Dungeon of the Mad Mage (#9 PbP)

Ok you guys are veterans at this game by now so im gonna try and do things by the book.

Ill post up the map again, these are things to account for:

Az: You are creeping down the hallway first. You made your stealth roll. You got a 12. Does the beholder notice you yet? Id have to, I imagine, make a contested perception check. Then, it’ll technically be initiative for you and it if you fail to gain surprise.

Either way, if you duck behind the corner and when it comes around, everyone else roll initiative.

Ra'iik also prepares for his engaging tactic, waiting for the all clear from Az.

He grips Evrik's forearm in ''thanks" for the buff and prepares his engagement.

After glancing at paladins seeking confirmation, Biggs shrugs. "Eh, suit yourself." Is Biggs final word on the subject. He eats a ration, preferring to hold on to the Goodberry for a while more. Biggs also kept towards the back of the group. Whereas Wedge hangs close to Grianna, patting her head now and then as if to keep her calm.

Ok, so before you guys start making rolls, is Az doing this by himself FIRST? Then you guys join in? Thats what I understood.

(If the Zombie beholder patrolling the room shaped like a rightwards pointing twig and berries, then we'd be hiding in the next room right over I thought. If its the two long extended hallways then I guess he's on his own?)

(Yes, you'd have to contest the check with perception if you're going 'by the book'though if it has passive perception you can always use that as well)

In the past

Azrael, already awake, would rush over, just after the flying monkey had tossed a pillow at Grianne, and gave it a stern look One cannot help if they had a bad dream! And throwing a pillow at their face is hardly polite. As for you Grianne.. Whatever horror faced you in your dream, know this: All outcomes can change, you simply needs change it. If it was a monster.. there is no being in existence that cannot be defeated, Even the strongest deity in all existence can be felled.

The Present

As Azrael  creeps around the corner, he tries to see where the Beholder might be.. if he doesn't see it initially, he'll wait, only poking his head around the corner until it gets closer, since it seemed to be patrolling before.. he assumed it would be now as well. And instead of going to it, he would wait till it came to him. As he waited, he said a silent prayer to Bahamut.... Oh great Wyrm, please, grant us your blessing in this battle.... For this is the fiercest foe we have come across to date.. a Beholder.. One being of vile evil, and hatred, as well as an abhorrent abomination... Guide our hands, so that we may strike true.... Religious Intens: 2

Whenever the Beholder gets close enough, Azrael will stealth cast (if he's not seen) or simply cast, if he IS seen regardless, Slow on the beholder, (Dc 14 WIS save) or suffer all the negative effects of 'slow' before Ducking behind the wall, and giving everyone else his signal to get themselves ready (for those who haven't already)

Initiative 17

Grianne would looks at Azrael is silent assurance, the pillow had not made her come to her senses but Azraels strong tones of assurance had calmed her racing hear somewhat. She accepts the monkeys apology and sits quietly for a couple more hours, waiting for the group to awaken.

Azrael is going first, i'll make notes of your initiatives AFTER this little mini encounter. Here's where we are:

Azrael: Stealth 12. The Beholder is not actively looking for you, and has a passive perception of 9. You mutter a quick prayer to Bahamut. Something else answered, and thus you accumulate another point of Religious Misdirection. (See the DM Public Campaign Notes.) 

YES. WE HEAR. 

You realize, in a quick moment of realization, Bahamut did not exactly answer you, but you're so preoccupied on your task, you tell yourself to examine this at a later time.You see it the beholder float towards you, making it's patrol, and cast SLOW.  Here's the save: Unable to parse dice roll. Unable to parse. Great. Rolling again. Unable to parse dice roll. Can anyone see these rolls?

Unfortunately, the Slow spell fails. Beholder initiative. 17 The beholder uses one of it's eye rays: 1
Azrael, you brave soul, please make a DC 14 CON ST, taking 40 necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. As you get hit by magical death, the proper round begins!

Azrael is initially confused we? he shakes his head and will deal with this later, seeing the eye-ray come at him, he... 18 taking the blast head on, despite his best efforts, taking the full 40 damage, but surviving with 14 hp thanks to that shielded health he received earlier. 

RAUGH! Azrael literally roars, as a majority of his flesh is melted away, leaving just enough for him to physically function, as he runs behind cover once more.

The battle has come! Prepare thyself! It comes but doesn't know you're here! Take advantage of that as it rounds the corner.. if you have any range, use cover to your advantage!

using whatever movement he has left, he tries to duck behind a farther corner to allow himself to recuperate.

Grianne responds to Azraels call to arms.

Lythril rushes forward, a little uneasy. She  knows that these beasts are dangerous beyond measure. "Rilifane hear me! Calm my heart, strengthen my arm! Eaagh!"

Bonus Action wrathful smite  DC 13 vs fear 3 damage

Attack: 8 Damage: 11

Divine Smite 5 if attack hits.

Attack: 22 Damage: 11

Divine Smite 6 if attack hits.

translation:

Second attack hits for 11 Bludgeoning, 6 Radiant from Divine Smite, 3 Psychic from Wrathful Smite

Initiative 3

Evrik stacks up in the hallway with the group. As Azrael comes back around the corner,  Evrik calls to the gods to bless the first three closest to the beholder as well as himself.

Ra'iik sees the devastation this rotting evil has inflicted on the dragon born. His knuckles glow white from a clenched fist of divine rage. "NO!" He yells, ready to fight. [Is the beholder within melee?]
