Ah, that's where I'm going wrong then. You actually roll more dice for a crit rather than doubling the result you've already rolled. My only real frame of reference is Critical Role, and I'm sure they just double the result. That's maybe just a house ruling. Thanks! And sorry to derail the thread temporarily.
It's all good. This IS a training program :) I know a lot people do just double the dice and there's a solid rational for than. Mainly being that you can roll a crap critical damage by rolling twice, Like Wormsquirts 5 and then a 1. I'm trying to stick as close as possible to official rules since it is a training. I know I've been bending some rules with surprise trying to streamline rounds and handing out advantages for good roll playing but hey, I am the DM :) I can do that :) LOL
OOC: I think you miss understand what I meant, since the combat roller automatically rolls for crit on a attack roll of 20, if you double damage dice in the attack won't it then technically roll 4x's damage? I wasn't saying tot do it I was just thinking that is how it will work. But in this situation since they are asleep you should put double damage dice in your roll because any hit will be a crit, but the program won't realize you did that if you roll a 20 to attack and will roll 4x's damage.
If it were tabletop this wouldn't be an issue but I'm just saying on here it could be if you do it all as 1 roll and not just make 2 seperate damage rolls for a hit on a sleeping creature
ooc: Ahhh, got it! Yeah. It's a bit of a pain in the ass with the roller here. It may be best to not use the combat roller and just do 2 basic rolls, that way it doesn't 4x the damage if you do roll a 20 in the combat roller.
If anyone is wondering what that will look like, it'd be something along these lines without the spaces in the tags (and using your stats of course :)
OOC: The formula that I used for the damage was 1d6 for the sword, 1d6 for the sneak attack (that's where the advantage comes in and you can't double up on advantage), plus the modifier. Am I wrong on the sneak attack bonus, should I not have gotten it? I thought one of the party was within 5 feet. Can you even get a sneak attack on a prone target? I didn't know about advantage on a prone enemy though.
OOC; Ha, so it actually worked right just by accident. lol. Yeah you wouldn't have gotten the sneak on the unconscious gnoll but like I said it worked out correctly.
ooc: It's alright. Maybe I'm making the wrong call but I don't think they're stackable. You're already getting the auto crit and double damage because of unconscious condition, I don't think sneaking up on an unconscious creature is necessary and wouldn't give you an additional doubling. If there's some ruling somewhere that says otherwise I'm totally down. It is an interesting way of looking at it and could see that call being made.
OOC: So sneak is like giving a Rogue an easier way to do similar levels of damage to crit rolls as one of their class abilities? I guess that makes sense.
OOC: Right now I get to double my damage die roll for landing a sneak attack. Later in levels my sneak attack triples, then quadruples and so on...
I could see maybe if you rolled a crit on an automatic crit that in certain situations maybe the DM would allow you to double your double damage. Like maybe if it saved the party or an excellent role-play occasion or whatever.
OOC: OK, so are we all on the same page? I don't want to downplay Worms sneak and like I said I'm open to hearing other interpretations. That's one of the beautiful things of D&D, it's a group game. If anyone can make a good case for a ruling I'm totally open!
In terms of attack order Belainluin is still up I believe.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC:Sorry for the wait. I didn't remember it was my turn :D and was casually just following the posts.
Belialuin gather fire energy in his hand and casts Fire Bolt on the gnoll with a dagger in his ribcage. He smiles and while throwing the fireball says "Lets get some freshly baked gnoll here"
Seeing Belialuin put the finishing touches to the one with the sword in its belly (OOC: I'm assuming he kills it, but even if not I don't think Zarbof would take time to wait and see, so Zarbof is also assuming he kills it), and that the only remaining gnoll is unconscious, he drops his shield to the ground. He swings with his battleaxe at the remaining sleeping gnoll:
Attack 13 Damage 13
Then he pull out his dagger and stabs down again:
Bonus attack: 6 Damage 4 (I presume this second attack isn't a crit given that a battleaxe to the chest would wake it up! So I rolled without advantage on that too.)
(OOC: What I'm trying to do is get the dueller bonus (for only wielding a single weapon) on my first attack before drawing the dagger to get the second, but I'm fine if the ruling would be that if I'm taking the bonus attack with the dagger I don't get the duelling bonus on the first attack- in which case take 2 damage off the first attack)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: I wanted to tell everyone that Zarbof found the ruling and it does specifically say in the PHB that sneak attack and unconscious damage do stack! So Wormsquirt would have dealt 2d6+3 more damage. I'm going to take the liberty to roll that for him now just because it would effect Bel and Zarbofs attacks.
OK, so I'm going to get a bit creative in the order of things here to try and keep a timeline that makes it so no-one has to re-roll anything. Because it was totally my error for not getting the extra damage on Wormsquirts attack right up front. So here's how were going to play it for maximum damage effect between the 2 gnolls.
Wormsquirt DID hit a vital organ and that gnoll being already pretty beat up from fighting among themselves DIES in his sleep.
Belialuin wanting to give Zarbof a chance to get his best swing on the last unconscious gnoll holds his action until he see's Zarbofs axe fall.
Zarbof hits with his axe for 13dmg jerking the gnoll into wakefulness. The sudden movement of the gnoll causes the dagger to miss but it does the gnoll no good as Belialuin's fire bolt slams into it for 9 dmg KILLING it as it's hide smokes and sizzles.
That takes us out of initiative but you can still hear the sounds of rocks being moved by the crag.
OOC: Sorry that encounter got a bit messy at the end but still, dang guys! You dealt a lot of damage quickly.

Right on! I am too. I like Zarbof keeping tabs. and making me think deeper.
So has it been 24 hrs since Bel posted? Should I move things along or wait a bit for him?

"Sounds like these weren't the only gnolls, or these gnolls weren't the only things hanging about around here."
Can we tell which direction the sounds are coming from in relation to the battle map?
