Alaric, in the darkness, will ask Boff "What is going on? We are too far from Gooterat for me to see anymore?"
Init 16. Being unable to see the threat and not knowing what is going on, Alaric will (with his blade summoned in his hand), dodge (unless light appears before his turn)
Gooterat fumbles with the lock, glancing up as he hears the sound of boots leaving the library. "What the?!?" he exclaimed with a wide eyed look at the empty doorway. His task all but forgotten the little Gnome muttered a few swear words and ran as fast as his little legs would carry him towards his companions, snatching the torch from his mage hand as he raced by.

“Let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall.” — Elrond
Boff's answer to Alaric's question is "Aargh!" Startled, but not one to flee from a fight, Boff lashes out instinctively with his handaxe, chopping at the bed-ridden corpse.
Attack (with advantage): 14 to hit, 5 slashing damage.
He then backs up toward the door. Not because he's scared. No, it's a strategic withdrawal. Bring the enemy to the other combatants. That's what it is.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Boff didn’t hesitate. With a grunt, he brought his handaxe down into the figure still tangled in bedclothes. The blade bit deep into rotted flesh, and the corpse let out a wet, gurgling moan. Not waiting, the dwarf backed toward the doorway.
The zombie lashed out, its fist swinging clumsily, but Boff slipped past the blow. The creature then lurched upright, the heavy comforter sloughing off its shoulders in a cloud of dust and sickly stench. Wheezing violently, it staggered after him, each step leaving streaks of foul residue on the warped floorboards.
Down the hall, Gooterat came sprinting with his torch held high, the gnome’s quick feet pattering over the creaking boards. The light stretched long shadows down the horseshoe corridor, reaching toward the master bedroom where the fight was already underway.
