William and Chives finally wake up. The light has faded and everything is darker than you remember with the tavern being bathed in the light of the setting sun. The cellar door is wide open and you don't see any rats around you. You do hear distant squeaking but it doesn't seem to be coming from the cellar.
Chives slowly stands up, feeling the wooden boards creak below her. With absolute certainty, she answers William's last question. "Nope!" She then goes to open the tavern door and look outside.

Chives walks to the front and finds the inn eerily quiet. The only sound is her steps on the wooden floor, her own breathing and the distant sounds of squeaking and chewing. She looks out and sees the town quiet. It is twilight and the sky is cloudy. All the doors and windows of nearby houses are shut. The road is devoid of any sign of humanoids save for the random bone lying in the dirt, all flesh picked clean. She sees rats. Lots and Lots of rats. Some of the houses seem to have blood splats on their windows and doors riddled with holes. Rats wander the street; the occasional rat carries bits of flesh in its mouth. Beside her is a barrel. The barrel seems to have been nailed shut from the inside using arrows.

Chives successfully picks up the barrel. It is surprisingly heavy. Like more than 50 pounds.
Earlier that day, when Chives and William went down while fighting the rats at the inn, Joben ran and warned the other villagers about the rat problem. Many of them ran inside and fortified their house. Some however, weren't quick enough and fell to the rats. A rat with a small crown squeaked loudly and rats from every house poured out on to the street and stormed the village. Joben hid inside a barrel and sealed himself in it. The rats didn't find him but they did accidentally cause the barrel to roll away with Joben inside it. The barrel hit something hard and Joben lost consciousness. When he woke up again, he feels the barrel shake, as if it's being moved.
William sees Chives with the barrel. “Whatcha got there, Chives?” Then he looks passed her out to the street at the grisly scene and his demeanor changes to distress. “Orianna... oh no....” he grabs his axe And heads for the door. “I have to find my daughter.”

Chives calls out to William. "Don't you at least want to see what in this barrel? It could be... cheese. Nice, strong cheese." She inhales deeply. "Yes, it smells like rancid sweat. Must be cheese." She proceeds to try to pry open the barrel.

William stops shy of the door, looks back at Joben in the barrel, looks back at the door and considers things. He turns around and offers a hand to Joben. "Let me help you out."
So all three of you have 1 HP and no proper equipment right now. There's an army of rats laying siege to the village. They haven't noticed you inside the inn yet. What do you do?
William starts looking for a way to Caracas’s the doors and windows. “We’re going to need to save up some strength. Those little things were nasty, and were no good to anyone dead.”
(Does William have his axe? If not he’ll go to the basement door to look for it.)
Joben knocks an arrow on to the bow and gets ready to shoot.
William's Turn.
William picks himself up off the floor and flings open the door, being sure to stay out of Joben’s sight line.
(Is there room for me to get into melee range of the rats? If so...)
william swings in big sweeping arcs with his axes, first with his right, then with his left: Attack: 22 Damage: 7; Attack: 14 Damage: 3
William opens the door and Joben immediately fires an arrow into rat3 and kills it.
@William Nope no space for rat melee.

"Wha..... what happened," William asks as he slowly regains conscienceless? He looks over at Chives, "Am I dead? Are we dead?"

You pry open the barrel and find a Joben inside.

(Everyone has all their equipment. The rats are coordinated but not intelligent so they didn't really think about taking your equipment away)
Also, I don't understand what William is doing to the doors and windows... can you please clarify.
