Caine easily avoids the hit, but misses the follow through and is hit, but in a rage Caine has Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage. So the "8" is actually ???

Is resistance mean 0 damage or partial damage? If partial how much? A percentage or a flat number?
How does that compare to immunity? The PHB describes that but I assume a DMG explains it, but I don't have that.
