"So I assume we should set up some sort of watch, right?" Kanon asks when he finishes setting his bedroll near the fire.
"I can take first, Petti and Zina can have second, maybe Zeratto can have third and Portia can have last. Does that sound good?"
Kanon unclips his lute from his pack and begins to tune it. "Does anyone know how to hunt?" The idea of going into the forest for food was terrifying, but he thought to ask anyway. After buying his new component pouch he only had enough coin for two days of rations. He was really hoping he didn't have to use both days on the first leg of the journey.
"Oh, I've got provisions for the lot!" Orst bellows. "I'd appreciate if ye younger lot could take the watches, but I can handle the food! I even brought some berries and nuts for certain of ye. Don't think I didn't see ye turning green at the eating habits of my boys and I! No, no, Old Orst sees everything!"
"I'll be fine with the last watch. I like being up a little before dawn anyway."
Portia laughed at Orst's comments about the food. "I like a good mix of things, but had to admit a bit too much meat and grease to go with it when they cooked. Thanks for bringing nuts and berries as an option or to be part of a meal."
Once she had finished helping the camp setup, she sat by the fire for a short time. Having the last watch, she planned on being in bed soon enough, but needed to try to relax a little first.
Seeing Portia sitting by the fire, Kanon smirks and strums his lute.
A human merchant walks into a city And sees a gnome jumping upon a grate. He's shouting - "Five, Five, Five!" With each new bounce.
He strums the lute again.
She goes over & asks the little fellow what he's doing. 'Oh', he tells her, 'I'm playing one of our famous games! It's SO FUN! Would you like to try?' 'Um, sure,' she replies. 'What do I do?'
Lero play a lil dilly as he jumps up and sings:
'Just jump up & down on this grating, shouting 'Five!' & trying to jump as HIGH as you can!'
He calms down and strums his lute, changing the tune to a soft melody:
The merchant gives it a try, but after a couple of jumps she says, 'Hey, this isn't that fun.'
The music is now dark an ominous as he finishes the song.
'Oh, you have to jump HIGHER to really enjoy it!' the gnome replies. So the merchant makes a really BIG jump... And the gnome whips the cover off the grate, causing her to fall into the sewer below.
He finishes with a quick and cheerful melody.
Then he throws the grate back on, stands on it... And jumps up and down yelling, "Six! Six! Six!"
He laughs and continues to play a soft, soothing tune.
Pettilaen unfastened the cork of his water-satchel, and took a good swig. He liked the feeling of water in his mouth. It was refreshing. "I can take first, Petti and Zina can have second, maybe Zeratto can have third and Portia can have last. Does that sound good?" The water turned sour in his mouth and he spit it out.
"Why do we have to do our shift together, huh?!?" he shouts, getting off of the ground. "You think one gnome can't handle himself!? You think me and her need to stick together or something?? Well, we don't!" He paces around for a brief moment, before sitting down and putting his head down. Gaia screeches and takes off into the sky at the same moment.
"I'll take first watch with you, Kanon," Zina sniffed. She wasn't ready for several hours alone with Pettilaen. "I don't want to stick with you, even if I needed to." While things were getting better, she was still hurt by some of the things said by Brookbrewers.
Kanon's silly songs couldn't bring her off the edge of insanity that she felt as if she was currently teetering on. She doubted that she would be able to sleep much, if at all. Being back in the Cloakwood with the book was having a profound effect on the gnome.
Portia just shakes her head at the gnomes and at Kanon's song. "I'm definitely doing last watch because I'm definitely going to bed early. Like I think now is good due to the mood." She stands up.

Kanon continues the soft, soothing melody. "Are you ok, Zina? You've both been off after the visit to Baldur's Gate." His words seem to sooth and relax her, the music adding an air of security to the camp. The melody and the words embrace her and she's tempted to tell the story, "It's ok Zina, tell us what happened. It'll be a weight off your chest, and you'll be able to sleep peacefully tonight." Suggestion
Zina instantly recognized the spell being cast immediately. "You did not just try and cast Suggestion on me!" the gnome roared, leaping to her feet. "I have had it up to here, with all of you! How dare you? How farjiin dare you. Pettilaen and his stupid family, and now you, Kanon? I am not a d'arv prize to be won, or a dimwit you can control. I am a powerful wizard in my own right, and I deserve a little bit of farjiin respect." Tears began to well up in the corners of her eyelids, but she blinked them away in anger.
The gnome turned away from the rest of the party, her back turned so they couldn't see her cry. "Just leave me the farji alone," she spat over her shoulder before walking away from the party and the soft glow of their campfire. She walked over to a nearby tree and hid behind it, curling up into a small ball holding her familiar. At least I have you, she thought to the little snake as the tears she had been trying to keep at bay all broke free.
Zeratto takes his watch quietly, contemplating that the bad feeling he had was not an outside danger, but turmoil within the group. He silently prays to the whole of nature that the roughness can be quelled.
Pettilaen had watched the ordeal from up above through Gaia's senses. Hearing Kanon, he swoops down and yells at him, "You're the one prying into other..." His "speaking" came across as screeches and banshee wails from Gaia's vocal chords. Snapping out of the mind-meld, he glares at Kanon, likewise visibly upset. "You're the one prying into other people's business! You're worse than my parents! You should be the one apologizing and talking to her."
OOC: Gaia is a celestial barn owl, and for those who don't know what barn owls sound like...
Kanon rolls his eyes, "If you're afraid, Pettilaen, I can do it with you. I'm not sure why I upset her, but we can't continue travelling like this. You two cast spells at each other all the time, so I don't see what the big deal is."
Kanon lights up a small stone and tosses it in the direction Zina is hiding in. "Petti wants to apologize Zina," he calls out, "And so do I. We've both done something stupid to upset you... come out of that scary forest, will you?"
Pettilaen pulls out one of his dozen knifes and begins whittling a piece of wood, most likely to direct his thoughts elsewhere. It clearly didn't work. "Afraid?!" he laughs. "I've been blasted in the back by her, and had Kelemvor pulling out the scales to judge my soul because of it. And I still forgave her. I'm not even mad at her. I'm mad at you and your big nose, getting into our business."
He stabs the knife into the ground, and sighs. "The funny thing is, it's not even a big deal, what happened. Her parents thought we were together, and when they found out we weren't, wanted us to be together. Something about "time to grow up and accept responsibility". That didn't go over well with either of us, but especially Zina. She did the slow-talking thing, which my dad hates, and then they started arguing. She would've blown his face off with one of her fire blasts if I hadn't stepped in. Then she got mad at me, and everything was just awkward... It was a big mess." He pulls out a bottle from his backpack, ornately labeled Brookebrew Red, and takes a swig of it.
Kanon lights up another small stone, this one a nice soothing blue color, and tosses it in Zina's direction again. "Explain your side to her, and she can explain hers. It's as simple as that," Kanon says. He eyes the Brookebrew Red and licks his lips, realizing how thirsty he is.
"Zina... Neither Petti or I will be sleeping until you come out and either blast us with fire or tell us exactly why you're upset. You can even do the slow talking thing." Kanon's words echo out into the darkness as he lights up another stone, this one green, and tosses it in her direction. "We know you're there!"
"What part of leave me alone do you two idiots not understand?" Zina called back in Common. "Leave... me... alone..." she repeated, first in Gnommish, then in Celestial, then in Primordial. She doubted any of them would understand the last two languages, but she felt that they really drove home the point. The wizard grabbed the lit up stones and covered them in dirt, extinguishing their light. She didn't need their help, either of them. Zina had been taking care of herself for months before Pettilaen and the rest of them had come along. In fact, the instances of her almost dying had drastically increased after joining with this group.
They don't even know what they're apologizing for, Zina thought to Mirage as the snake slithered through her fingers. No! I am not going to blast them with fireballs... Because you're wrong, it won't make me feel better!... I'm sorry friend, I'm not yelling- I didn't mean to yell at you... You know talking to them won't make things better, it never does. My words always get tangled up, and then everyone gets more upset.
Portia stomps back to the fire in frustration. "I can't even sleep with all this stupidity. Do not cast suggest on people as that is ruder than giving them a hurt I can heal. And well if she zapped you with something I would be blaming you for being stupid and bringing it on. I know you probably thought you were helping, but you did it all wrong." She sighed.
She turned to Pettilaen. "I'm sorry things got all wigged out at your parents' house. Makes me rather glad I grew up an orphan and adopted mostly by one priest, but had a temple full of people watching out for me. Maybe way more people being sure I grew up right, but way more ideas of how and interesting discussions they thought I didn't hear." She manages to smile again. She pulls Pettilaen into a quick hug and steps away in time to make sure it felt more like a friend hugging in understanding.
She is not looking at anyone in general as she says, "From now on, no spell casting at each other, especially of the coercive type because messing with someone's free will is worse than kicking them in the arse. May Lathander burn that into your head if he has to. Also, if someone wants to be left alone and not answer your questions, they don't have to answer and you should respect them enough to let them have space while sorting things out. Also, if the issue is not with you, stay out of it."
"Zina, I'm coming to give you a hug before I try going back to bed. I just feel I should." She walks over to the tree Zina was behind and kneels by the gnome with her arms open ready to hug, but letting Zina decide if she wanted it.
"Zina, I'm coming to give you a hug before I try going back to bed," the cleric finished, her arms wide open and inviting. "I just feel I should." Zina didn't appreciate being lectured, even if most of Portia's words had been on her side.
"I don't need you to play mommy," the wizard growled, casting Ray of Frost. She knew better than to actually aim to hit, so the blast of cold energy hit the ground beside Portia harmlessly. "I don't need you to comfort me or fight my battles for me."
She speaks in gnomish and totally ignores the frost near her bare feet. "Bah, I ain't fighting your battle. I'm trying to get idiots to shut up so I can sleep and well, I like hugging people to show I care, not that I want to be your farji mommy. If I wanted to be a mommy, there is someone who might be interested in marrying me if I felt that was the route to go at this time. Obviously, I'm not taking that route yet or I wouldn't have decided to start goblin hunting with you all in the first place."
She stands back up and shrugs. "I'm not sure how to handle any of you anymore and I'm aggravated enough that I might just stay in Beregost when I get there on the way south. I'm not even sure what I really want to say and obviously the way I think doesn't work with dealing with any of you."
Kanon stands and follows Portia as she makes her way back to her bedroll. "Hold on," he says as he grabs her hand. When she turns and looks at him he immediately drops it and a fresh blush arises.
"Look, Portia. I think Zina needs to reestablish trust with us, and just dropping it and letting it linger is not going to help. We need to fix this," he gestures to the dark spooky forest nearby, "or the next time we're attacked it's going to result in more death."
He taps his lute and meets her eyes, "And telling me not to use my magic, which is focused on emotions and thoughts, is like me telling you to stop praying to Lathander. My words heal, they sooth, they relax, and they can cause strife. It's the way I work."
"So I assume we should set up some sort of watch, right?" Kanon asks when he finishes setting his bedroll near the fire.
