble in The Feisty Dragon tavern with a local thug. The tavernkeeper, Maltharn, for some reason took pity on the young man and called in a favor to save his life. Jacen vowed he would repay that favor and now Maltharn had called in the favor. His adopted niece had taken ill and he needed coin to provide the care she needed; a lot of coin.
Uncommon Item:Mithral Armor – Breastplate (Paying the 400gp for the cost of the armor as mentioned in the recruitment thread!)
Lifestyle: Comfortable
Phobia: Fear of losing control; specifically of his dragonmark and causing another terrible calamity like he once did.
Random NPC: Maltharn Trueblood, a dwarven brewmaster that runs a tavern in the Middle Ward of Tavick’s Landing; The Feisty Dragon. Maltharn is Jacen’s contact in the city and allows the young man to run a forgery business for those coming in and out of the city.
Additional: One of the ways that Jacen hides his aberrant dragonmark is through mundane ways of masking the mark partially with a large tattoo that incorporates the mark, but also by keeping it covered most always with long sleeved clothing. As far as being able to use his powers without drawing too much attention, he learned from the Wandslingers he saw in The War and picked up a wand that he always carries with him. Anytime he plans to use his dragonmark powers (which is not very often), he will always have his wand in hand.
Backstory: Dalin doesn't remember much of his first few years. What he does remember is hunger and pain. It all changed when he was 6 and started working as an errant boy on the docks of a Cannith enclave. One day after watching the magewright do their trade he began to replicate their cantrips. That caught the attention of an ambitious man, Armand Fal’Cannith who decide to take him under his wing. For years the two worked together Armand training the youth in magic but also grooming him to become a tool completely dedicated to the House, and to him in particular.
Dalin has been helping his master moving up in the political maelstrom of House Cannith and making him more powerful, acquiring lost lore and magical items.
Dalin has killed for his master and though it was never asked it was implied and never spoken of.
For reason unknown to him, a year ago, Dalin has been placed in Sharn and doing chores and jobs far below his skills. He remains loyal but fears that he has been discarded or become useless.
Debt: House Cannith trained him and he owes them, (Armand Fal’Cannith in particular)
Random NPC: Atlan Desmond: He is your contact in Sharn and tells you what you need to do for the House. He has a shop, working for House Cannith, and selling simple mechanical things.
Alternate ID
Ith Kanan: Probably the identity Dalin uses the most, to a point where he forgets sometimes which is which. Ith is a carpenter for hire who works on the docks of Sharn repairing damaged ships. He is from Cyre, now the Mournland, and never speaks of his past. Big and strong with piercing blue eyes and straw blond eyes he is a known figure of the docks now.
Ban Hurlan: Small, wiry and twitchy to the point of it becoming suspicious Ban works in the lower part of society. He moves in those circles like a fish in a pond. He originates from Thrane.
He's right, brother. Elliott's backstory is very barebones lol. It gives the DM more freedom to weave a plot hook through my backstory or something else that good DMs do lol
With four pages of submission, frankly no one has a very good chance, but you might be one of the lucky ones!

Debt: House Cannith trained him and he owes them, (Armand Fal’Cannith in particular)
Faith: The Sovereign Host
Common Item: Feather Token (Feather Fall)
Uncommon Item: Medallion of Thoughts
Lifestyle: Modest
Phobia: Being left without a family to serve.

This is some stiff competition. Dunno how Edric measures up. Are there any improvements I could make to him?

That’s what she said.
@CrispyDM
Hehehe. Double entendres. I see. Dick jokes notwithstanding, is there anything I could do to improve edric's backstory or character.

@Nederic
Don't worry about it. Put what you want to put down. The game is for your characters, not mine. I'd rather build around other people's things :-)
He's right, brother. Elliott's backstory is very barebones lol. It gives the DM more freedom to weave a plot hook through my backstory or something else that good DMs do lol
Kandalou Dle'tan - Level 9 Githyanki Fighter (Champion) - Rrakkma PbP
Thanks, I feel a lot better now. Edric might actually have a chance. I actually gave him an origin point and a lot more possible contacts.

With four pages of submission, frankly no one has a very good chance, but you might be one of the lucky ones!

DM for Reavers of Harkenwold, and sometimes The Fighting Grounds of the Coliseum
Yeah but we still got our fingers crossed and hope we are one of the lucky Chosen Ones.
