"Um, he has no wings, what?"

Musashi lets out a short, dry huff of a laugh, the sound echoing slightly in the cramped spiral.  "Figure of speech" he grunts, shifting the weight of his maul.  "If it flies, I call it wings.  If it doesn't have them, it’s even easier to bring it down to my level."

He falls back into his silent watch, letting the scouts' confusion roil.  Whether it has wings or magic keeping it aloft, Musashi’s goal remains the same: ground it, then break it.

"Oh"

Doc Jojo listens to the discussion, but realizes he has no idea how to assist.  "Whoever is going to keep us focused, let me know where my position is best in the line.  It sounds like ranged attack is best, is my boomerang or shortbow the best?"

Gail comments, "I don't have a bow, not that good with them, so I'll need to get close enough to toss javelins. And once I get that close I'll be able to tell its strengths and weaknesses."

Musashi: "I'll take the lead.  I've got the reach and the weight to keep his attention.  Scarlett, stay close behind us...your light is the only thing that’s going to keep our minds and bodies from snapping if he gets a clean look at us."

Etrus rushes to keep close to Scarlett. Though the Beholder can’t behold him for now, if the others are right it can remove his magic from him in an instant. This is not a fight where he will be able to walk up onto the ceiling for safety. 

(Anything else for preparation?)

Gail will be right beside Musashi, since she'll need to get close to the beholder to attack.

(Assuming that you all walk up the tunnel with the archers in front)

As you walk up the tunnel, after about 60 feet, the tunnel levels out. After that, the archers whisper to you, "This is where we go in. I'll whistle when you guys can come in."

JoJo is about 5' behind Scarlett with his bow out and ready .

"If you two are going for 'up-close and personal' I'll join you. Apart from the aura protection for you, I do my best smiting that way."

Gail comments, "We should split up and go left and right using the pillars for cover,  so that it can't catch all of us with a single attack."

Doc JoJo states "I'll walk with Scarlett."

*and i'll watch from the void :)*

As you all sit there, you hear a small whistle come from within the lair. When you all enter, you see pillars twenty feet apart, and ten feet in front of you, you also see that the beholder is floating near the back left of the room

(You all get  a surprise round, but please roll initiative in the post where you take your surprise round turn)

 I think the nearest pillar is 10' from us?

 Also, everybody within 30' has advantage on initiative thanks to Dagger of Warning

Question for DM: How far from us is the beholder? 

I'm wondering if I can get to it with normal 30' movement.

Assuming Scarlett can reach the beholder with normal movement:

Bonus action - cast Spirit Shroud - extra damage will be Necrotic, Beholder speed reduced by 10'

Shortsword attack 1: 14 (assume miss)

Shortsword attack 2: 18 If that hits damage is 7 piercing + 4 Necrotic - total 11

If she can't reach it I'll do something else
