Satisfied with the small bundle of pieces Darruk walks over and heaps the broken brooms into the driver's arms. He quickly turns to walk back so as not to be seen smiling. He then sits with the others.
The driver lays the splinters out on the table, trying for all the world to put them back together. "No damage, never damaged, that's right!"
The Sergeant nods at Darruk. "Reckless indeed. We have rules in Waterdeep about driving recklessly through the streets. You will of course have to pay the relevant fines, and I expect you to assist Durnan in cleaning up this mess. Still," he says, motioning around the Portal, "this seems like an awful lot of trouble, and an awful lot of injuries, from one simple carriage. Now, do any of you want to tell me what happened after the carriage came through? We can talk here over a nice drink, or we can talk down at the Hall. I don't mind, either way."
I definitely vote for more drinks. After all I pulled people away from the edge and stopped at least one of the brooms. Dang things were going crazy attacking folks. It took more effort than I'm accustomed to. Small fire. The cats fine, I pet it but it didn't seem to care. Small fire. It got put out.
"Well officer, as you can see, if you want real information you will need to speak with me." Glory pulls up his shirt to show many deep bruises "And as you can see we have been having a wonderful time with the contents of this Coach. The brooms in this coach were not just ordinary brooms. They seem to contain a certain amount of magic. Enough to cause the damage you see here and several points of damage I will refrain from showing you. In total I think we subdued three of them after they attacked us with great vigor. " Glory tucks his shirt back down and says " Now this other issue is more opaque to me at present, it seems that these two gentlemen .."pointing at Dwindlejoy and Grady "were very interested in something that this youth has " pointing at Leoros. "And our good man Valafar, it would appear, is a friend to the young Leoros. What else can I tell you about the current situation?" Glory smiles broadly and opens his arms to sweep the room.
Valafar nods "Yes, those two..." He gestures to Grady and Dwindlejoy "Were very interested in harassing my friend here, Leoros" With that, he pats a hand on Leoros' shoulder "Trying to take advantage of the chaos of the carriage crash to steal him away. I defended myself and him until my other friends here put away the brooms."
Grady sputters "Another lie! We were interested in protecting this...Leoros, was it? Weren't we, Dwindlejoy? From your violence! Sergeant, again, are you going to trust good, upstanding citizens, or these strangers?"
Valafar gives a sharp toothed smile to Grady “Who indeed!” He turns to the Sergeant “Excuse me. I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Valafar Szereban of House Szereban.” The Tiefling will flash his Signet Ring bearing the seal of his Noble House. “And I can vouch for these people here” He gestures to the group and Leoros “But I’m afraid I can’t vouch for those two” he says and waves dismissively to Grady and Dwindlejoy.
Sergeant Grimsdatch chuckles. "Don't you worry, Mister Szereban. Grady's a citizen, sure...but good and upstanding...ehhhh...that might be a stretch."
At this, Dwindlejoy bristles. "Lawman or not, you may not impugn my good friend. He is telling you the truth."
"You seem to be at the root of all this," the sergeant points to Leoros. "Mind telling me what this is all about?"
Leoros opens his mouth, but thinks better of it. Finally, he says "I was here...to get a drink with a friend" -- his eyes dart to Valafar and to Darruk, "and these men came after me. Gods now why - I do not." Fortunately for Leoros, Grady can only stare daggers, not throw them, at the moment.
Grimsdatch nods and says "I think I have enough here to clean up the mess. But, friends," he adds with perhaps a touch of sarcasm, "you have one last chance to help your friend out. Why did this happen? If you say these two ne'er do wells took advantage of the crash, you know as well as I they, or somebody like them, will try again. I can't help your friend if I don't know what happened."
"Although we found these gentlemen ..."Glory vaguely waves toward Dwindlejoy and Grady "..Menacing, I'm one for the -Innocent until proven Guilty- adage. We told them to stand back and they did. Honestly I have nothing more to accuse them of. Clearly they are interested in something that Leoros has but they have yet to commit high crimes or misdemeanors, unless of course you know more than we do," he gives a knowing look to Sergeant Grimsdatch. "We are solely interested in protecting ourselves and our new friend here. They know that now and should keep that in mind before attempting any more intimidations." Glory settles in his chair, entertained by the whole business. He is still interested in Leoros' object that has become a kind of macguffin in its own right and feels like a spectator as well as a minor participant in this unfolding drama. He hopes it isn't over yet.
"Ladies and Gentlebeings," a voice rings out from the near stage. Looking up, you see that Rusty Bighatand the performers have actually done a bang-up job of cleaning up the mess. There is still a carriage and a hole in the wall, but all debris has been swept, and even the traces of fire have been more or less removed. "That was an...unexpected surprise for all of us, but, let me assure you, the show must go on!" he concludes with a flourish.
"Err, as soon as the noble man and women of the watch conclude their business, of course," he adds hurriedly.
A few members of the watch, in turn, report back in whispers to Sergeant Grimsdatch. He stands up from the table and motions to Grady and Dwindlejoy. "I think we have enough here. You two, come with me. The rest of you, watch yourselves. I do not know enough to say whatever happened here may not occur again. Durnan, a word before we depart." The groups heads for the door, where they trade words in low voices with Durnan.
The stage mostly cleared away, Rusty calls out again to the crowd. "Incredible, ladies and gentlebeings! First, bold adventurers adventure down below, then, a mysterious attack right in our very midst! Now, on with tonight's entertainment! First, my I present your very own Threestrings Mereg, the Bard of the Yawning Portal!"
Fresh from cleaning up the fire, Threestrings comes out, and manages to coax a tune out of his battered instrument. As promised on the handbill, he tells the story of the Baron of Blood:
Waterdeep has many villains, but few so terrifying as the “Baron of Blood”: a cruel nobleman who bathes in a bath of blood drawn from his victims. Each night, the baron’s minions prowl the streets for lost souls to kidnap. They deliver them to the baron’s manor, where he personally murders them.
One night, a penniless tiefling named Bravado was searching the sewers for salvage when he tripped and broke his lantern. In the pitch dark, he stumbled across the hidden entrance to the baron’s manor. When the baron returned, Bravado had no option but to hide in his bath of blood. Alas, the baron found him! Covered in blood, Bravado took a great gamble: he pretended
to be the devil lord Asmodeus! The trick worked, and Bravado tried many unsuccessful ploys to distract the baron and escape. In time, the baron caught on to his ruse, but was so impressed by his cunning that he decided to let him live!
The baron rewarded Bravado by agreeing to swap roles with him one night every tenday. For that night, Bravado would enjoy all the luxuries of the wealthy, while the baron mixed with the poor. Perhaps he’s here tonight...?
The song goes for a while, during which you can all take a short rest.
During the performance, other members of the troupe, including both Rusty and the gnome you saw earlier assisting with the fire, go in and out.
Towards the end of the song, and elderly halfling and a human approach your table. The human fidgets constantly, and her hand never strays far from her sword. The halfling smiles gently up at her and says, takes the trembling hand, and says gently "peace, child. These are not our foes." She turns to you and asks "please, may we join you?"
Of course Darruk smiles as he motions for the to sit. He leans back mug in one hand as the other rests on the handle of his axe. He eyes the sword. I don't think you're going to need that right now .
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well let's count, if we can put up with a fire, a runaway carraige, brooms trying to kill us, bandits come to harass us, and gendarmes wanting to arrest someone, I think we would be delighted with a your company. By comparison, you are a breath of fresh air."Glory isn't being sarcastic, at least not completely. He is still aching from the broom beating he took and hopes to rest as much as he can in the near future. (Use my hit die: 2 hp recovered) OOC: Oh yeah, he feels SO much better :-|
"Thank you," says the halfling, as gingerly sits in the chair her human companion has pulled out for her. Once they are both seated, she continues "I could not help but notice how you handled the...situation. Curious, how a carriage happened to crash moments after seasoned fighters descended into the pit, don't you think? Durnan should be glad that you were hear to sort it out. Tell me, do you go looking for trouble?"
Satisfied with the small bundle of pieces Darruk walks over and heaps the broken brooms into the driver's arms. He quickly turns to walk back so as not to be seen smiling. He then sits with the others.

Blue Eyes shrugs. "It is Waterdeep and sometimes brooms attack."

Saraba looks at his mug....empty, tosses it behind him and grabs another random drink from the table, and starts to finish it.
