He sees the Illithid in the distance and gives a big but quiet gulp. He remembers that not much worries them, and anything that does cause them concern would cause him and his companions at least as much concern. Not certain that his friends know its location, he scurries back to Krackel and describes the situation. He then returns to where he started (L33).
Amidst all the memories of stories of the illithid and what they had done to elves were some personal memories, of all the conflicts Lyra had with her parents when Lyra wanted to study nature instead of magic. The derision of other young high elves asking if she was really a wood elf. But while painful to recall, these memories strengthened her resolve. It would have been so easy to give in and focus on magic instead of nature. But she had faced the criticism and persevered in her convictions. and although it took decades, she eventually convinced her parents and thus became a ranger. She did learn some arcane magic along the way, but was able to make use of that while camping, especially on this strange world.
The memories of her long struggle to be a ranger, and how she did finally win that struggle gave her the strength to fight the illithid in her mind, and not give in to despair.
{She afraid, very afraid, and having problems focusing, but still struggling to fight anyway.}
Init 9 (all this inner turmoil has slowed her reactions)
