Respar nods at Eya's words. "That all sounds good to me. Since we wish to draw as little attention as possible, at least for now, I'd recommend that you keep your disguise form, but lose the Mitran adornment. That would garner you a lot of unwanted attention. If we decide we need to pretend to be official, or we get questioned too closely, fall back to that identity. If we're all agreed to these bare bones of our plans, let's go see if Sakkarot will go along and provide crew."
Sakkarot shrugs at Kiven's questions, "Many things I suppose, frankly I suspect that a large part of such matters will be discovering precisely where the limits of my existing knowledge of the world lie. As to aiding each other in the future, many things are possible, but I would suggest focusing on us both living through the next month or two before trying to lay down any plans."
Kili is conscious again by the time Eya and the others return to the Frosthamar, but he seems to be having trouble controlling his limbs. His left wing in particular keeps jerking around as he sits, apparently of its own accord. "What the heck was that stuff? I feel all wonky."
The camp continues to wind itself up in a loud and boisterous manner through most of the night. Most of the revelers party until they collapse wherever they see fit. The next morning, as the group discuss their plans, the bugbear army is a sorry sight. Should The knights of Tallingarde come upon them in this state, this little war would be over before it began.
Fortunately, no such attack is forthcoming, and they are left to recover. Sakkarot is quite willing to send a few of his people along to return with the ship, and agrees with the signal scheme proposed by Respar. "Is there anything else you require? I would prefer that you left today. I imagine it will take you quite some time to formulate a plan for that place that stands a chance of success."
Respar replies, "We will be leaving shortly. We know you need three weeks to unite the tribes, then want to attack withing three more weeks. That gives us at least three weeks to prepare a plan. If we signal for a team, have them arrive no more than an hour before the main attack begins. That should give us enough time to get into position. If we are found out, we will do our best to turn into a huge diversion, trying to lure troops away from the keep. And if no team arrives, well, we will have plans for that contingency as well. Good luck with the tribes!"
Eya goes to say goodbye to Grumblejack one last time before they leave. "Hey big guy, we're leaving soon. It's going to be a few weeks before we get to see each other again, after the big battle. Remember what I said before and stay safe. Don't pick a fight you don't think you can win. And keep practicing your sneak too."
After their conversation, she heads back to the party and prepares to set sail. She uses her usual disguise but without any Mitran symbols.
Kiven listens to Sakkarot's reply and says "well, my new friend, if anything strikes you, think about how an alliance with an elven Lord might help you get where you want to be. You will not suffer a lack of worthwhile conversation when you sit atop Talingarde with others who are worthy. As to staying alive, I may be able to help with that in the short term as well. I am quite loyal to those who return the favor. First, however, I will work to earn your trust by taking my... 'knot'... and tearing down Balentyne such that your forces can walk right in. I'm sure they'll still be room for them to have their fun, don't worry. Dispatching every last guard isn't really my calling." At that Kiven raises his glass and prepares to depart, adding "enjoy the...festivities" as he glances out over the various types of debauchery with a look of disgust.
Before departing the bugbear camp Kiven looks for Grumblejack. "Mighty Ezren, I wish you luck in the weeks ahead. Enjoy your time here and stay alive. We look forward to having you with us again as you are an important member of our party. You did well on our journey, brave one. It is unfortunate that you cannot come to the town with us, but we will change that for you soon."
As Respar and Eya converse about strategies, Kiven pipes up. "Well, well, you two seem to have it all figured out, eh? Is there really any need for us to go see for ourselves at all then?" The sarcasm is thick, as always. "I do have some appreciation for your suggestion here though, ...Respar is it? That is if bugbears on a ship are not noticed by the Mitran patrols on either of the trips across the lake that this plan necessitates. We should not fully rely on the fact that they were not caught on either crossing, as we may never know the truth of it. If they can come through the secret passage with us, however, all the better. You seem like the flexible sort anyhow, my friend, always adapting to the situation and never too set on one idea..."
As Eya lays out the timeline, Kiven nods his head in agreement. "I'm sure I can assist in gathering knowledge of this place over the period of several weeks, yes. Perhaps our experienced friend here could even gain employment at Balentyne, if need be, changing out chamber pots or something of the sort to avoid any further scrutiny." He nods towards Respar. "If you can craft notable arcane items, demon woman, even I would be most appreciative and quite impressed." He sighs and shakes his head. "So many valuable items lost on the night of our... capture. At least they could not keep Dun' Valkar from me. The rest is replaceable." He looks at and touches his bow with perhaps a bit too much fondness.
Jesla shakes her head upin hearing the others squabble. " I agree with Kiven about it being a bad idea to have bugbears making multiple trips to thw fort over the lake. Sooner or later fortune will be fickle and it could prove catastrophic to our mission. I dont feel that the reward is worth the risk on it. " She shrugs upon saying this.
In response to Jesla, Respar says, "If we decide in the end that trying to bring that team in is a bad idea, we can signal that way. I'm just hoping to keep our options open."
He does not rise to Kiven's remarks, but does say, "While we sail, we also need to decide what our cover story for going to Aldencross is. I did think of a couple of ideas to offer. If anyone wants to hear them, of course."
Kiven adds "it is too bad we do not have a few humans or something less...imposing... than bugbears to be seen sailing this boat." "Then at least Respar's secret force could remain as mere cargo, hidden away, and would not even need to be part of our initial crossing or the return trip. Having them with us today increases the risk to the rest of us." Kiven pictures a Mitran patrol inspecting their ship on the initial crossing and doesn't like where that leads. He thus adds "I don't think we can afford to alert the Mitrans of trouble this early on by destroying another of their ships so close to Balentyne if we are stopped today." Thinking further he suggests "WE could do the ferrying of your secret force, Respar, in the hours before the siege, perhaps? Then if we must destroy a patrol it will be too late for them to even notice, and there will not be excessive trips across this lake with bugbears aboard."
Regarding Respar's suggestion that they need a cover story, Kiven says "by all means." He adds "make it something good for a noble lord, would you?" He smirks.
Eya can be seen struggling with hauling what appears to be a hefty looking bag filled with items. She eventually gets the bag over onto the boat and sets it down, breathing a heavy sigh of relief. She sits down and wipes the sweat from her brow as she mumbles, "Oh, I'm really going to miss you, Grumblejack."
Soon enough, everything is ready for you to set sail. You have supplies for the brief voyage, and the scouts have reported that no ships are in position to spot you departing the river by the camp.
Having decided not to sail with bugbears for the moment, the group shoves off, and makes south as swiftly as the winds allow. The day goes quietly enough. You do spot a few other ships along the way, but not until you've already passed far enough south to not be suspicious. You make your landing several miles west of Aldencross, in a shallow cove.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Respar shrugs as the majority of the group decides to forgo bringing a secondary crew to return the ship to Sakkarot's camp. "We will just have to hope we can find a place or a way to keep it hidden." He pauses, obviously thinking. He mutters to himself as he contemplates the situation. "If we manage to settle ourselves, maybe as thinking of becoming merchants, we could eventually bring the boat to the docks and pay to have it berthed there..."
Later he looks at Kiven's simpering smirk. "If you have such a vested interest in the cover story, why don't you offer something? And by the way, if posing as a simple cleaner were the best way to gain entry to the keep, I'd gladly do so. For the sake of the mission. You should consider it."
Once they make landfall he helps the group unload their necessary supplies so they can head inland, presumably towards a road where they should eventually find their wagon.
After the boat gets moving and seems to be well on its way, Eya pulls Kiven aside for a "wizard" study session. There are many books and papers out and about in the central area of the deck. As the session gets underway, she asks him, "Okay, so what did you come up with? I just finished these two spells here." She points to two pages in her book, "I'm particularly proud of this one here. It creates a pit that could be useful in dividing and conquering our enemies. However, you might be particularly interested in this one here. It's more of a defensive spell that allows you to make illusory copies of yourself and makes you much harder to hit. Also, your brother's book contained a spell that can turn someone invisible. It should be our top priority to learn I think, given the nature of our next mission."
---
During the group discussion, Eya says, "We could be merchants or just simply adventurers looking for a simple place to enjoy some downtime. The merchant idea is a good one if we want to keep our new boat here. What do you all think? Should we just sink the boat or try and keep it? I had thought about trying to keep it, but I'm not sure how feasible it would be to actually do anything with it or to get it out of this lake for that matter. It might be easier to sink it sadly."
Once they arrive, Eya says to Kili, "We are going to have to hide you when we near the wagon so be ready with the invisibility. You can hide in the back of the wagon in a sack. Don't worry, it has small holes in it for breathing. For now though, can you fly up a bit to get an aerial view and tell me if you see a wagon waiting by the road?"
I'm taking 10 on Eya to learn both Invisibility and Glitterdust (from Kiven). Cinder, the following level two spells are available from Eya to learn:
You will have to check which ones are available for Magus to learn. Create Pit is not on the Magus list unfortunately, but it's so powerful and Eya is great with Conjuration spells.
Respar says, "Well, if we pose as adventurers we will draw a certain kind of attention. And downtime in what is essentially the middle of nowhere would be suspicious. I think if we go that route we should be willing to 'admit' we are planning on adventuring north of the wall, and possibly are even the scouts for a larger group that will join us in a month or so." He looks over the charts and maps they had. "Aldencross is a town that was built to support the keep. The food grown, hunted and fished, the items crafted by artisans, are almost exclusively sold to the keep. There is a symbiosis. Of course people sell to one another for basic needs and such, but the town supports the keep. It's people are dependent on the troops for their lives, and livelihood. It may be outlawed in Talingarde, but trust me, there are men and women there who entertain the troops privately." He pauses. "If we decide we are merchants, we not only need to decide what we will be selling, or buying, and perhaps we are setting up for a large group that anticipates a sudden influx of more people. Hinting that maybe the Powers That Be are planning on expanding the keep, or even sending a force to head north of the wall, as another attempt to carve out space from the North. Hence the opportunity to open a new shop or store." He looks to the others for their thoughts.
Kili flies straight up for a bit, and returns shortly afterwards. "Yeah, there's a wagon sitting by the road a bit east of here. Whoever it is has a fire going."
Replying to Respar's idea, Eya says, "I like the idea. I've always wanted to open up an alchemical shop or a magic shop of some kind. We could call it the Black Cat's Lucky Oddities or some such. It needs to have black cat in the name I think. Oh, but perhaps that would be too obvious? We could attempt a bakery that serves fresh baked goods in the mornings only until we run out of supply. This gives us a front with minimal work hours that make sense."
Eya ponders several ideas.
When Kili returns, she says, "Good job, Kili. You heard him guys, our destination is a bit east. We just need to aim for the smoke in the distance there."
She begins walking that way with the party when they are ready to move.
Kiven grins at Respar, appreciating a bit of fight in him. "I could, but then what would we need you for?" He smiles and leans back against the side of the ship, his hands behind his head.
Later Kiven does admit "I like the idea of a business venture." "It is unfortunate that we have little in the way of goods to sell or even skills in demand at this meager town. I've made my share of potions over the years, so could help with your 'Black Cat', but I don't know how many customers we would have. Perhaps one of us should go into town and see which services are prevalent and which may be lacking? Also, should we just try to sell the ship and ask what they'll do with it? If we need it again to go ferry Respar's friends we'll just 'borrow' it."
Kiven is pleased to continue to re-establish the magic he lost when his original spellbook was taken from him along with every other personal possession he had ever valued. He does seem to lose his train of thought when Eya hands him back his brother's spellbook, however, staring at it blankly for a while and then flipping through the pages lazily. Eventually he hands her his current spell book, open to pages with freshly inscribed Bladed Dash and Glitterdust spells. Still a bit lost in thought he says "took me a while to remember them from my previous life and get them just right." Copying her Flaming Sphere spell he remarks "do you happen to enjoy fire, my dear devil?"
Taking 10 to copy Mirror Image, Flaming Sphere and Invisibility as Eya suggested. 120g I believe.
Respar's eyes go wide and a smile appears as he says, "You know, that ought to work. We are coming to open an alchemy shop. The need for various plants and ingredients would give us cover to occasionally be away from town for an overnight or two. If we can create a decent potion or two as we are starting out, maybe the folks in the keep will invite us in to talk business. We can start establishing relationships with suppliers of equipment and ingredients, and then the customers in the keep. Yes, I like this idea. If everyone is agreed, of course. If so, what names does everyone wish to use for this phase of the mission?"
Jesla listens with indifference to their planning. " It sounds reasonable to me i suppose. I dont have much experience starting up businesses in strange cities. I will defer to the experts here. As to the name.....maybe Annaryth. I will do my best to appear as a mousy clerk i think it is called. " Her shoulders shake from laughter.
She uses her anklet and changes her look to that of a young brunette just over 5' tall. Her slim form is clad in a drab brown gown. She looks ahead carefully for any sign of danger and the wagon they seek.
Respar nods at Eya's words. "That all sounds good to me. Since we wish to draw as little attention as possible, at least for now, I'd recommend that you keep your disguise form, but lose the Mitran adornment.
