Annaryth hides a little clumsily, but fortunately the women aren't paying attention in her direction. In listening in, it sounds like they're waiting on their respective husbands, who are due to return from patrol today.
Respar slips into the kitchen invisibly at night, then down the stairs into the basement. There's a rigged pulley to help with heavy items like ale casks. Most of the walls are hidden from view at first, with casks and crates stacked up all over the place, but getting behind them is not too difficult. It takes a good bit of searching, but he finds a hidden catch.
The secret door slides open easily and quietly, apparently having been made with excellent craftsmanship. There is dust all over the place within, but also footprints. Someone's been in here inside of the past month or so. The passage is simple and direct to follow, and ends in a simple stone door much like the one at the other end. Creeping it open, Respar finds himself in a room with no current lighting. Poking around, it appears to be a vault of some sort, filled with emergency food supplies. Mostly rock hard cakes of barely edible material, intended for last for decades without going bad. It looks like there's enough here for the fort to withstand several years worth of a siege. Based on the condition of the crates, it looks like the fort has never needed these supplies.
But time is now running short, if Respar intends to have invisibility still active when exiting the kitchens, he needs to get moving.
Respar shuts the door back as he withdraws and hurries back to the Inn, then up to his room. The next morning he gathers the others into his room and once more whispers to them. "I found the passage in the basement. It took awhile, so I did not explore too far once I reached the keep, or whatever building it is. But I am confident it is the keep. We will need to use it sparingly. There are tracks that show it has been used sometime within the last month or so. And until we have a better idea of the interior, I'd rather not explore too far just yet." He turns to Eya. "I was wondering something, sister. I know you are focused on making items, but I think having a few potions for folks to sample during the pig roast to help establish our bona fides might be a good idea. Is that possible?"
Annaryth grins as she hears why the women are waiting. She decides to hold her position and continue to wait for their husbands. This might be some useful information she thinks.
Martha is excited about the cloak and ponders briefly some ways to potentially steal it, but decides against such temptations for now. The mission remains her top priority after all. She can always try to take it later somehow after coming up with a solid plan.
She looks around and notices the map. "Jackpot!" she thinks to herself. She immediately begins trying to copy the map as best as she can.
---
The next morning at the team meeting, Eya smiles as Respar shares his good news, "Excellent work, I also learned some things last night. The lead dwarf engineer, Barnabus, peach that he is, has in his room a full map of the keep. I tried to copy it with what limited time I had, but might need to sneak back in and get more details. He also has a magical cloak that would be nice to have, but he wears it everyday before he goes to work at the keep. We may be able to snatch it and frame someone else, perhaps start some in-fighting in the process. If anyone has any ideas on that, I am all ears."
Regarding making potions, Eya says, "I can make two or three remedies for people to try, but my main limitation right now is gold as you all know. I can make one per day. For three separate concoctions, the total would be 20 gold to make all three of them."
Respar immediately hands over another 20 gold to Eya. "Here you go. More than a fair trade for your map. If we need more details on it, tomorrow go back and copy more of it, if you'd be so kind." He ponders what Eya has so far. "Depending on where the passage comes into the keep, it might make it easy enough for your idea of putting stuff into their food to weaken as many of the soldiers as possible. And as we learn more about the keep and its inhabitants, we can try more targeted infiltrations. Look for orders, troop movements, and so on."
Jesla waits in the bushes for a time. Eventually the sound of horses comes to her. A group of ten riders come trotting up the road from the east. The man at the fore is wearing the uniform of a captain of the Tallirean guard. Two of the men behind him split off and head towards where the women are waiting. Their captain laughs and waves them off.
The group keeps moving up the road towards the keep, but then a few of them spot Jesla where she hides. The patrol comes to a halt, and someone calls out to her, "Is there a problem miss?"
Kiven is intrigued as Eya and Respar report in, raising his eyebrow especially in regard to the discovery of the passageway, a map of the keep, and the most of all the magic cloak. Kiven smirks at Respar and asks "and how many footprints did you leave for the tunnel's regular patron to discover?"
"Wulfric will assist you in making more potions and the like, most esteemed 'Martha'. I could contribute more funds to the cause as well, just tell me what you need. Would you like the funds for the other item now, while we're on the subject? How goes your progress?"
"I'm all for moving forward with causing some trouble, but perhaps we should wait for 'Ye Merrie Men' to be in town so we are no longer the most recent arrivals and thus suspect for any troubles that arise?"
She blushes in embarrassment when she realizes her hiding spot has been discovered. Annaryth know that combat is out of the question now. . She steps down towards the road. " Im sorry to interrupt your travels. I came out here walking alone and was beset by some.....lady problems. " She smiles at them hoping they let it go at that.
Martha chimes in on the discussion regarding the tunnel, "Wulfric brings up a good point. Who is using the tunnel? We should keep an eye out for them and decide how to proceed after we learn who they are. Perhaps we could begin infiltrating the keep at night soon and begin eliminating key targets after we identify their patterns. Remember that we can disguise ourselves at will as either guards, lowly servants, or even kitchen staff. We just need to learn what their clothing looks like and their general mannerisms. In order of importance, I would say the rookery needs to go first, probably followed by the mages. We should stalk these mages and find out where they sleep. My guess would be the tower, as that tends to be where mages gravitate towards. The poisoning of the stew needs to happen on the week of the attack, as the guards will only be sick for several days and not weeks. As such, that should be nearer to our last step."
Replying to Wulfric, "I will need three more days to finish my item. Then I can work on items for the rest of you. On that note, who wants an item first? Those should take less time as I learn more, I'm estimating two days per item going forward. Regarding potions, I can make one potion per day. If the feast is on Sunday, then that means I can make three potions. I'll start on the first one tomorrow. I will also need to give our payment to Master Valison for renting the vacant home and would appreciate some help in prepping it for business."
---
Over the next three days, Eya's focus is going to be on crafting pretty much during the entire day with a small break at lunch to run errands and chat with Master Scaramore. In the mornings it will be magic item creation and the afternoons will either be alchemy or learning a spell from Master Scaramore. In the evenings and at night, she can help the party with any missions. She will also take a brief amount of time give the agreed upon payment to Master Vallison for the store.
Day 1 Fireday: - Morning: Work on magic item (8 hours) - Afternoon: Eat lunch, pay Master Vallison with the deposit of gold + rent, then visit Master Scaramore and try to swap spells, Grease for Alarm is possible. Eya will say she is good at conjuration and that Grease is useful for many tasks. She wants Alarm so that she can protect her new store at night. - Evening: Four hours spent on crafting a Fortifying Brew using a take 10 (total 21) to meet the DC
Day 2 Starday: - Morning: Work on magic item (8 hours) - Afternoon: Four hours spent on crafting a Poison Ward Salve using a take 10 (total 21) to meet the DC - Evening: Night stealth mission with Kiven to investigate what is happening in the Alchemist's shop. New disguises + invisibility will be used here. Place Alarm just inside the secret tunnel before bed.
Day 3 Sunday: - Morning: Complete magic item using a take 10, Headband of Vast Intelligence with the Diplomacy skill baked in. For aesthetics, rather than a headband the item will look like the earrings in Eya's art to the left of this post but it will still take the same item slot mechanically as the headband (8 hours) - Afternoon: Four hours spent of crafting a Rager's Aid which will require a roll (Eya Craft Alchemy: 29) to make properly, DC 25 - Evening: Potential night stealth mission to the keep? Investigate the keep while invisible to learn what people wear around.
"Here is the gold for crown to prolong and enhance mental focus, as you have described."* Kiven hands over a large sum of gold to Eya for supplies.
"I will assist in potion and item making and opening up the shop. Perhaps I will come with you to trade some spells as well. I'll be eager to put our invisibility to good use and investigate the alchemist's shop as I definitely picked up some magic auras there."
*Kiven too will adjust the headband to something that fits him but still taking up the same item slot, a crown. :) There's actually a circlet or small crown in his character portrait so we'll call it that. 2,000g, right?
Sorry, didn't have time for a more thorough post. Gotta run!
Over the next few days, and during the pig roast, 'Dayven' does his best to make friends around the town and promote both the roast and the eventual opening of Rose's Elixirs and Solutions. He hopes to meet, or at least have pointed out, any high ranking folk from the keep. And he does his best to suss out anything that might be of use. Perhaps someone might be desperate for coin and susceptible to bribery for information. Maybe some of them have rivalry with one another that can be exploited. He does not press to hard at this point yet for information. He decides to wait until they have a better idea of who is using the passage before going deeper into the keep in disguise. So instead he posts himself in the basement of the inn while invisible for a few nights in hopes of learning who is using it.
In response to Wulfric's attempt at being smug he says, "Whoever uses it regularly probably will not be surprised to see footprints there, as they will assume they left the marks themselves. I was fortunate in that my first time there I spotted them."
The scout who had called out after Annaryth turns a bright red and stammers out, "I'm sorry for disturbing you miss. Have a good day." The patrol moves on, heading up the road towards the keep, minus their two companions.
One of the couples starts heading for Aldencross, the other pair have a seat and start chatting, "I worry for you when you're gone so long in the wilds." "Wilds? Hah! They're no more wild than the Pillars' son. The most excitement we've had in months on patrol was that pixie stuffing briars down the captain's pants."
They continue their conversation, though start to glance with increasing frequency in Annaryth's direction the longer she stays there.
---
An alarm is set by Eya, and Respar haunts the basement for a few nights. The alarm does not go off, and he does not catch sight of the mysterious user of the passage. But he does notice something odd. In poking around, he found a locked wine cabinet. Not unusual in and of itself, but when he pops the lock to take a look within, several of the wine bottles are covered in much thicker dust than the others, save for some recent finger smears. They're fine vintages too, a lot finer than Respar would expect to find here.
---
Eya has little trouble obtaining the spells she needed. Master Scaramore is quick to open his books for her use in that regard and help her through his notation. She gets the distinct sense that he's glad to be teaching magic, even if only in a limited fashion.
Later, she and Kiven head to the Alchemist's shop at night. The front door is easily bypassed then opened thanks to Eya's teleportation. It is dark and quiet within. The door to what is presumably where the Alchemist has his workspace and stores the bulk of his materials and product proves more of a challenge. It is heavily locked and well sealed around all edges, providing no view within. Worse still, Kiven spots an Alarm spell on the threshhold.
Annaryth realizes that she wont get more information now. She has another idea. She begins walking after the patrol towards the keep. Maybe she can find a soldier to share a few drinks with who will reveal important information.
Kiven transforms his visage into that of the mercenary elf he had disguised himself as on their voyage on the ship, someone no one else in this town has ever seen. This time however he is dressed in all black including cloth over his head and mouth. He is careful about where he steps and focuses on detecting any magic, signaling Eya with his hands and mouthing "A-L-A-R-M", something he knows won't surprise Eya in the least.
Eya is invisible and also wearing a black disguise as a relatively androgynous-looking humanoid figure. She uses message to telepathically say, "No good on this door. No cracks or anything either. We need the rogue for this. Let's get out of here for now and come back later."
Once they are back, she explains the situation to Respar. "That alchemist is hiding something back there, perhaps even something incriminating. We might be able to use that to our advantage. However, the back room has a magical alarm and is shut tight. We need your expertise to get in."
I'm hoping we just try again the night after on this one. Note that Eya is also setting an Alarm every night to try and catch whoever is using the tunnel.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Respar nods. "Tomorrow night I will give it a go." The next evening he accompanies Kiven and Eya, also looking like a faceless mercenary. "If this doesn't work, we need to get out fast."
Respar succeeds in disabling the alarm easily enough, and Kiven watches the magic dissipate into chaotic patterns that produce nothing. The lock proves more stubborn however.
Respar frowns, and even without dark vision can practically see Kiven smirk or sneer, or both. He focuses and takes his time, letting his picks guide his fingers, finding pressure points. Then he is rewarded with a soft click from the lock. He exhales, not having realized he was holding his breath. He opens the door and gestures for the men to enter.
There is a storeroom beyond the door. Shelves of completed alchemy items, and various storage containers of reagents. The alchemist is fairly well stocked, though Eya doesn't spot anything especially rare in here. There are also stairs heading down below.
The group heads down, and finds another door. This one unlocked save for a simple slide latch, and with no alarms or traps. It is however sealed around the edges with some manner of felt for some reason.
The room beyond is filled with surgical tools and strange implements. An arm lies on the table, its skin flayed open. You can see shards of some strange blue-grey substance that have been fitted into various parts of the muscle fibers.
The arm's owner watches you from across the room, behind the bars of a cage. The man there is the picture of a proud knight in armor, with the golden sunburst of Mitra emblazoned in actual gold on his breastplate. Of course him obviously being dead somewhat spoils the picture. His left eye is a ruinous hole. It looks to Respar like he took a crossbow bolt there from close range.
