"Well, that's unfortunate. I guess you can't pay us now." I stuff my Bedroll and Blanket into my Backpack. "I suppose you want us to find it, no? Someone slipped past the person on watch, which I find unlikely, or one of us had it. I don't know about any of you, but if I had taken the gold, I would not be here, but as far from here as possible. You three has reputations and jobs to retain, so I can see why you're still here." I say that last part looking at the Dragonborn. But I look at Leo and Cleo, "These two aren't smart enough to do this." I look at the rest of the group and sigh, a clear look of disappointment and frustration on my face. I kick the ground subconsciously, and my right forearm unthreateningly rests on the hilt of my dueling rapier.
This is the first time I've not been wearing my cloak, and you notice that my rapier rests on my right, rather than my left; I wear a black dueling glove on my left hand; a set of manacles hangs on my left hip; and a coil of rope is looped into my belt in the back; a small silk bag hangs by the right thigh.

I look up at the Dragonborn and I can't help but laugh, the first time I've seen to show any emotion, really. I look around, seeing everyone is still here, and I shrug. "I'm not doing this for gold and everyone is still here.. Which tells me the gold was taken out from under our noses, which i find improbable.. unless.." the elf sniffs at the air.. "Unless someone put us all to sleep long enough to steal the gold and run off?"

"Magic could be involved," Stardust on Stone says. "It must be involved. My watch was quiet, and I was in the back of the wagon the entire time. Could one of us have put it in a magic bag? But the chest had to heavy. Is it here but invisible?"

Tool looks visibly nervous when the missing gold is mentioned. "Uhm... Sorry, I should've also stayed up and watched." They meekly say to the group.
When the possibility of magic is mentioned, Tool perks up. "Magic? I can detect if there was magic involved!" Tool chirps excitedly as they pull out their large spellbook. "Although, it will take me a few minutes to figure it out."
Tool draws a magical circle in the dirt, props their spellbook down on said circle, and begins muttering strange incantations. This goes on for around ten minutes.
Cleo and Leo say in unison "Hey" when Li questions their intelligence, but don't say anything else. "The chest is definitely not in the wagon" Leo adds.
Stardust on Stone, the area around the wagon and your campground is a jumble of horse and footprints, the rain soften ground doesn't help shed any clues. About 30 feet away, you do find one set up footprints heading into the woods.
Tool finishes the ritual spell, and detects a very light enchantment on Dorai, possibly a protection spell of some kind, but it's unclear. No other magic is detected.
Dorai looks at Tool and gives a slight shrug, "In warmth, abundance, and vitality, may we find our sanctuary" he offers to the Kenku as explanation, and begins to perform his own search of the area, ending at the footsteps Stardust on Stone had found leading into the forest.
"Only one set of prints," Stardust on Stone says. He squats next to them. His tail thrashes the wet grass. "How many did it take to load the chest?" he asks Dorai.
He shows the others what he has found. Stardust investigates the footprints. He wonders if they are of boots or bare feet, how large they are, and if he can tell what kind of creature or thing made them. Investigation: 2
"I grew up in the city. Any of you know anything about nature? Any one want to guess what made the track?"
"I do not know how many coins were in it, and it wasn't too large of a chest. Any creature with average strength should've been able to carry it, with a bit of effort" Dorai says.
[The footprints appear to be made by a booted, medium sized creature.]
Sairn approaches the boot print, looks at Doral and the rest of the party, he sniffs the air. "it could be anyone here with an accomplice.. but I doubt it.. A Goblin perhaps? Too large a print to be a dwarf.. " Sairn straightens, his pointed ears wilt.. "it could of course be an elf, but we usually aren't greedy like that without taking something else...I say we follow the prints.. We aren't likely to get paid if we lose the cargo, right?"
“I am ready for the forest and whatever thief has my pay,” Stardust on Stone says. “Can you two be trusted with the wagon?” he says to the gnomes. “We could take the horses in with us. A few days rations also,” he says to the others.
Leo and Cleo look offended with the accusation, "Of course we can be trusted, and the horses stay here, you're not dragging them into the woods! Go find the chest, we'll wait, or else no one gets paid!
The four of you begin to follow the tracks. You notice that the tracks head towards the camp, and then away into the trees you're entering. The latter set of prints seems to sink a bit deeper into the wet earth, evidence of being... heavier?
You enter the woods; the scent of wet leaves and blooming flowers greets you. After a few minutes, Sairn notices a second set of footprints, showing signs that their owner may have spent some time waiting here. You continue on, swatting at the occasional mosquito, following the two sets of prints for about 10 minutes, at which point you come to a small river. The tracks appear to turn north and hug the river.
There is a rope, tied taut around a tree, about a foot off the ground. The other end of the rope disappears into the river. From where you stand, you can see that the rope descends at least three feet before you lose sight of it in the dark water.

"Wouldn't it be nice if our chest was at the other end of this rope," Stardust on Stone says. He'll look up and down the coast and examine the rope itself, hoping to spot trip wires or anything similar. Perception: 4
"Better to try and pull it out or go in after it?" he says. "What do you think?" He will rub his whiskers, take off a boot, and slowly extend one hairy toe toward the water, praying that it is warm. He has a disgusted expression on his face.
Stardust on Stone looks into the river, it's current moving at a slow pace. The rope is taut, giving no clues as to what is at the other end, under the water. He pulls off a boot and sticks his toe in the water, it's cool, it might even be refreshing, if the memories of being drenched all yesterday from the rain wasn't fresh in his mind.
As he contemplates putting his whole foot in the water, he hears the Kenku say something, he doesn't catch but believes it's about getting wet.
Tool, grabs the rope and begins to pull. At first nothing happens, the rope is tight and not budging, so he pulls harder. The rope still doesn't budge, but tool hears a faint twang, as a smaller thread attached to the rope breaks. From the canopy above, two sacks come crashing to the ground, spilling their contents.
One contains a giant centipede, the other contains hundreds of large centipedes that begin to swarm towards tool.
[Tool will disengage as an action and use all of his movement to run west]
Tool lets out a terrified shrill as the centipedes swarm around them. Without giving it a second thought, Tool shoves away the bugs on their body and runs to the west as far away as possible.

"Then best we find that chest soon." Tool stores their spellbook back into their backpack. "And whoever stole it."
