“Ah, and perhaps there is a swarm down there, Joben, they’re still rats, and I would rather take my chances with a couple rodents then risk the danger of other, unknown, and possibly more sinister threats we could face while while wandering around outside the town hoping to find adventurers. And another thing, who knows how mich time it could take to find to come across adventurers willing to accept our task, and the price they will ask? Orinyn, you logic is sound, but altogether, your idea is unrealistic. A few traps would not be enough to exterminate all the rats. They would eventually wise up to it and ignore the bait. More time wasted. Why does it seem so impossible to you two and Johnnie that seven relatively able-bodied people could deal with a nest of small animals? William is right, we are perfectly capable of performing this business ourselves.
Putting on his best aged and crippled old man voice, Johnnie leans in towards Karl, "You ain't seen the size some rats can get, have ye? I've seen some the size of 8 month old pup and was able to take down said pups mum."
After waiting a second, he continues, "but in all honesty, I'm lazy and would rather not get some kind of disease from getting bit. By all means, if that's how you want to handle rats, though, lead the way. You can hit them with my tankard."
Ori rubs his leg, having forgotten his walking stick in his excitement leaving home. He wasn't entirely able-bodied.
"Joben's right that you're underestimating rat bites. Even if you don't catch something horrible, it'd still get infected and be a drain on the Healer's supplies. But I'm not fond of wandering around nearby towns looking for help unless we need it..."
Ori flicks his tail absentmindedly, then tucks it back around his leg with a glance around. "Do we know how many rats there are? I still think baiting them and disposing of them - safely - would be the best option."
William sighs, suddenly bored with the whole ordeal. He picks up his axe, unscheeths his spare, and makes for the door to the cellar.
“The least we can do is go down there and see what we can see. If there’s only signs of a few rats, I think we can handle them. If there looks to be swarms, perhaps we are in over our heads.”
A whole adventuring party for some rats? There must be a ton down there. Either that or they're absolutely huge. Winn really wanted to try her hand at taking care of them herself, but she'd much prefer to not get bitten and infected.
As soon as her uncle tosses William the keys, Winn steps forward.
"I'll go with you," she says. "I know the cellar pretty well."
That's not...completely true. Despite living here for so long, she daydreams a lot and often forgets how her aunt and uncle like to set the cellar up. Sometimes she feels like they change things up down there just to mess with her, but then she remembers that they wouldn't do that. But this shouldn't be too hard. They're not looking for food or drink or anything. They're looking for rats! It should be pretty easy to find something scurrying on the ground.
Seeing that a group is forming to go into the cellar, Johnnie switches sides. "Oh fine, I'll go too. You owe me 2 nights of open bar for this! or 2 casks in my grave if I die!"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ori sighs, following at the back of the group. He's put his bowl down, and borrowed a stick that can serve as a walking aid for the moment. He didn't like the idea much, but the rats would probably be scared of the stomping and hide, right?
He peers around the cellar as it comes into view. (( Perception: 6 ))
"I see a lantern," Winn says, squeezing between everyone in order to get to it. The minute she reaches the cellar floor, she immediately stands on her tiptoes. She doesn't see any rats yet, but she hears them and it's disgusting. She instinctively keeps her arms up as well as she gingerly reaches for the lantern.
As winn approaches the ground she notices 4 rats trying to sneak up on her. By trying to sneak up, I mean they are making the biggest racket ever while slowly approaching her at the pace of 5ft per turn.
When she grabs the lantern and lights it, the rats squeak something which you assume means, "Shit, our cover is blown. How did she know we were here?" and flee into the shadows.
Everyone can now see the rats. There are 4 of them here but there might be more still hiding.
"Oh, good, the rats are aggressive," mutters Ori, leaning on his borrowed stick. "Perhaps now is a good time to actually make a plan? Traps are still my suggestion. They seem to be scared of the light more than people." Ori flicks his tail again, a clear sign of agitation and nerves. "Or we could just set the whole place on fire," he murmurs to himself.
Johnnie stares sullenly at the empty tankard, "Well, let's get on with it and find us some suicidal adventurers..."

The innkeeper informs William, if you're going to check on things, be my guest. Here's the keys."
He tosses you the keys to the cellar.

So, you guys open the cellar and go down to investigate. Those with darkvision, give me Perception checks.

William turns the key in the lock and creeks open the door. He waits to see what the others see.
Joben doesn't see anything outside the cellar.
Winn follows them downstairs, glancing around as she does so.

Winn sees a lantern at the bottom of the stairs but no rats yet. She can hear them though.

You don't see anymore rats hiding. You see the fleeing rats disappear deeper into the cellar. They went North.
Johnnie, seeing the rats flee, will now start looking for a tapped keg that he can fill his tankard from; perception/investigation(?): 10
