Rixton:
I draw both scimitars that I have acquired and twirl them in my hands. They are lighter than I expected but the balance feels foreign. I swipe them through the air and parry a couple of phantom swords to familiarize myself with the balance of them. "Ok," I mutter. "I think I'm ready."
I take a deep breath. I am not so much offended by the rats as curious what secrets lie beyond them. And secrets are something I cannot abide. I charge in and strike the rat on the right (R2) followed by a second one on the left (R1).
R1 Scimitar Attack: 3 Damage: 5
R2 Scimitar Attack: Attack: 2 Damage: 4 (Attack is +2 and damage is -2)
Carrow gets the jump on the goblin and quickly fires an arrow that hits its target. The goblin's body twists sideways at the impact of the blow, but the monster is able to return fire at the ranger. (Shortbow attack: 19 Piercing damage, if successful: 5)
(Andor and Ladrian may take their round 1 actions)
Meanwhile, Rixton cuts a gash in one of the giant rats with the scimitar in his left hand. As the rogue retreats to the south, both giant rats flee to the north.
At the same moment the goblin fires back at Carrow, Andor launches a bolt from his crossbow back at the now badly wounded enemy. Cursing himself for not being as quick as he needed he hopes the bolt will strike true.

Vigan
Just able to make out the forms of Andor, Ladrian and Carrow entering combat to his east, Vigan decides to join Rixton, and heads up the tunnel after him. This half-elf has a death-wish, wandering off on his own...
He pauses briefly to look southeast, back where they entered the cave, attempting to listen for signs of life in the tunnels they had not yet explored, eyes peering through the gloom.
With the rats scurrying away, I pat down the halfling body for anything useful. I then investigate the cavern for any clues as to how it has been used recently.

Andor
Turning to see Carrow having been shot by the goblin Andor moves over to him "Are you ok? It doesn't look too bad, I think." Checking around to make sure no other enemies seem to be about he adds "I know you can see in the dark but if you need to hang back while we move on it's ok, you don't need to put yourself in harms way all the time".
The sorcerer then moves forward slowly and carefully on the lookout for enemies as well as any sign of the humans, one hand holding the torch the other ready to cast with.

Rixton's search reveals that the halfling likely died from a blow to the head just as the human did earlier. Other than his shirt and trousers, there is nothing to be found on the halfling. The western wall of this room does have several items leaning against it. In total, there are nine spears, five clubs, two daggers, and six wooden shields. The spears are identical to those wielded by the guards in Nightstone. Other items in the room include piles of straw that are clearly being used as beds.
Vigan carefully follows after Rixton; the goliath neither hears nor sees any sign of life in the long tunnel that stretches to the entrance of the cave.
Stepping over the slain goblin in the northeast tunnel, Andor, Carrow, and Ladrian enter an oblong-shaped cavern, and through the gloom they see dozens of faces--human, dwarf, and halfling--staring back at them. A husky dwarf blurts out, "Well, look at that. I was right all along! I knew someone was out there and causin' these filthy goblins to tremble."
Others in the room begin to smile, some begin to weep, and a few begin to cheer. The dwarf stands and says, "I am Morak, proprietor of the Nightstone Inn. And by Moradin's beard, are we happy to see you."

Carrow
Turning with a nod he silently thanked the sorcerer, removing the arrow he checked to see if the Injury was bad, a minor cut. He quietly scolded himself, 'fool, you had the drop on the beast and you still could not kill it, now another scouts ahead, this group will never respect a ranger who can't fulfil his primary role'. Carrow set off and entered the large chamber which to his astonishment was filled with villagers, he quickly pulled the hood over his face to hide his Orcish features. Looking around the ranger as always expected a trap.
Entering the cavern after Rixton, Vigan finds him looking along an assortment of weapons, and walks up next to him.
"The armory I suppose. Less weapons in the hands of goblins, or whatever takes over these caves after we leave, is always a good thing. You grab the daggers and clubs, I'll take the rest."
The goliath begins to attach the spears and shields to his backpack. When finished, he turns to Rixton - "Do you think I could pass for a Tortle?"
"Don't tortles have backs that are harder than their heads and not the other way around? Oh, and be careful over there. There are some giant rats about," I say, gathering up the assorted weapons. "I would not be surprised to find we may have more threats in this tunnels as well. If we can find the villagers, we can readily arm them with these."
"Well met, we have been looking for you all, we've killed a fair few goblins and a couple of ogres, and had a fight with a black pudding too, however we don't know how many enemies are left in these caves so let's all stay calm and quiet for a minute. Firstly, is anyone injured, and are any of you trained to fight?"

As Rixton and Vigan are gathering up the weaponry and the shields, the two giant rats reappear in the tunnel to the north, approximately 20' away. They are watchful but skittish and, therefore, do not give the impression that they will come any closer. After a few seconds, one of the giant rats darts out of sight as it moves farther north in the tunnel.
In response to Andor's question, two men stand, both of whom are dressed in the garb of a Nightstone guard. "We are village guards; we can fight if our weapons are returned to us, of course. They must be stored somewhere in these caves. None are injured here, but some of us were taken away by an ogre; we do not know their fate."
Carrow looks over the room carefully, including all those who are being held captive there. Nothing seems amiss. In total, the ranger counts eighteen villagers.
Morak, the dwarf asks, "Lady Nandar sent you, I assume?"
I look to Vigan. "I doubt those giant rats are running towards a large group of captured villagers. They seem the skittish type. We could go spelunking to the north but I think it would be only for our own amusement."
"The rest of cave should be explored. We have not found the villagers yet, and I would rather know there are no further threats at our backs before we move on."
Vigan gestures to the passageway to the north, indicating that Rixton should probably go first.
The moment Rixton maneuvers himself to see around the thin wall of rock, he sees not two giant rats, but five. And behind all of them stands a goblin, slightly larger than most. His torso is covered by a chain shirt, in his left hand he holds a wooden shield, and in his right he brandishes a scimitar. He locks eyes with Rixton and says, in unexpectedly good Common, "Let us strike a deal, hero, rather than clash swords."
