Setup: Cora, Lafetha, and Yaalin stand on some rocks. Sim, Abigail, and Diadochi are in a raging river. The depth of which shifts from 2 feet to over 8 feet without warning from swells to pits and sinkholes. (Water counts as difficult terrain) There are a series of rocks between the swells that people can attempt to jump and leap from which seems to be in blind spots of these ceiling hugging monsters (Acrobatics DC 12; disadvantage if in the water. Advantage if on land. If someone leaves one of the 3 spots on the land, DC 12 athletics check to swim over and pull yourself up; failure results in 1 level of exhaustion)
Initiative 21 Cora, signaling for the others, begins to jump across the rocks. Leaping from one spot to another. Attempting to get past and around them. "Come on, we know what we're up against up top. There's no reason to tire ourselves before necessary." 26
Initiative 20 The river.... (6....) swells. A large crash of water, debris, and rocks pummeling everyone in the water, battering them and trying to knock them prone in the ater. (1 bludgeoning damage. STR SAVE for half damage and to not be knocked prone)
Initiative 18 (Alul) STR Save: 14
Alul doesn't get knocked over, but the debris just simply bounces off of him. "You and your fancy tricks," he says. Hands moving, drawing runes in the air which suddenly become alive. "Give it your all, and never hold back." Both a flash of arcane energy from his finger tips, and a small ring on his pinky flashing. A singular point between the beasts on the ceiling beginning to glow before a white-hot flash of light erupts. Nearly the entire chamber engulfed in fire. The flames seeming to skip around the group, nearly reaching Cora.
Summary: Sim, Abigail, and Diadochi... (1 damage gets reduced to one due to rounding, so chose if you fell down or stayed up. It doesn't make a difference). The darkness returns to the room, as the three creatures on the ceiling burn away to ash and nothing.
(Lafetha and/or Yaalin, you can roll investigate to check out any of the wreckage on the bit of land you're on)
Alul, looking back to the others. "Always. Use your best."
Cora gives a look over to Diadochi, seemingly concerned about what kind of creature you all brought with you.
(Sim, Abigail, and Diadochi. You can roll investigate on the rocks that are more submerged to see if you find anything. But doing so will result in 6 bludgeoning damage from the waves and rocks and violent swells)
Yaalin looks around, searching through some of the rubble and boxes that weren't destroyed. You find a handful of broken bone bits, long since spoiled fruit and supplies, 7 copper coins, and a tin water-can that would not be out of place on the belt of a sailor.
Looking through the rubble, you stumble upon a person, long since dead and turned to bone. The figure seeming to be laying on top of a bag that's rotted away from the ever pounding river.
Attached you find a strange brooch, 30 gold coins in a pouch, a reddish potion still preserved (Healing: Greater), and a Orange-Ish potion still preserved (Fire Breathing)
(If Abigail does any investigation rolls, that action happens here.)
The group, once ready, presses on. Heading into...
Area 4
The chamber itself is cumbersome. Having to tread water to stay afloat. It seems this chamber to be a possible start of the river network; a rush of water coming up from below. A mix of freezing ice cold temperatures and incredibly hot mixing around you all as you bob along.
Hanging down from the ceiling, several strong ropes and buckets. A watering hole that would be a small challenge to climb up and out of. Looking around, there are a few footholds for climbing, or enough of a ledge for those that can transform into another creature to crawl up and out. (Athletics OR Acrobatics; DC 12 to climb up. If fail, your choice to fall and take 2d6 damage and try again. Or take 1 exhaustion and be out)
Abigail - you are fairly certain this is the pit you saw your first time you came to the Hn'ti village.
Down further, you notice a entirely underwater archway. A tunnel leading off and to the side. (Area 6) Away from the objective that is above you, however. (DC 13 athletics check. Yaalin, able to hold her breath for an hour, does not have to make one and could also provide advantage to ferrying through the tunnel / giving people a breath of air every so often. But it would be a single lane of people going through)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sim looks down at the underwater arch then up at the hole above. “Well no time like the present” then begins to climb up. Once up he will lower his rope down to help others along.
Diadochi looks at the way up, "I say, this looks like the best place to get topside considering I don't think we'll get any where closer. If the plan is still to go in stealthly we'll probably need Lafetha's helpful spell sooner rather than later." Diadochi looks at Alul, "We do this as a simple assassination, no one else dies unless absolutely necessary." Athletics 5 damage 7 second attempt takes level of exhaustion if fail, atheltics 14
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yaalin looks up the way out a sick feeling deepening in her stomach and without waiting for the others heads up the hole. Praying to the ancestors as she goes. ((guidance))
Sim and Lafetha climb up, out of the water and up to the stone floors above. Abigail comes up soon after, nearly losing some of the slick rope but manages to scramble on to the platform. A loud splash is heard below, Diadochi losing his grip and plummeting with a flop over thirty feet into the turbulent waters; getting tangled into some of the rope before climbing back up and out. A tired looking Yaalin also emerges, followed by Alul and Cora. Alul climbing the ropes while Cora, grabbing and pulling in circus like rope tricks.
The downstairs level is clearly a basement of a old fortress. Archways leading to other rooms, followed by more archways and yet more rooms. A bit in the distance, the stairs that lead up, as well as small batches of supplies scattered about the rooms. Through the gaps in the cobblestones above, you do get some light pouring through. The sounds of fire, along with talking. Footsteps echoing over you all for a moment.
Alul and Cora both suggest their plans of action. Alul, wanting to let them know you're here. Fight them in these rooms while moving throughout. Giving time for them to gather, but you have the escape route secured and it'll be bringing the fight to you. Cora, wanting to sneak up. Slip past them, knowing full well that if you're able to sneak to their Chief, this fight can turn your way easier. Besides, she isn't very afraid of the fall if you all run once again.
While they both discuss their plans...
Lafetha...
A voice speaks to you. It somewhat familiar but feels so very alien. "It isn't too late. Turn back. The price is too high."
...a small bug skitters away, after seeming to have stopped to look at you.
Yaalin...
You find yourself elsewhere. The sounds waves first washing over you. The calming pulse of the sea. Then, the horrifying cracking sound of eggs. Your eyes move around as the scene comes into focus. The stars above glowing. The waves washing over you. You look down and across, a figuring coming into view. Yourself. As you stand now. Something seeming to be moving behind you, with you, whispering to you. As you continue to move and walk, you step across the hatcheries. The eggs cracking and spilling under your own feet.
...you blink. Eyes flickering in color as the twilight fades and then returns in just a moment.
Cora finishes explaining her plan, as both Alul and her turn to look at the group. "So... what shall it be?
Diadochi dusts himself off, "the secondary goal here is to minimize casualties. If Lafetha is willing to use her spells to help us sneak then I think we should go the way of stealth. If she thinks she needs to keep it for the battle ahead then we should take them out now."
Yaalin staggers near the back of the group. Her mind spinning. She moves to a corner and sits breath labored from the climb.
She stares at her hands clad in the silver gauntlets of the people above her and gazes across the group as they discuss how to approach murder.
her eyes linger on Diadochi and in a whisper, almost to herself, "I cannot do this, This is not my purpose here" then louder. to the group, "I will stay here and guard the exit. Heal those who need it but I cannot, will not participate in the murder of innocents. Go if you still feel right about this and if you need to retreat flee past me and I will let you escape but this is as far forward as I go. I cannot become what this path leads to."
She begins to unbuckle the gauntlets and sets them on the floor next to her as well as a few of her packs with valuables and excess weight her movements showing her obvious exhaustion.
Lafetha decides that she will heed her warning. She mentions to the group that she has a bad feeling about what might happen if they proceed, weather they are stealth or not.
"I'm going to stay with Yaalin, and guard the exist as well. I don't think attacking is a very good idea."
She moves to the back of the group and stands beside Yaalin.
Cora's hands move into the pockets of the tattered robes the illusion projects over her. The squeaky tone whispering over to Diadochi. "If they both stay, we cannot succeed at this." She shoots him a look. "What say you? Do we do this without them?"
Alul, on the other hand, does not take it quite as... softly. "Cowards," he spits. "I expected better," he says - eyes looking over at Yaalin. The one person who seemed to agree with his frontal assault. He begins to head towards the exit, still on his mission. "What about you, Abigail?" He asks, pausing. "You, the one who freed me, must still be wanting this." Alul's breathing is a bit faster than normal.
He says something in Sylvan, under his breath. But Lafetha manages to catch it.
